Infielder Cal Ermer played in the minor leagues from 1942 to 1951, missing the 1943 to 1945 seasons due to military service. He led his league in fielding percentage times times (3 at second base, 1 at third base), assists three times (2 at second, 1 at third), and putouts three times (2 at second, 1 at third). He never played above the A level in the minors but went 0-for-3 in one game in the majors with the 1947 Washington Senators.

Ermer compiled a managerial record of 1906-1728 over 26 seasons (1947-1985) in the minor leagues. He was a minor league manager for many years with the Washington Senators-Minnesota Twins franchise, and also managed in the minors for the Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and New York Yankees. He replaced Sam Mele as manager of the Twins on June 9, 1967 and led the club from sixth place when he was hired to a tie for second at the season's end. He was fired after the team finished seventh in 1968, posting a 145-129 as a big league skipper.

Ermer was also a major league coach for the Baltimore Orioles (1962), Milwaukee Brewers (1970-1971), and Oakland A's (1977), and a scout for the Twins (1969), Orioles (1963-1964), and Brewers (1972-1973).
