Season[edit]

On June 23, the 2010 Florida Marlins fired manager Fredi Gonzalez with the team in 4th place in the NL East with a record of 34-36. Also dismissed that day were bench coach Carlos Tosca and hitting coach Jim Presley. Their immediate replacements all came from within the organization: AAA New Orleans Zephyrs manager Edwin Rodriguez took over for Gonzalez, while minor league instructors Brandon Hyde and John Mallee took Tosca and Presley's place respectively. Owner Jeffrey Loria explained the firing by the Marlins poor on-field performance; with none of the teams in the division winning consistently, the Marlins had failed to take advantage of the opportunity to establish themselves as a pennant contender.

Two notable incidents had preceded the firing. On May 17, Gonzalez had been in a public fight with star SS Hanley Ramirez over the latter's loafing to retrieve a ball he had accidentally kicked into the outfield. Gonzalez had taken his player out of game and benched him for the next game while Ramirez expressed some disparaging remarks about his boss. On June 19, Gonzalez was caught sending the wrong batter to the plate in a game, after not clearly advising the home plate umpire about a number of substitutions he had made. Both incidents reflected poorly on Gonzalez and likely contributed to Loria's decision.
