Charlotte Hornets

From BR Bullpen

The Charlotte Hornets were named after British Lord General Cornwallis, who called the city a "veritable nest of hornets" during the Revolutionary War. It was the traditional name for all Charlotte baseball teams until it was taken by an expansion NBA franchise in 1993 (it had been unused for two decades by that point, as the Baltimore Orioles had named their Charlotte affiliate after themselves). Since then, local baseball teams have been called the Charlotte Knights.
