The 1988 College World Series was played at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE from June 3 to June 11. The participating schools qualified by winning one of eight 6-team regional tournaments. 1988 marked a change in format, as the tournament was broken into 2 4-team brackets, with the the winners of each bracket meeting in a championship game.

The forty-second tournament's champion was Stanford University coached by Mark Marquess. The Most Outstanding Player was Lee Plemel of Stanford University.
