From BR Bullpen

Philippe,

send me an e-mail [1] and I'll get you added to the bullpen yahoo e-mail list. Thanks for all of the work.

Congrats on finishing with the cities. --Just me 13:05, 22 Mar 2006 (EST)

Grreat job with the cities, Philippe. --MichaelEng 11:58, 25 Mar 2006 (EST)

-- Thanks for all the cities. We're missing some Mexican Center League teams and 19th century ones, but amazing work overall! - --Mischa 13:08, 22 Mar 2006 (EST)

Hey Phillippe, can you take a look at Ian Snell's page? I'm fairly certain Ian changed his last name to his mother's maiden name, and then changed it back due to family issues with his father. John Lease 11:29, 12 June 2008 (EDT)

Stubs[edit]

I think it was a good idea to have stubs for 2006 debut players who didn't have complete pages yet, so people know which ones need work. - --Mischa 12:21, 3 November 2006 (EST)

Well, at this point, they were all labelled stubs, whether there was content or not, so the tag was not useful. Plus, we have thousands of player pages from other years that have no content and do not have the stub tag, so why only tag the 2006 ones ? --Philippe 12:28, 3 November 2006 (EST)

A lot of those with content were not stubbed (Rajai Davis, Russell Martin, Nick Markakis, etc.).

As for why the 2006 ones, it's a way to make sure that new pages are listed as needing work or not. For old pages, going back would be a) very time-consuming and b) give us a HUGE list of stubs to be worked on. Right now we already have oodles of them.

What do others think? - --Mischa 12:33, 3 November 2006 (EST)

Naming conventions[edit]

According to Naming Conventions, For all smaller places use the format:

   * if located in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico; use PLACE, STATE (Two letter ISO code)
o Las Vegas, NV not [[Las Vegas, Nevada]], Montreal, QC not [[Montreal, Quebec]]
   * if located anywhere else; use PLACE, STATE (short)

This is a bit unclear about what to do with ones where we don't know the state. Some pages have x, Dominican Republic while others just use x, which presents all kinds of inconsistency. I personally prefer the former as it distinguishes one Santo Domingo from another. This should probably be another topic of group discussion. - --Mischa 12:33, 3 November 2006 (EST)

I looked at the list for the D.R. and there were 90% marked as city only, and a few markes as city, D.R. All of these were the larger cities and linked back to the World Baseball Classic pages, at which time the move was probably made (all the links from player pages are to the cities only). So I decided to make theme all consistent, as they originally were. --Philippe 15:36, 3 November 2006 (EST)

Thanks for working out some of the rules, glossary, etc. pages that have been wanted. - --Mischa 11:05, 5 November 2006 (EST)

Hey Philippe, where do you find the partial season managerial records? --Jeff 13:27, 19 October 2007 (EDT)

Some of the old Sporting News baseball guides give them. --Philippe 13:32, 19 October 2007 (EDT)

Featured articles[edit]

Philippe, can you comment on the proposed featured articles? Also, do you want to submit a request for 1946 WS - I think it would be a good one. - --Mischa 12:05, 8 November 2007 (EST)

Places category[edit]

I think the places category is being mostly eliminated to make way for easier-to-navigate "settlements in" and "subdivisions of" categories. The bot unfortunately left some articles category-less. - --Mischa 09:04, 7 December 2007 (EST)

Danny Rombley[edit]

I wrote up a page for Danny Rombley, a Dutch national team outfielder. As he played for six years in the Expos farm system and you have a few Expos media guides IIRC, I was wondering if you could add other information. - --Mischa 19:26, 16 December 2007 (EST)

Longest game[edit]

Philippe, you're the only one who raised objections about making the longest game in baseball history the new featured article. Have they all been addressed now that the article has been edited some more? - --Mischa 10:57, 25 March 2008 (EDT)

Good work on getting glossary terms in here. --Jeff 16:18, 5 April 2008 (EDT)

Clear[edit]

Please do not take out the Clear templates after the vital information on the pages I am making as you recently did with the Rafael Perez page. Once I have made a page for each former Kinston Indian, the next thing on my to-do list is to add photos to all the pages and the Clear line will be needed then. Thanks. 69.68.238.142 08:40, 30 May 2008 (EDT)

Adminship[edit]

Hello. I was wondering how you become an administrator here. I'm an administrator and bureacrat at some other wikis, but I can't seem to find how you become one here. Regards, RyRy5 (talk) 03:25, 31 May 2008 (EDT)

Cobb[edit]

I'd like to propose the Ty Cobb article for featured status with all your additions but we need to list sources as in Dave Nilsson and Martin Dihigo. Can you do so? - --Mischa 12:17, 24 June 2008 (EDT)

Two questions:

1) Could you add the footnoted sources to the Cobb article?

