Biographical Information[edit]
Andrés Álvarez has played as high as AAA and has been on the Mexican national team.
He hit .329 as a high school sophomore, .371 as a junior and .350 as a senior. [1] In junior college, he batted .395 and slugged .647. [2] Transferring to Washington State, he hit .308/.381/.374 and was third in the Pac-12 Conference with 166 assists. [3] His junior year, he fell to .263/.335/.376. He hit .289/.364/.392 in 2019.
The Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the 22nd round of the 2019 amateur draft. He split the summer between the GCL Pirates (.235/.336/.326 in 38 G) and Greensboro Grasshoppers (2 for 14, 2 BB, 2 R). After the 2020 minor league season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he hit .288/.367/.482 for the '21 Grasshoppers, going 10-for-12 in steal attempts. He backed up Nick Gonzales at 2B, Jared Triolo at 3B and Liover Peguero at short. That winter, he hit .231/.302/.282 for the Puerto Rican League's Gigantes de Carolina, backing up Ethan Paul at 2B.
In 2022, he hit .220;/.339/.429 for the Altoona Curve but went 20-20 with an even 20 homers and 21 steals in 22 tries, plus he drew 64 walks. It was not bad work at all for a utility man. He was the first 20-20 man in Altoona history and the team had their share of power/speed players over the years such as Andrew McCutchen. [4] Matt Gorski was the only other Bucco farmhand to have a 20-20 campaign that season. [5] Among Pirates minor leaguers, he was 4th in home runs, tied Jared Oliva and Gorski for 9th in swipes and led in walks (one ahead of Triolo and Tsung-Che Cheng). He also tied Jeisson Rosario for the most walks in the Eastern League. He followed with a strong winter for the Caimanes de Barranquilla at .354/.428/.582 with 29 runs, 11 doubles, 7 homers and 37 RBI in 38 games. He was among the Colombian League leaders in pretty much everything.
Returning to Altoona in '23, he slipped to .215/.285/.345 with 8 home runs and 4 steals for a significant drop-off. He had another fine winter, this time in the Mexican Pacific League, as he had a .305/.370/.423 batting line for the Tomateros de Culiacán. He kept his utility role in 2024, but was now up to AAA with the Indianapolis Indians. His hitting returned as he was at .271/.360/.417 in 78 contests, backing up Peguero at both 2B and SS as well as Malcom Nuñez at 3B. He then represented Mexico in the 2024 Premier 12, starting at second base for them. In their opener, he grounded out against Venezuela's Ricardo Pinto his first time up. His first hit was off Dereck Rodriguez of Puerto Rico, part of a three-hit day. He hit .190/.227/.190 with 3 runs in 5 games for the event, handling 22 chances error-free. He was 6th with 16 assists.
