Team History[edit]
The Savannah Sand Gnats began playing in the South Atlantic League in 1996, when the club changed its name from the Savannah Cardinals. Led by Adrian Beltre and Eric Gagné, they captured the league title in their inaugural season. They have been affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, and Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals, and last were a New York Mets farm team. Over the years, other notable Sand Gnats have included Carlos Pena, Travis Hafner, Hank Blalock, Kevin Mench, Ryan Zimmerman and Laynce Nix. The Sand Gnats played their home games at Grayson Stadium in Savannah, Georgia. After the 2015 season, the team moved to Columbia, SC to become the Columbia Fireflies.
