Biographical Information[edit]

Chris Hess played college ball at the University of Rhode Island with second base as his primary position. The New York Yankees drafted him in the 17th round of the 2017 amateur draft and he played in their minor league system from 2017-2019. Overall he hit .220 with an OBP of .305 and a slugging percentage of .346 in 168 games. After his release in 2019, he briefly joined the Sussex County Miners of the independent Canadian-American Association (AKA Can-Am League), but appeared in only one game.

Hess then turned his attention to coaching and became a volunteer assistant coach in September, 2019 with his alma mater. He stayed in that role through 2020.

The Boston Red Sox hired him as a fourth coach for the FCL Red Sox in 2021 and Portland Sea Dogs in 2022. He then became hitting coach of the Greenville Drive in 2023. Under his tutelage the team ranked first in batting average (.259), hits (1,133), doubles (249), second in triples (36), and third in RBI (618) in the South Atlantic League on their way to a League championship. Hess returned to Portland in 2024 as their hitting coach.
