1959 Rule V Draft

The major league 1959 Rule V Draft was held November 30, while the minor league phase was held the same day in St. Petersburg, FL. 40 players total were drafted by the major and minor league clubs. 14 players were drafted by major league teams at a cost of $340,000, while minor league teams selected 26 players.

Of the 40 picks, 14 were selected under the new first-year player rule. Under the new rule, any free agent signed after December 5, 1958 would be subject to selection after his first year in O.B. unless he was moved to the majors. Mike Lee was the only major league pick under this rule, while the minors selected 13 players in their phase under this rule. Whereas the normal picks cost $25,000 for the major league selections, Lee cost the Cleveland Indians $15,000. The first-year selections also cost less in the high minors. Prices for AAA teams was $12,000 for regular picks and $7,500 for first-year picks. AA was set at $7,500 for regular and $6,000 for first-year, A was $4,00 for both, B was $2,000 for regular and $3,000 for first-year, and C was $1,000 for regular and $3,000 for first-year.
