Biographical Information

William "Dutch" Fehring played college baseball for Purdue University. He was also a member of the school's football team and their 1932 National Championship basketball team (where his teammates included legendary basketball coach John Wooden). Fehring was at Purdue during 1932-34, and in June of 1934 he was in the majors.

A catcher with the Chicago White Sox, Fehring only played one game in the majors but had the distinction of tagging out Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig as he was attempting an inside-the-park home run.

After his playing career ended, Fehring went on to serve as baseball coach at Purdue from 1936 to 1942 and as baseball coach (1956-1967) and assistant football coach (1949-1966) at Stanford University. He was also an assistant football coach at University of Oklahoma (1946-1947) and UCLA (1948) and assistant baseball coach at Stanford (1949-1955). He was president of the Federación Mundial de Béisbol Amateur in 1973-1974. Fehring was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. He is in many other Hall-of-Fames, including the Stanford athletics, Purdue athletics, and American Baseball Coaches Association Halls.
