Biographical Information

Paul Abbott was called up to the Minnesota Twins in 1990 despite going 5-14, 4.56 in AAA. It was no surprise then when he started out 0-5 in the bigs for the last-place Twins. He was on the AAA shuttle for several years before coming out of nowhere to win 17 games (17-4, 4.25, 28 games) for the 116-win Seattle Mariners squad of 2001. He returned to obscurity almost immediately, finishing his major league career in a split-season affair with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Philadelphia Phillies in 2004. Not ready to call it quits yet, Abbott pitched for the Orange County Flyers in the independent Golden Baseball League in 2005. Abbott primarily wore number 37 in his career.

Following his playing days, Abbott served as an assistant coach for the Fullerton College Hornets where his sons played. He worked as the Hornets' pitching coach through the 2009 season, and possibly in 2010 as well. In addition, Abbott joined the Orange County Flyers in 2009 as their pitching coach. He was promoted to manager of the Flyers for the 2010 season.

Abbott became pitching coach of the Lowell Spinners from 2011-2012, the Greenville Drive from 2013-2014, the Salem Red Sox from 2015-2017, and Portland Sea Dogs from 2018-2019. He was scheduled to coach the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Abbott was pitching coach of the Worcester Red Sox in 2021-2023. Abbott moved to the Oakland A's' chain as pitching coach of the Midland RockHounds in 2024.

After the 2015 campaign, Abbott also worked as the pitching coach for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League.

Abbott's son, Lance, pitched at Fullerton College from 2006-2007 before transferring to Sacramento State and pitched one year in the minors. His other son, Trent, was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 2007.
