Biographical Information[edit]
Ron Witmeyer played college ball at Stanford University and was the starting first baseman on the 1987 and 1988 College World Series championship teams. After his junior year the Oakland Athletics drafted him in the 7th round of the 1988 Amateur Draft. In his third season of professional baseball Witmeyer made his major league debut on a loaded 1991 Athletics team that was coming off three straight World Series appearances. Witmeyer played in 11 games with the A's and had 19 plate appearances, only one of which led to a hit. Witmeyer returned to the minors in 1992 and retired after 1993 season. He did give playing baseball one more shot in 1995 when he joined the A's training camp for replacement players during the 1994-1995 players strike.
After his major league career ended, Witmeyer returned to Stanford to complete his degree in Sociology. While there he also served as a volunteer assistant coach on the 1996 baseball team. Witmeyer next joined the City College of San Francisco as their head coach from 1997-2000. He returned to the Pac-10 Conference as the hitting coach for the University of California Golden Bears from 2001-2004.
Witmeyer left baseball for a few years to return to southern California where his wife and children lived. In August 2007 he became a co-owner of Frozen Ropes San Diego, a baseball/softball training facility. He returned to a more traditional coaching role in 2014 when he became the head varsity coach at The Bishop's School where he was able to coach his sons. He stayed with the Knights through the 2020 season. He managed the independent Martinez Sturgeon in 2021, becoming the first former major leaguer to manage in the Pecos League. He became head coach of Marymount California University for 2022 but the school closed that fall.
Witmeyer returned to pro ball as the hitting coach of the Lansing Lugnuts in 2023 and Stockton Ports in 2024.
His wife, Marianne Werdel Witmeyer, was a professional tennis player on the WTA tour.
