Biographical Information[edit]

Paul Carey is a former major league first baseman and designated hitter who played in 1993 for the Baltimore Orioles. He also managed in the minor leagues from 1998 to 2001. His brother, Jim Carey, is a former NHL goalie and not to be confused with the SSSSSSSSSMOKIN' star of The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Prior to playing professionally, Carey attended Boston College High School in Dorchester, MA, and then Stanford, which he attended from 1987 to 1990. In 1987, he won the College World Series Most Outstanding Player Award while a freshman outfielder, becoming one of three players from Stanford to win the award (the others are Lee Plemel and John Hudgins). He was inducted into the Stanford Hall of Fame in 1990. He played for Team USA in the 1989 Intercontinental Cup.

Originally, Carey was drafted in the 27th round in 1986 by the Seattle Mariners out of high school, but did not sign. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round in 1989, but did not sign. After he was drafted by the independent Miami Miracle of the Florida State League in the fourth round in 1990, he did sign. In his first season, he hit .327 with four home runs and 20 RBI in 153 at-bats. On March 18, 1991, he was purchased by the Orioles from the Miracle. He played for the Hagerstown Suns, hitting .252 with 12 home runs and 65 RBI. In 1992, he split the season between the Frederick Keys, Hagerstown and the Rochester Red Wings. In 136 at bats with the Keys, he hit .301 with nine home runs and 26 RBI. In 163 at bats with the Suns, he hit .270 with four home runs and 18 RBI. In 87 at bats with the Red Wings, he hit .230 with a home run and seven RBI. Overall, Carey hit .272 with 14 home runs and 51 RBI.

Carey spent most of the 1993 season with the Red Wings, hitting .311 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI in 325 at bats. On May 25th, he made his big league debut against Bob Wickman and the rest of the New York Yankees. As the Oriole DH, he went 1 for 3 in a losing effort. He played 18 games, collecting 10 hits in 47 at-bats for a .213 batting average, and played his final game on October 2nd. Although his big league career was done, his professional career was not. In fact, he played professionally until 1995. In 1994, Carey played for Frederick and Rochester, hitting a combined .279 with 14 home runs and 40 RBI in 226 at-bats. In 1995, he hit .236 with nine home runs and 50 RBI for the Red Wings. Overall, Carey hit .275 with 65 home runs and 276 RBI in his six year minor league career.

Carey managed in the Texas Rangers' chain from 1998 to 2002 and was hitting coach of the Frisco RoughRiders in 2003-2004.
