Biographical Information

Octavio Acosta has pitched as high as AAA and has appeared for the Mexican national team.

He was signed by New York Mets scouts Rafael Perez, Ismael Cruz and Gabriel Lowe in 2010. He made his pro debut with the DSL Mets 1, going 2-2 with a 4.83 ERA in 17 games. He missed 2011 and returned in 2012, going 0-1 with a 1.74 ERA in four games for the DSL Mets 1 and DSL Mets 2. In '13, he came stateside with the GCL Mets (1-2, 2.28) and St. Lucie Mets (1-1, 5.79). He made his Mexican Pacific League debut with his hometown Algodoneros de Guasave in 2013-2014 (0-1, 7.27 in 10 G). In 2014, he was with the Savannah Sand Gnats (1-2, Sv, 3.14) and Brooklyn Cyclones (3-3, 2.80).

He went to the Mexican League in 2015 with the Guerreros de Oaxaca but was hit hard (1-1, 8.68) in 8 starts. That winter, he was 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA for the Charros de Jalisco. The Fresno Grizzlies took him from the Mets in the AAA phase of the 2015 Rule V Draft. In '16, he was 2-4 with a 5.97 ERA for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in the summer; in the winter, he had a 2-3, 5.24 record for Jalisco. He was much better his second summer with the Red Devils at 14-1, 2.99. He was 10th in the LMB in ERA (between Edgar Gonzalez and Walter Silva), led in wins (2 ahead of Yohan Flande and Nestor Molina) and was 6th in strikeouts (102, between Josh Roenicke and Flande). He remained sharp in the winter at 7-3, 3.94 for Jalisco for 21 wins over the calendar year. No one in the minors and winter ball had more wins over that period.

In 2018, the Mexican League went to a split season. In the spring half, Acosta was very good at 5-1, 2.84 for the Diablos Rojos. He made Mexico's squad for the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games and did very well. He got their win over Nicaragua in a strong start (5 1/3 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 0 R) and then beat the Dominican Republic in relief (3 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 R). While the rest of his teammates were 1-4 with a 4.64 ERA, Acosta was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. Only Anthony Seise Jr. (10 IP) had more innings with a 0.00 ERA in the Games and he tied for first in wins with Lázaro Blanco, Jorge Bucardo, Vladimir Baños and Juan Colmenarez. He fell to 2-2 with a 6.15 ERA in the LMB fall season.
