Biographical Information[edit]

Luis De Ávila has pitched in the minors and for the Colombian national team.

He was signed by the Colorado Rockies for $250,000 initially. [1] He had a 2-2, 6.16 record for the 2018 DSL Colorado team then spent 2019 on the restricted list after testing positive for a banned substance. [2] They let him go at the end of the year and he was signed by the Kansas City Royals but the 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He was roughed up for three runs in 2/3 of an inning over two games for the Caimanes de Barranquilla in the 2021 Caribbean Series, losing to Manny Barreda.

He split 2021 between the ACL Royals Gold (2 R in 5 1/3 IP) and Columbia Fireflies (5-4, 5.16 in 24 G; 59 K in 52 1/3 IP). The Atlanta Braves then took him in the minor league portion of the 2021 Rule V Draft. [3] He allowed two unearned runs in 1 1/3 IP while the Caimanes de Barranquilla became the first Colombian team to win a Caribbean Series. With the Rome Braves in 2022, he was 6-8 with a 3.49 ERA and 129 K in 126 1/3 IP. On July 2, he threw a seven-inning no-hitter to beat the Greenville Drive. [4] He edged Blas Castano for the South Atlantic League ERA title and was 5th in whiffs (between Wyatt Olds and Tekoah Roby). [5]

Pitching for Colombia in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, he got the tough assignment of facing the mighty Team USA offense. He retired Mookie Betts. Mike Trout tripled and Paul Goldschmidt walked but he escaped the jam when Nolan Arenado hit into a double play. In the second, he retired Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber then was replaced by Santiago Florez. [6]