2) If you have time, can you help wikify the calendar. I'm through July 22, only 2 weeks ahead of the current date. Since the main BR site links to the calendar, I want to stay ahead but it will be tough if I do it all myself. - --Mischa 12:01, 8 July 2008 (EDT)

Mischa, I won't have access to a computer for another week or so. I used the time I had this week to put in the 2008 All-Star rosters. --Philippe 04:51, 10 July 2008 (EDT)

Hawaii[edit]

Should we add USA to all the players born in Puerto Rico? Puerto Rico holds the same status now that Hawaii did then. 69.68.238.142 12:54, 24 July 2008 (EDT)

All-Stars[edit]

Are you only doing 2008? I think we're missing 2006 and 2007 as well. - --Mischa 12:08, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

I was travelling again with a bit of free time and access to a computer one afternoon. I'll do the 2006 and 2007 first-time All-Stars now. --Philippe 08:52, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

Question[edit]

Hi Philippe. A few months ago, you told me "To become an administrator, you have to contribute some quality edits for a while and be selected by one of the key-holders of the site. " What exactly do you mean by the "key holders" of this site? Do you mean the bureaucrats? Or do you mean the actual founders of baseball-reference bullpen? Thanks, RyanCross ('2'talk) 04:34, 9 August 2008 (EDT)

Philippe, I think you are able to give adminship to users. If you look at the list of administrators, you are a bureaucrat, along with Sean, Mischa and Jeff. Bureaucrats are able to give users adminship and bureaucrat permissions. That, is you. All bureaucrats have to do is go to Special:Userrights, type in the name of a user in the box, search, highlight the user rights you would like to give, and save the user rights, and whatever you highlighted in the left section will be what the user is now. -- RyanCross (talk) 15:02, 9 August 2008 (EDT)
Ah, of course. That's why we're here isn't it? Oh, and I just wanted to say thanks for all the work you've done for years here. You've really helped this site out. :) Thanks Philippe. And I was wondering, I noticed that links such as major league isn't linked in most baseball player biographical articles. Why is that? Would love to learn. :) I wouldn't want to do something wrong when I write articles. Thanks, RyanCross (talk) 15:29, 10 August 2008 (EDT)

Working on the Olympics, I won't finish August 14 wikifying by tomorrow. If you have a chance, be my guest. - --Mischa 12:57, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

Moving[edit]

If you're using Verizon for your home internet connection, it might take them a while to set it up. It took us about 2 1/2 weeks, about 3 hours on the phone with them and 2 visits from their techs (even though the problem was on their end). - --Mischa 10:30, 25 August 2008 (EDT)

Hope your internet connection (and phone and utilities) are up and running on time. May you be out of your boxes within the near future as well. You can always freecycle the used boxed away once they're unpacked. - --Mischa 08:48, 3 September 2008 (EDT)

Grady Hatton[edit]

Phillippe, thanks for your work on the Grady Hatton page, I appreciate your help. I have one suggestion...under Notable Achievements the small chart on his Houston managers career is a bit repetitious, as it is covered in his managers career also. If you have any suggestions on the way things should be linked, as I noticed you made changes, please let me know and I will try to follow what is needed. No one has ever given me any directions as what is the correct way to link dates, teams, names, etc. Thanks again. --Dugout 14:39, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

Disambig[edit]

While you're disambiging (not a word) Ramon Ramirez, be aware of the Panamanian national team pitcher Ramon Ramirez, who should be listed on the disambig page. I have one link to him at Ramon Ramirez Canejo - --Mischa 16:58, 2 September 2008 (EDT)2

Actually, it appears to be "Camejo" according to the IBAF site. I don't see this at many other sites, though. Maybe Ramon R. Ramirez or Ramon Ramirez (Panama) would be better. - --Mischa 17:12, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

Dal Canton[edit]

Dal Canton died at St. Clair Hospital, which is in Mt. Lebanon, not in Pittsburgh. - --Mischa 20:33, 5 November 2008 (EST)

This looks like a case where the SABR Bio Committee got it wrong. I'll send Bill Carle an e-mail. Thanks.

