Stanford University has sent 102 ballplayers to the major leagues through 2019. Prominent pitchers have included Mike Mussina, Jack McDowell, and Jim Lonborg, all with over 100 wins. Position players include Bob Boone, Steve Buechele, Ed Sprague, Mike Aldrete and Carlos Quentin. Active players through 2015 include Jed Lowrie, John Mayberry, Jr., Jason Castro, Sam Fuld, Jeremy Guthrie and Drew Storen.
Kenny Williams, general manager of the White Sox, also went there, and was a wide receiver on the football team, catching John Elway's passes.
Stanford's first player in the majors was Charlie Swindells, who appeared in 3 games with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1904. The famous football star Ernie Nevers appeared in the majors briefly from 1926-1928.
Harry Wolter was a long-time coach of Stanford baseball in the first half of the 20th Century. In 1928, he led the varsity team on a tour of Australia which made Stanford the first American team to visit the country and to play against the Australian national team.
