Biographical Information

Yohan Flande reached the major leagues in 2014.

Flande signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in December 2004 after being scouted by Sal Agostinelli and Wilfredo Tejada. Yohan began his professional career with the DSL Phillies, going 3-6 with a save and a 2.76 ERA - the stats are somewhat deceptive as he allowed a fair number of hits and runs, but over half his runs were unearned. With the same club, he improved to 6-1, 2.08 in 2006, with a 5:1 K:BB ratio. He fell to 3-2, 2.36 in his third season with the DSL Phils.

In 2008, Yohan came stateside with the GCL Phillies, going 4-1 with a 2.19 ERA and a WHIP under one. He led the Gulf Coast League with a .200 opponent average and was third in ERA behind Nelson Pereira and Tyler Cox.

Flande split 2009 between the Clearwater Threshers (7-1, 2.52) and Reading Phillies (4-4, 4.58). He pitched for the World in the 2009 Futures Game, relieving Neftali Feliz in the second inning. He struck out Pedro Alvarez then got Chris Heisey on a grounder. Tyler Flowers and Jason Heyward both singled but Flande then struck out Danny Espinosa. Francisco Samuel relieved Yohan.

After 13 starts with Reading in 2010, Flande was 4-5 with a 4.35 ERA and finished the year at 10-8, 4.38 in 27 starts, having pitched 158 1/3 innings. He was then released by the Phillies after the season and latched on with the Atlanta Braves who assigned him to the AAA Gwinnett Braves in 2011. He was 8-8, 4.01 in 33 games as a swingman, then returned in 2012, posting a record of 6-11, 4.21. 2013 marked his third season with Gwinnett, and he finished the year at 9-7, 4.18, also making one start in AA with the Mississippi Braves. Had the Braves struggled to find pitchers to use at the big league level during that period, he would have been called up, but the team was loaded with prospects in the upper minors who were on the fast track to the big leagues, which meant that Yohan had to bide his time and accept whatever role was available for him in AAA.

A free agent after the 2013 season, Flande signed with the Colorado Rockies in 2014, a team in greater need of pitching than the Braves. It turned out to be a good move, since in spit of a 2-9, 4.42 record after 14 games with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, he got the call to Denver on June 25th. In his debut, he was facing a much-more heralded youngster also making his debut, Marco Gonzales of the St. Louis Cardinals, who was in the big leagues barely a year after having been a first-round selection in the 2013 amateur draft. Neither pitcher was involved in the decision, but Yohan did better than Marco, as he gave up 4 runs in 5 innings to his opponent's 5.
