Team History[edit]
On January 14, 2008, it was announced that the Richmond Braves would move from Richmond, Virginia to Gwinnett County, GA for the 2009 season. The Gwinnett Braves were the AAA International League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
In 2017, it was announced that the Braves were looking to change their name and submitted a number of possible names for fans to vote on. Consistent with the recent trend of minor league teams choosing highly original names, often based on local culinary specialties, the names proposed included: Big Mouths, Buttons, Gobblers, Hush Puppies, Lambchops, Sweet Teas. The main reason for this was that the team had had attendance problems since starting play and was finding it hard establishing a distinct identity while sharing a name and market with the major league Braves. In December the team announced the new name - Gwinnett Stripers.
