Biographical Information[edit]
In addition to playing 21 games for the Baltimore Monumentals in the Union Association in 1884, Tom Lee also worked three of the circuit's games as an umpire. He also played 6 games for the Chicago White Stockings of the National League that season. On June 28th, he became the first pitcher in franchise history to give up six homers in one game; in his defense, that was the year when the team considered that balls hit over the short fence at Lake Front Park, a little under 200 feet from home plate, counted as homers and not as ground rule doubles and went on to set various home run records as a result. His "feat" was not matched until June 11, 2022, when rookie Matt Swarmer gave up six long balls to the New York Yankees. Lee allowed 12 long balls in just 45 1/3 innings in his 5 mound appearances for the White Stockings, and only 1 in 122 innings for Baltimore. A true jack-of-all-trades, he also saw action as outfielder, third baseman and shortstop that season.
