Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Alberto Baldonado began his career in 2010 at 17 years old. He was signed by New York Mets scouts Rafael Perez, Ismael Cruz and Alex Zapata.
He began his career with a 1.41 ERA in 13 games (eight starts) for the DSL Mets in 2010, striking out 50 batters in 44 2/3 innings. Had he qualified, he would have tied for 9th in the Dominican Summer League in ERA. From 2011 to 2014, his ERA never fell below 3.71, though his K/9 IP ratio was occasionally solid -- in 2013, for example, he averaged 12.4 strikeouts per nine frames for the Kingsport Mets.
He was on the Panama national team roster for the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games. He started one game and was hard to hit (3 H, 7 K in 7 IP) but walked 6 and threw a wild pitch. He still left with a 5-2 lead over Nicaragua but Jean Corpas and Abdiel Velasquez blew it and Panama lost 7-5. He led Panama in walks but also tied Luis González for the most strikeouts. He also pitched for Panama in the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.
He began 2015 with the Savannah Sand Gnats.
His weight was listed as 160 lb. in his first seasons as a pro, but had risen to 250 lb. by the time he made his major league debut with the Washington Nationals in 2021.
