History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 2016 Colorado Rockies grabbed headlines early in the season thanks to an unlikely hero, SS Trevor Story. Although a top-rated prospect, he was not really on anyone's radar screen until the Rockies presumptive starter at short, veteran Jose Reyes was put on paid leave by Major League Baseball just before spring training because of an ongoing investigation into a domestic violence incident. Story hit a pair of homers in his major league debut, which came on opening day, April 4th, in a 10-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He then went deep in each of the next three games, including two more in his fourth game on April 8th, Colorado's home opener. No other player had ever homered in his first three career games before him. On April 13th, he showed that he could get other types of hits as well, as he hit two triples in a 10-6 win over the San Francisco Giants; Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez also triples as the Rockies set a team record with four three-base hits in the game. That same night, Nolan Arenado hit a pair of homers while driving in a career-best 7 runs as the offense was firing on ally cylinders in the early going.

On May 5th, they set a team record with a 13-run 5th inning in a 17-7 defeat of the San Francisco Giants. Story started things off with a homer off Matt Cain, and everyone in the line-up contributed, including P Chris Rusin who drove in a pair of runs with a single. They then tied a team record on May 31st when they hit seven homers in a 17-4 drubbing of the Cincinnati Reds. Blackmon led off the game with a homer off Jon Moscot, the second consecutive game in he had led off with a long ball, setting yet another record, and added his first career grand slam later in the contest. Arenado also hit a pair of homers. D.J. LeMahieu, Gonzalez and Gerardo Parra also went deep as the Rockies re-edited a performance dating back to April 5, 1997 in Montreal when the team was informally known as the "Blake Street Bombers".
