Biographical Information[edit]
Canadian pitcher Erik Sabrowski was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 14th round of the 2018 amateur draft, out of a junior college. He did not pitch professionally in 2019 due to an injury, after which the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues in 2020. He thus had to wait until 2021 to make his debut. He spent that season with the Fort Wayne Tincaps of the High-A Central, going 2-0, 1.86 in 8 games and 29 innings. In spite of his limited experience, he had obviously caught some scouts' eyes, as, following the season, the Cleveland Indians took him in the minor league portion of the 2021 Rule V Draft (due to the lockout, there was no major league portion that year). He then missed all of 2022 as well, again due to injury - a second Tommy John surgery that had him contemplating quitting baseball to become a social studies teacher.
He pitched in what was now the Cleveland Guardians' system in 2023, going 4-0, 2.49 in 20 games with the Akron RubberDucks of the Eastern League, and also appearing in the Arizona Fall League. In 2024, he started off with Akron, going 0-1, 0.77 in 9 games, and was promoted to the AAA Columbus Clippers on May 24th. He pitched well in the International League, with a record of 8-2, 4.38 and 53 strikeouts in 37 innings. That earned him a call-up to Cleveland when rosters expanded in September. He made his debut with the Guardians on September 4, 2024 pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief in a 4-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals with both teams in the postseason race. In 8 games, he did not allow an earned run in 12 2/3 innings, and struck out 19 batters while walking only 4. He was added to Cleveland's postseason roster and continued to pitch well, appearing in 5 games over two rounds, and allowing just 2 runs (1 earned) in 5 1/3 innings while striking out 8.
