Biographical Information[edit]
Matt Hardy has pitched as high as AAA and for the Panamanian national team. He is the grandson of fellow Panamanian team player Ossie Chavarría and nephew of David Chavarria. [1]
He had a 0.79 ERA as a high school senior. [2] He had a 1-1, 10.03 record as a college freshman and improved to a 3.86 mark as a sophomore. His junior year, he was 8-2 with a 4.55 ERA. [3] He had a 8-2, 4.39 record as a senior. The Milwaukee Brewers signed him as an undrafted free agent; the scout was Charlie Sullivan. [4]
Hardy split his first pro summer between the AZL Brewers (1-0, Sv, 1 UER in 7 IP) and Helena Brewers (1-0, Sv, 7.53 in 15 G). He was 5-1 with a 5.72 ERA in 36 outings for the '18 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. In 2019, he was 7-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 39 games for the Carolina Mudcats, fanning 87 in 78 2/3 IP. He was 4-0 with a save and a 1.57 ERA in a fine winter for the Atenienses de Manatí. He tied Giovanni Soto and Héctor Santiago for second in the Puerto Rican League in wins, one behind Eddy Reynoso. Only Fernando Cruz pitched in more games, one ahead of his 17.
The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned to action with the Brisbane Bandits but he went 0-3 with a 7.63 ERA in the 2020-2021 Australian Baseball League despite 22 K in 15 1/3 IP. He was 1-3 with six saves and a 3.83 ERA for the 2021 Biloxi Shuckers, whiffing 52 in 42 1/3 innings. He tied Daniel Duarte for 8th in Double-A South in saves. On May 15, he closed out a combined no-hitter 1-0 win over the Mississippi Braves, following Ethan Small, Zach Vennaro and Nathan Kirby on the hill. [5]
In '22, he pitched for Biloxi (1-0, 2 R in 8 IP) and the Nashville Sounds (3-1, 4.15 in 32 G), making it to AAA, impressive for someone who had been undrafted. Following his grandfather by 63 years, he suited up for Panama's national team. He was part of their dazzling performance in the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in which their pitchers turned in back-to-back shutouts to secure a spot in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, their first World Baseball Classic in 14 years. In his appearance, he relieved Randall Delgado in the 6th with a 11-0 lead over Argentina. He went 1-2-3 against Sebastián García, Agustín Tissera (K) and Pedro Figueras. [6]
