Biographical Information[edit]

Woody Huyke was signed by the San Francisco Giants in 1959 after winning a Gold Medal with Puerto Rico in the 1959 Central American and Caribbean Games. He was one of Puerto Rico's top stars in that event, hitting .406 with a .625 slugging percentage, 8 RBI and 5 runs, while fielding .895 at 3B. He was 4th in the Games in average (behind Luis Sanjur, Mario Mendible and César Pérez), 3rd in slugging (after Mendible and Sanjir) and tied for 4th in RBI (behind Francisco Sánchez, Mendible and Ventura Peña). Playing for the Hastings Giants, he led the Nebraska State League in Hits (71) and HR (12) and was named All-star 3B. He was drafted by the A's organization and spent 9 years in their chain, including the 1964 Birmingham Barons.

Between 1974 and 2004, Huyke was the manager of the GCL Pirates for 29 of the 31 seasons, compiling a 718-983 record in Bradenton. Julio Garcia was the manager in 1988 and 1990. Huyke got his start for the Pittsburgh Pirates managing the 1973 Niagara Falls Pirates. He also managed the Augusta Pirates for part of 1988, replacing Jeff Cox.

Huyke has also been a coach for the GCL Pirates when not managing, including 2006-2014.
