Team History[edit]

The Greensboro Grasshoppers, of the South Atlantic League and briefly in High-A East, are in the same league with perhaps their most logical natural rival for the first time since 1968. The Pittsburgh Pirates farmhands play their home games at First National Bank Field in Greensboro, NC.

MLB's 2021 Minor League Reorganization raised the 'Hoppers one level into the same post-Affiliate Era circuit with the logical regional rival Winston-Salem Dash. The move also befits the fact that the stadium was built to the Double-A standards that were in place when construction began in 2004. Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan offered a friendly wager on their first season series, putting up a pair of Wrangler jeans, which Winston-Salem's Allen Joines covered with a dozen hot Krispy Kremes; the 'Hoppers August 12th victory clinched the Kremes for Vaughan.

The 'Hoppers' 16 years with the Florida/Miami Marlins was their longest partnership, pre-dating both their current nickname and ballpark, but they dropped the Fish for the Bucs after the 2017-2018 affiliation cycle.

"Grasshoppers" is now second only to "Patriots" on the Greensboro baseball team nickname list - but it has a long way to go to catch the leader's 35 seasons. Their last nickname before "Grasshoppers" was "Bats".

Unlike the Greenville Drive or Bowling Green Hot Rods, Greensboro's colors do include green.

The 'Hoppers play Copa de la Diversión Hispanic engagement campaign games as Ocelotes de Greensboro (Greensboro Ocelots, the ocelot being a type of panther).
