Biographical Information[edit]
Alberto Guerrero has pitched as high as AAA and for the Panamanian national team.
Guerrero was signed by Miami Marlins scouts Luis Cordoba and Albert Gonzalez in July 2014. [1] He split 2015 between the DSL Marlins (0-2, 4.11 in 4 G) and GCL Marlins (1-2, 3.46 in 6 G). In '16, he improved to 4-3, 2.63 for the GCL Marlins. He pitched five innings (2 H, 1 UER, 0 ER, 5 BB, 2 K) for Panama in the 2016 U-23 Baseball World Cup, saving a win over Mexico and beating Japan. [2]
He spent 2017 with the GCL Marlins (2-2, 1.55 in 9 G) and Batavia Muckdogs (7.88 in 6 G). Had he qualified, he would have led the Gulf Coast League in ERA. He was 3-6 with a 3.49 ERA for Batavia in '18. He tied for second in the New York-Penn League in losses (one behind Alex Manasa) and tied for 8th in strikeouts (63).
With the 2019 Clinton Lumber Kings, he was 9-6 with a save and a 3.13 ERA. He tied for second in the Marlins chain in wins, two behind Hector Noesi. In the Midwest League, he tied for third in wins (behind José Chacin and Alan Strong) and was fourth in ERA (between Strong and Tanner Andrews). [3] The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Returning to action, he allowed one unearned run in 1 2/3 IP for the Federales de Chiriquí in the 2021 Caribbean Series. In 2021, he moved to primarily relief and appeared for the Beloit Snappers (1-2, 6.37 in 7 G), Pensacola Blue Wahoos (2-1, 2.28 in 18 G) and Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (1-1, 4.70 in 11 G), striking out 80 in 72 2/3 IP for the season.
The big right-hander signed as a free agent with the Washington Nationals in the off-season. [4] He struggled for the 2022 Harrisburg Senators at 2-3, 6.97 in 27 outings. He was with Panama for the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. In their opener, he closed out a shutout of Argentina. Relieving Matt Hardy, he retired Sebastián Fontana on a grounder, struck out Jacinto Cipriota and got Nicolás Alvarado to ground out to end it. Panama would win a spot in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, their first World Baseball Classic in 14 years. [5]