The mailing address for some Pittsburgh suburbs is given as Pittsburgh but they're not legally part of the city. That could explain the problem. - --Mischa 20:45, 5 November 2008 (EST)

Filling In Missing Names[edit]

Hey, thanks. I'm actually compiling a supplement to the Lahman database, ostensibly for use with Baseball Mogul, so when I run across an empty name field I check the Bullpen if it's missing here as well. --69.143.184.193 23:21, 1 April 2009 (EDT)

SABR LINK[edit]

The existing SABR links on pages already posted work just as they have and should. The new link throws you in to the BR Bullpen MILB site which does not give you the team nickname or the full league name unless you drag your mouse over the wanted info and this makes it three (3) times as long to do a 2000 word Bio. In the past I have always printed out a page of the SABR info which had all the info needed without trying to skip back and fourth to find , usually several, old time teams nick-names or full league names. Here is the old Saber Data Base link, please try it. http://minors.sabrwebs.com/cgi-bin/index.php Frankly I did two smaller Bio's under the new arrangement, simple ones, and it just tripled the time needed to finish them. I am open to any suggestions. --Dugout 13:19, 7 April 2009 (EDT) 2

SABR LINK[edit]

I do not disagree with what you say, changes are going to happen. I had my system set up to work on the Bio's in a certain way and this change just means an adjustment in my plans. Technology is moving fast... but this is not my ball park, I'm just playing in it. Thanks for your thoughts. I do appreciate communication when things like this pop up. The SABR Data Base has been such a big help with their in-put and cooperation over the past two years I cannot fault their plans.--Dugout 19:51, 7 April 2009 (EDT)

Cuban baseball sites[edit]

Some of the main Cuban sites seem to be blocked from US sources but not other ones (I don't know if Cuba or the US is behind this silliness). Can you see if you can get on to the beisbolcubano.cu site, then go to the statistics for the 48th Serie Nacional (it should be on the right hand side). If you could copy and paste team stats and the top 10 for pitching and batting leaders and email them to me, I'd be most appreciate. I love following Cuban baseball. I hate how politics interferes with people following baseball. - --Mischa 08:38, 8 May 2009 (EDT)

More about Boss Schmidt[edit]

I do think that if you're going to change vital statistics on a page (but not yet on another page), that you ought to note it in the DISCUSSION page so that people know it was based on sound source material. - Randy 18:49, 10 May 2009 (EDT)

2=Some Questions=[edit]

Philippe. Thanks for the prompt response. Moving forward, it would probably save both of us a lot of time in the long run if I can get clear idea of what exactly is 'verboten' in this context. Knowing that the keyword here is stylistic consistency, I guess I can extrapolate much of this from the changes you've made already [please feel free, however, to add to, subtract from and just generally refine my surmises where necessary], e.g.:

  • excessive length, e.g. extended quotes, digressions etc.
  • blockquotes,
  • font variation [i.e. underlining, boldface, italics (except for names of newspapers and periodicals or is a bit of emphasis allowed?)]
  • no sourcing except within the sentence [ i.e. 'So-and-so reports,' 'According to so-and-so,' 'in the words of so-and-so,' et al]

Now here's the only one that I don't get:

  • no external links? Is this correct? Of all these apparent conventions, this is the only one that I don't understand.

Case in point: your 5/17/59 revison, and I quote:

Now, saying RC 'hit a colossal home run' is all well and good but if you're not going to have supporting quotes or visual aids, esp. the Waveland Avenue and scoreboard photo links, then it all becomes pretty toothless, vague and generic [akin to Maraniss' half-hearted, unresearched references [i.e. "At times, Clemente could clout the ball monstrous distances..."]

Without the photos, or a picture of Wrigley Field in one's own mind, seeing "RC hit a colossal HR in WF would not even tell me that the ball left the stadium, much less that it traveled at least 500 feet.

And substituting an internal link to an empty page called 'scoreboard,' which tells me nothing (except, perhaps, that I shouldn't bother clicking on this page's links), for an external link to a picture which shows me Wrigley's scoreboard, thus efficiently giving me considerable info re the distance and direction of RC's HR (a welcome corrective to the almost universally incorrect presentation of said direction) makes no sense to me.

Anyway, re internal vs. external, I'm happy to use internal links and I do so whenever possible, but when there's a great source of supplementary info in a given instance for which no equivalent exists inside the Bullpen, shouldn't it be used?

