History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 2023 Houston Astros came into the season as the defending World Series champions and the team to beat in the American League. They suffered a big injury just before the season started when 2B José Altuve, one of the team's leaders during its recent decade of success, had his thumb broken by a pitch from Daniel Bard in Venezuela's loss to Team USA in the quarter-finals of the 2023 World Baseball Classic. That put Altuve on the shelf for an estimated ten weeks, and forced Houston to go with Mauricio Dubon and David Hensley instead. Dubon started on Opening Day, March 30th, against the Chicago White Sox. Houston lost the game, 3-2, after blowing a 1-0 lead in the 8th inning, snapping a string of ten straight Opening Day wins dating back to 2013.
