The 2019 Colorado Rockies were coming off two consecutive appearances in the postseason, a first in franchise history, but were still looking for that elusive first division title, something that had slipped away from them by the smallest of margins in 2018. However, after going 2-2 in their first four games played in March, April was a bit of a slug as they were just 11-15. Thus, on April 30th, they were in 4th place and already 6 games out of first. Their hitting had been very bad during the month, but they managed to turn things around in May, when they hit over .300 as a team and a looked a lot more like the Rockies of old. As a point of comparison, they had not managed to score in double figures even once in April, but did so in each of their first two games in May, and 7 times in all during the month, when they went 16-10. On May 31st, they were back over .500, at 29-27, and had managed to climb up to third in the NL West, although their deficit on the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers was now 9 games, forcing to once again concentrate their minds on earning a wild card slot. By sweeping the listless Toronto Blue Jays at home on May 31-June 2, the Rockies had an 8-game winning streak and completed their homestand with a 10-1 record. Leading the offense were 3B Nolan Arenado and LF Raimel Tapia, filling in for an injured Charlie Blackmon, who hat hitting streaks of 13 and 12 games respectively, and SS Trevor Story who was having an outstanding all-around season.

On June 13-16, the Rockies combined with the San Diego Padres to set a new major league record by scoring a total of 92 runs in a four-game series, beating the previous record of 88 set in 1929. The series started innocently with a 9-6 win by Colorado, followed by a 16-12 Padres win in 12 innings, that featured San Diego coming back from 6 runs down in the 9th; in the third game, Colorado won, 14-8, but they lost the final game, 14-13, when closer Wade Davis gave up 4 runs in the 9th, the last on a bases-loaded walk. Blackmon had three consecutive four-hit games in the first three contests and accumulated 15 hits, 4 homers, 9 runs and 10 RBIs in the four games.
