Biographical Information

John Elway was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 1979 amateur draft but did not sign with the club. He was again selected in the 1981 amateur draft by the New York Yankees this time in the 2nd round. He was already a big college football star, and scout Gary Hughes was convinced that, even though he had all the tools to become a star in baseball as well, he was fully committed to playing football, so urged the Yankees to pick him in the lower rounds only. However, owner George Steinbrenner overruled him and asked his people to take him early. He signed with the club and played right field for the Oneonta Yankees in 1982. He hit .318 in 42 games before giving up baseball for pro football.

Elway played 16 seasons as quarterback of the Denver Broncos of the NFL and led the team to Super Bowl titles in 1998 and 1999. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
