Biographical Information[edit]

Daniel Duarte reached the majors in 2022 after pitching in the Olympics.

Duarte was signed by Texas Rangers scout Manuel Velez in July 2013. [1] He was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA for the AZL Rangers in his pro debut in 2015 before injury ended his season. [2] He had a 6-3, 3.05 record for the DSL Rangers 1 in 2016, In his Mexican Pacific League debut, he allowed three runs in five innings for the Yaquis de Obregón.

He spent 2017 with the Tigres de Quintana Roo and did well in relief (6-1, 1.96 in 37 G). The Texas Rangers' Omaha Storm Chasers took him in the AAA portion of the 2017 Rule V Draft. [3] That winter, he was 2-0 with a 4.82 ERA for the Yaquis. He split the next summer between Quintana Roo (2-1, 4.26 in 21 G) and the Lexington Legends (1-0, 2.31 in 6 G) in the Kansas City Royals chain. In the winter, he was traded with a draft pick to the Cañeros de Los Mochis for Juan Carlos Gamboa. [4] He was 5-1 with a 2.10 ERA in 32 games for his new team, though he walked 21 in 34 1/3 IP. He tied for 6th in the Mexican Pacific League in wins and tied for 9th in games pitched.

Duarte split 2019 between Lexington (1-0, 7 R in 4 IP), the AZL Royals (3 R, 1 ER in 5 1/3 IP) and the Wilmington Blue Rocks (1-0, 4.50 in 10 G). He was 1-2 with a 2.96 ERA that winter and allowed two hits to three batters in the 2020 Caribbean Series after the Tomateros de Culiacán picked him up for the Series. The Cincinnati Reds signed him [5] but the 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned to Los Mochis in the winter, going 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA.

He began 2021 lights-out with the Acereros de Monclova (1-0, 0.64, 7 H, 4 BB, 17 K in 14 IP), prompting Cincinnati to sign him again. He was not with their system long before he was named to the Mexican squad for the 2020 Olympics. [6] He made two fine appearances. He closed out a 1-0 loss to Bronze Medal winner Dominican Republic, relieving Fernando Salas and going 1-2-3 against Melky Cabrera, Julio Rodríguez and Juan Francisco. His other outing, he succeeded Sasagi Sánchez in the 5th with a 6-4 deficit versus Israel. He got Ryan Lavarnway on a fly then fanned Blake Gailen and Nick Rickles. In the 6th, he struck out Ty Kelly, gave up a Mitch Glasser double, got Zack Penprase looking and retired Scotty Burcham on a grounder. Salas replaced him in the 7th. [7] He split the rest of the summer between the ACL Reds (2 R in 2 IP), Dayton Dragons (0-1, Sv, 3.38 in 4 G), Chattanooga Lookouts (0-1, 6 Sv, 5.86 in 11 G) and Louisville Bats (2-0, Sv, 0 R in 4 IP).

That winter, he was 1-0 with a save and a 1.04 ERA in 17 games for Los Mochis, with a .75 WHIP. He then pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings for the Charros de Jalisco in the 2022 Caribbean Series. He made the 2022 Reds out of spring training. In his debut, he replaced Jeff Hoffman in the 6th with a 7-3 deficit against Atlanta. He struck out Ozzie Albies, yielded a Matt Olson double, got Austin Riley on a long fly then whiffed Marcell Ozuna. Fellow rookie Alexis Díaz took over in the 7th.