Also, looking at your 7/25/54 revision, I see that even my internal link was deleted - actually a link to my personal BP project, the Roberto Clemente Timeline [aka "Moonshots, Milestones and More"] I've been working on intermittently over the past year, along with the bibliography and the general Clemente page. Although in this particular case, I've simply added a bit more text which I think works within your framework, in many cases that might not be an option. Was that deletion just a case-specific judgment call or is there a problem in principle with me directing readers to BP's Clemente timeline for additional info?

Anyway, enough with the monologue here.

Thanks again for the feedback &, BTW, good job on 7/25/56. - --David

Okeydoke[edit]

Again, thanks for the prompt response. I've just deleted what I believe was the last remaining external link (7/25/60). I already got rid of the footnotes. And, although it may be hard to believe (based on the still somewhat distended nature of a couple of my entries which I fully understand may require additional pruning), I can tell you with a straight face and a clear conscience that even the most seemingly bloated of those are in fact extremely truncated and/or streamlined versions of the analagous Clemente page material. In any case, moving forward, I now have more to go on and will proceed accordingly. Thanks again - --David

Thanks yet again.[edit]

Thank you so much, Philippe. That's very gratifying to hear and it's nice of to you take the the time to say it. In a sense, it's doubly gratifying in that the two attributes you cited apply at least as much to Clemente himself. And, while no one old enough to have seen the man play – even the prototypical out-of-town RC admirer such as I, or, for that matter, Maraniss himself – needed Maraniss to know about his 'passion,' the thoroughness is something that only became clear – at least to me – gradually over the past decade while reading and compiling the observations, both contemporary and retrospective, of his peers. For someone such as myself, who now envies Art Howe and Ken Macha, not for their up-and-down baseball careers, but rather their Pittsburgh boyhoods, discovering this material – especially the contemporary reporting – has been a real treat as well as an education.

As regards as any claim I might lay to the aforementioned attributes, Clemente's passion, for one, remains contagious, as it was when watching him 40-some-odd years ago. On the other hand, whatever thoroughness can be discerned in my work may be born, as much as anything, out of a frustration with the heretofore unthorough and utterly half-assed level of knowledge and diligence displayed across the board – i.e. sports talk 'pundits,' online Bill James wannabes, even certain Pulitzer-Prize-toting biographers. Now, I shouldn't be too hard on DM. As spotty as his scholarship is re biographical details, particularly as regards fact checking sole-source oral history nuggets, and as incomplete and generic his picture of RC as a player, he still presents some lovely and occasionally enlightening personal vignettes. After all, each of the major bios written thus far has its own particular strengths. Markusen and Wagenheim, in particular, being oral history treasure troves; Arnold Hano (esp. the "Baseball Stars of _ _ _ _ " chapters) and Phil Musick (esp. "Reflections On Roberto") offer vivid recreations of the player from people – who also happen to be excellent writers – who actually saw the man play (Musick, who saw him play pretty much every day for the last four or five years of his career, and Hano, who got to see him in his physical prime, pretty much any time RC came to California from '58 on ).

One thing all the bios have in common, sad to say, is an alarming amount of biographical inaccuracy. But, ultimately, one has to take the RC story where one can get it, in bits and pieces, all parts of the patchwork quilt that makes up our picture of the indelible yet elusive 'Citizen Clemente.' Anyway, for all my gripes, I only hope I will be able to keep up my end of the bargain, to 'walk the walk', to – as per your request – "keep it up" long enough to see this project through to, if not a conclusion (as I can't quite envision the case ever being 'closed' on Clemente, nor should it be, nor, for that matter, does the Bullpen format allow it to be, which I love), at least a stable yet fluid posture that presents a useful and, perchance, enjoyable, resource for fan and researcher alike. My. I do go on, don't I? Nuff said. Catch you later - --David

A Few More Questions[edit]

Hey, Philippe. I don't mean to be obtuse, but perhaps running through the evolution of the following item will give me a bit more clarity. Following are three versions of the 3/14/66 entry which I introduced on 1/15, that you edited on 1/16 and that I re-edited a few hours ago.

VERSION 1 (David)

  • 1966 - “Roberto Clemente’s three-run homer in the eighth inning powered the Pirates to their fourth straight exhibition victory. Clemente’s 450-foot blast came after Manny Mota and Gene Alley singled.” Judging from this Associated Press item, the early indications are that manager Harry Walker's call for increased power production has not fallen on deaf ears. In case this hint is somehow too subtle or ambiguous, Clemente will amplify it by about 50 feet exactly ten days from this date.

