Season Highlights[edit]
The 2023 Miami Marlins made history by coming out on the winning end of their first 12 one-run decisions. This was especially surprising (or maybe just a return to the norm) as they had lost 40 one-run games in 2022, the most by any team since the 1975 Houston Astros. Their 12th such win, by a 5-4 score over the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 10th, also set a record for most consecutive wins in games decided by one run by any major league team, surpassing the 1972 New York Mets. The Marlins were playing that many close games because of a very strong pitching staff combined with a poor offence - meaning they were playing more low-scoring games than any other team. Thanks to their outstanding record in these close games, they were 19-19 overall at that point.
On September 28th, a game between the Marlins and the New York Mets at Citi Field was suspended by rain in the top of the 9th inning after the Marlins had just taken a 2-1 lead. It was the last scheduled game between the two teams that season, and it was supposed to be resumed on October 2nd, the day after the end of the regular season, had it had postseason implications. Because the Marlins clinched a wild card berth without needing that win, the game was never completed. It took a few days for MLB to make a ruling regarding the game, but on October 4th, it was announced that the decision was to revert the score to the end of the last completed inning - the 8th - and to wipe out everything that happened after that, thus making it a 1-0 win for the Mets.
