Mike Alvarez pitched in the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals chains from 1980 to 1984. He spent the first year with with Baltimore and split 1981 between the two organizations. His regular playing career ended in 1984, though he made one game appearances in relief in 1986 and 1992 when the team was short staffed. Overall Alvarez compiled a 25-22 record with 18 saves in 115 appearances.
Alvarez's coaching career can be broken into three phases. In phase one, Alvarez worked as a pitching coach in the Royal's minor league system. Alvarez was pitching coach for the Fort Myers Royals in 1985-1986, Appleton Foxes in 1987, Baseball City Royals in 1988-1990, Memphis Chicks in 1991-1992 and Omaha Royals in 1993-1997. The Royals did not renew his contract after the 1997 season.
His second coaching sojourn was with the Atlanta Braves organization. This was more complicated as he moved between jobs frequently. Sometimes the sources differed on his role in particular years and sometimes he was promoted in-season to fill a vacancy. He began his Braves career as the pitching coach for the Greenville Braves in 1998-1999. Alvarez returned in 2000, but was promoted to the Richmond Braves on April 14th. It appears he was a minor league roving pitching instructor in 2001-2002 and in 2004. He returned to Greenville for the 2003 season. He went back to Richmond in 2005 before spending most of 2006-2010 as a roving instructor again. He was drawn away from his instructor role in mid-May 2008 to replace Bruce Dal Canton as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans pitching coach while Dal Canton was undergoing cancer treatments. In 2011-2012, Alvarez was the pitching coach for the Mississippi Braves. One source indicated that his next assignment was serving as a pitching supervisor for the DSL Braves in 2013-2014, but this could not be confirmed. Alvarez was the pitching coach for the GCL Braves in 2015 and returned there to begin 2016. However, he was promoted to the AAA Gwinnett Braves on May 19th where he remained for the rest of the year.
The current phase of his coaching career is with the Detroit Tigers organization. He was the pitching coach for the GCL Tigers West in 2017 and early in 2018. On July 2, 2018 he was promoted to the Toledo Mud Hens when their coach, Jeff Pico, was promoted to the major leagues. He returned to the GCL in 2019 and was scheduled to return there in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic caused the minor league season to be canceled. Alvarez coached the FCL Tigers West squad in 2021 and managed the FCL Tigers in 2022.
In addition to his coaching in the states, Alvarez has extensive experience coaching in the winter leagues, particularly in the Venezuelan League.