VERSION 2 (Philippe's Edits)

  • 1966 - Roberto Clemente's three-run homer in the eighth inning powers the Pirates to their fourth straight exhibition victory. Clemente's 450-foot blast comes after Manny Mota and Gene Alley single. Judging from the Associated Press's report, the early indications are that manager Harry Walker's call for increased power production from his right fielder has not fallen on deaf ears. In case this hint is somehow too subtle or ambiguous, Clemente will amplify it by about 50 feet in exactly ten days.

OK. You've removed the quotation marks. I can't say I exactly understand why. To preserve the 'present tense' mode? Or should one wait to introduce a quote until after one's established the present tense as the prevailing mode. In any case, if one's determined to do away with the quote marks, there's not much point in retaining any reference to an 'Associated Press report'. It just ends up being confusing, it seems to me. And while I appreciate you trying to change as little as possible of my wording, retaining the wording of a quote after you've removed the quote marks is another matter. I don't include most of these quotes because of the quality of the writing, which, at least in the case of the wire service stuff, is mostly clunky and ham-handed. I include them because they are contemporary first-hand accounts, i.e. eye-witness testimony which lends credibility and authority to the numbers I'm throwing around. Without the marks, you have the worst of both worlds, eyewitness accounts reduced to hearsay, and clumsily worded hearsay at that. Also, why you removed the internal 'March 24' link from 'exactly ten days' is not clear to me since you retained the link to 'March 14' in your revision of the March 24 entry. Bearing that in mind, I came up with the following version, leaving the quote marks off, but also getting rid of the AP reference and touching up the prose:

VERSION 3 (David's edits of edits)

  • 1966 - Roberto Clemente's three-run, 450-foot home run powers the Pirates to their fourth straight exhibition victory. Clemente's blast follows eighth-inning singles by Manny Mota and Gene Alley and, judging from its epic dimensions, the early indications are that manager Harry Walker's call for increased power and run production from his already raking right fielder has not fallen on deaf ears. And just in case these indications are somehow too subtle or ambiguous, Clemente will amplify them by about 50 feet in exactly ten days.

As I said, I've left off the quote marks and rearranged the info contained in the original quote, also combining the final sentence and the first 'non-quote' sentence, plus improving some of my own wording. I also felt compelled to reintroduce - albeit in somewhat embellished form - "from his right fielder" since this was, after all, a request made specifically to Clemente to, in effect, reprise his 1961 performance. And, in closing, I did leave off the 'March 24' link but I still don't see the point. I mean, if I'm interested in this passage and I see "in exactly ten days," I'm gonna want to see what that's all about. If I've figured out the format by that time, I can do the math and click on the calendar. Fine, but why not make it as easy as possible? Is it the 'disguised' aspect? That is to say, would simply 'March 14' or even "... in exactly ten days, on March 24.' be a preferred option? Anyway, just some thoughts. Sorry to throw so much virtual ink your way, but what can I say? It is what it is, and I am what I am. Later - --David 03:06, 24 January 2010 (EST)

One Down, One to Go[edit]

Good. Thanks, that's a useful distinction [re direct quotes of routine play-byplay] that should make decisions considerably simpler going forward. And, yeah, I had noticed the lack of activity on your end and, accordingly, started to feel like I was getting the hang of the calendar conventions. It's just that I missed your 1/16 edit at the time so when I noticed it for the first time last night, I suddenly had the sinking feeling that maybe the week's lull was do to you being out of town or otherwise indisposed and that, over the next few days, I was going to see a wholesale revamping of a week's worth of contributions. Kudos to you for quickly defusing that concern.

I would, though, still like to get your thoughts on the point I explored towards the end of paragraphs 4 and 6, re internal links, not internal within the bullpen, but simply within the calendar itself, i.e. date to date. Specifically re the 3/14/66 and 3/24/66 entries, since we have retained the retrospective link [i.e. '24' to '14', assuming, of course, that that wasn't just an oversight on your part], is there not some way, consistent with your conception of this ever-expanding contraption that is the calendar, to reinstate some version of the '14' to '24' link? Or is is there a problem with prospective as opposed to retrospective links? Thanks again - --David 11:46, 24 January 2010 (EST)

Gotcha[edit]

Good, that too is useful info. Looking back now at our respective 1/16 versions, I see that, contrary to my first impression, you didn't just remove the link, but changed the wording as well – changed for the better, I might add. Bearing that in mind. I will reinsert the link, retaining your much less stilted wording. Thanks again, P. U R a conscientious correspondent indeed. I can't overstate my appreciation for that fact and for your obvious attention to detail. Well.... give me a couple of hours and I probably could overstate it, but we won't go there. Suffice it to say ... thanks again - --David 12:44, 24 January 2010 (EST)

Well done[edit]

Excellent job on 7/29/68 – turned that sucker into a lean, mean, fighting machine... with salient points intact, no less - --David 01:08, 28 January 2010 (EST)

Huh?[edit]

Picking on me? Far from it. Remarkably restrained is more like it, IMHO. And, I might add, quite skillful when opting to employ the editorial scalpel.

