Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Alonso Olivares played in the minor leagues from 1966 to 1970, beginning his professional career at 18 years old. With the Idaho Falls Angels of the California Angels system his first year, he went 9-3 with a 2.47 ERA in 14 games (12 starts); in 102 innings, he allowed 80 hits while striking out 131 batters. He tied Larry Hutton, Dean Burk and Archie Reynolds for the Pioneer League lead in victories. The Chicago Cubs took him in the 1966 Rule V Draft, however he never played in their organization and was returned to the Angels. Despite winning 10 games in 1968, he never had success similar to that of his first season and was out of pro ball after a couple of stints in the Mexican League. He went 16-8 overall.
