Season Highlights

Not much was expected of the 2019 Miami Marlins given that they were still in the middle of a reconstruction and playing in a division where all four other teams had legitimate hopes to win the division title. Still, even by these low standards, they got off to a very poor start, losing 15 of their first 20 games. Their team batting average was .215 and they had scored a total of 51 runs while allowing 99. The first to pay the price for this awful start was hitting coach Mike Pagliarulo, who was fired on April 19th. He was replaced by assistant hitting coach Jeff Livesey and Eric Duncan was named assistant hitting coach.

In spite of the steady losing, the Marlins began to show some return from the fire sale that followed the sale of the team after the 2017 season. Both Zac Gallen and Sandy Alcantara, the team's sole All-Star were members of the starting rotation after having been obtained form the St. Louis Cardinals in the trade for Marcell Ozuna, and they were joined in June by Jordan Yamamoto, acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in the trade for Christian Yelich. Two other players in that deal, OF Monte Harrison and IF Isan Diaz, were selected to play in the 2019 Futures Game.
