Biographical Information[edit]
Ismael Cruz has been a minor league player and manager as well as a scout and agent. His father Pablo Cruz was a scout.
Cruz was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 21st round of the 1989 amateur draft. He hit .271/.354/.310 and fielded .950 at 2B as a regular that summer for the Martinsville Phillies. In 1990, he fielded .948 at 2B and .897 in limited action at 3B for the Batavia Clippers; he batted .252/.340/.273. He was just 6-for-13 in steal attempts. He ended his playing career at that point.
Cruz scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds in Colombia, then became an agent in 1998. In 2001, he managed the DSL Padres to a 39-29 record. The Montréal Expos hired him as International Director of Scouting and Development, a role he held until 2006. From 2007-2011, he was International Scouting Director for the New York Mets. Cruz then moved to the Toronto Blue Jays as a special assistant to the GM. Cruz has had a hand in signing Octavio Acosta, Martires Arias, Alberto Baldonado, Sneider Batista, Sam Buelens, Kevin Canelon, Luis Cessa, Nabil Crismatt, Thomas De Wolf, Denis Díaz, Miller Diaz, Yucary De La Cruz, Jeurys Familia, Wilmer Flores, Gonzalez Germen, Carlos Gomez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Juan Jaime, Juan Lagares, Victor Liriano, Luis Mateo, Isaac Monrroy, Rafael Montero, John Mora, Víctor Moscote, Andrés Pérez, Hansel Rodriguez, Yeixon Ruíz, Atahualpa Severino, Rubén Tejada, Jhonathan Torres, Wilfredo Tovar, Jordany Valdespin and Juan Urbina.
