Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ethan Small was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1st round of the 2019 amateur draft, with the 28th overall pick, out of Mississippi State University. He had a great junior year for the Bulldogs going 10-2, 1.93 in 18 starts and leading the team to an appearance in the 2019 College World Series, after already playing on the tournament in 2018. He finished his college career with 318 strikeouts, third highest in school history after Eric DuBose (428) and Jeff Brantley (364).
After signing with the Brewers, he made 7 starts in the minor leagues in 2019, with the AZL Brewers Gold and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, logging 21 innings with an ERA of 0.86. He then was forced to sit out the 2020 season as there was no minor league baseball, but spent his time at the Brewers' alternate training site with other top prospects in the organization and members of the 40-man roster. He was back in action in 2021, first with the Biloxi Shuckers of the Double-A South and later with the Nashville Sounds of the Triple-A East, also making one rehabilitation start back in the Arizona League after injuring his middle finger and missing some time as a result. He went a combined 4-2 with a 1.98 ERA in 18 starts, totalling 77 1/3 innings and striking out 92. He also appeared in the 2021 Futures Game with the National League squad.
He made his major league debut with the Brewers as the starting pitcher in the first game of a Memorial Day doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on May 30, 2022. His opponent on the mound in that game was Matt Swarmer, who was also making his debut, as was Cubs RF Nelson Velázquez. His outing wasn't great, as he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in 2 2/3 innings before being replaced by Trevor Kelley. However, he escaped with a no-decision as the Brewers rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win the game, 7-6 on their way to sweeping the twinbill.
