Team History[edit]
The Greenville Drive, of the High-A South Atlantic League and briefly in High-A East, and their ballpark are widely credited with turning around the city's downtown.[1] The Boston Red Sox farmhands play their home games at Fluor Field at the West End in Greenville, SC.
Fluor mirrors Boston's Fenway Park in many ways. MLB's 2021 Minor League Reorganization drove the "Sally" League, and with it the Drive, up one level.
The former Capital City Bombers moved from Columbia, SC, into the new downtown Greenville ballpark in 2006, after playing 2005 in Greenville Municipal Stadium as the Greenville Bombers.
The dilapidated state of the old park had cost Greenville its place in Double-A ball after two decades in the Southern League. The Atlanta Braves had tried unsuccessfully for years to get either a new facility or at least renovations before they moved their owned-and-operated Double-A club to Mississippi as the Mississippi Braves. The net effect to Greenville was a drop of two minor league levels, although the reorganization later gave one of those back. In a second silver lining, Fluor is widely credited with revitalizing downtown Greenville - something Municipal Stadium, being neither downtown nor much of a candidate for renovation, had never done.
Despite the city name, team colors don't include green.
The Drive play Copa de la Diversión Hispanic engagement campaign games as Ranas de Rio (the River Frogs).
