Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Matt Swarmer was drafted in the 19th round of the 2016 amateur draft, by the Chicago Cubs out of Kutztown University of Pennsylvania - a Division II school that is not exactly a baseball power. However, he found success in the minors, including leading the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts with the Iowa Cubs in 2019, with 137. However, he also posted a 5.65 ERA that season, so the road to the Show was not really straightforward.

He made his major league debut on May 30, 2022 starting against the Milwaukee Brewers in the first game of a Memorial Day doubleheader. He was facing another pitcher making his big league debut, Ethan Small, who was a much more heralded prospect, having been a first-round pick in the 2019 amateur draft. Matt gave up 4 runs in 6 innings, but only one was earned, and he struck out 6 batters while walking just 1, exiting with a no-decision. He was having a good season at Iowa, posting an ERA of 2.08 in 39 innings before getting the call. After a good performance in his second start, he ran into a buzz-saw on June 11th, facing the New York Yankees at New Yankee Stadium. The first batter of the game, major league home run leader Aaron Judge went deep off him, the first of six homers he allowed in five innings, tying a franchise record dating back to Tom Lee in 1884, as well as the modern major league record. All six shots were solo ones, as Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres, Jose Trevino, Anthony Rizzo and Judge a second time all went deep in an 8-0 Yankees win. Incidentally, Stanton's homer was the hardest-hit ball recorded by Statcast that season. He was the second pitcher in major league history to give up six solo shots in one game, after Sloppy Thurston in 1932.