But, re the rest of your message, I must confess I'm confused if not utterly clueless. 'Designated Hitter'? I clicked on that link (not that I had any idea what business any of my contributions would have being there) and found nothing there. I went though my recent contributions (1969 and everything else) and everything seems present and accounted for, even - to my mind - the most likely suspect, June 12, 1969. PLease enlighten me - --David 14:16, 01 February 2010 (EST)

Re January 31: Who, me?[edit]

Thanks for the info, P. The item in question is not one I contributed, though, so I'm still not clear how or why I got that message. In any case, regarding one that is my handiwork, I have to fight you off a little bit on Oct 16, 1971. While combining the two entries is clearly the way to go, and I appreciate the retention of details re RC's exploits, having a somewhat lengthy entry on this game without making clear what everybody who watched the game knew, i.e. that FRob won the game with his legs, or to be more accurate, about half a leg, is doing a disservice to unwitting readers, to say nothing of Robinson himself. Moreover, the extensive damage he did to himself in the process makes clear, retroactively, the immense significance of RC'S 9th-inning heave. So I'm re-affixing a slightly consolidated version of the excised material as follows:

While this throw doesn't affect the game's outcome, simply by extending the game, it will force Baltimore's best player, Frank Robinson, to win this game with his legs, challenging the arm of centerfielder Vic Davalillo on two consecutive plays – which he does successfully but at a great cost, namely an aggravated right Achilles tendon and, worse still, a torn left hamstring. Thus, in Game Seven, the O's will have the services of their best player in name only. The spirit is willing, but the visibly hobbled Robinson's flesh is, sadly, unable.

I certainly hope the first sentence, at the very least (or some slightly revised version of it), is to your liking, since it makes clear both Robinson's tremendous effort and its cost and, accordingly, the tremendous significance it confers retroactively upon RC's throw. Of course, I hope you can live with the last two sentences as well, though the passage functions reasonably well minus either the last or the last two.

That's it for now. Thanks again - --David 02:07, 02 February 2010 (EST)

Cool[edit]

Aw shucks. I bet you say that to all your wonderful inputters.

P.S. I had to tweak the last sentence (though my initial wording didn't clearly differentiate, the hamstring tear is not pre-existing; FR tears it going first to third) as follows:

In doing so, F-Robbie tears his left hamstring and aggravates an already damaged right Achilles tendon; he will be but a shadow of himself in the decisive 7th game. - --David 15:02, 02 February 2010 (EST)

Just thought I'd/think I'll check[edit]

I just noticed, as I was cleaning up yesterday's hastily executed May 27, 1964 entry, that, if my somewhat suspect short-term memory serves, unique among all the dates to which I've contributed, every pre-existing May 27 contribution is in the past tense. Should I take this as evidence that the prevailing 'You are there' approach stems from a policy decision made sometime after the calendar was started and, in particular, after the May 27 entries? This seems the unavoidable inference and my initial inclination was to simply 'clean up' the offending entries. But rather than tweak a bunch of other people's work and then discover that I've made, as my – or somebody's – mother used to say, an ASS out of U and ME, I thought/think I'd/I'll ask. Thanks - --David 12:47, 03 February 2010 (EST)

Done[edit]

Thanks, Mischa and/or Philippe. I've cleaned up May 27, though I did do just a bit of ASSUMING, re the first item:

Re the final clause, I give 'Chicago' precedence over 'his' and, accordingly, have changed the latter to 'its.' If I've guessed wrong, it's easy enough to remedy. Thanks, gentlemen - --David 13:43, 03 February 2010 (EST)

Claxton Shield winner[edit]

While updating tomorrow's news, check baseball.com.au to see if the Claxton Shield winner was determined. We've been noting the results of the championship game in recent years. It was 1-0 in the best of 3 after today- --Mischa 13:02, 5 February 2010 (EST)

Huh??[edit]

OK, I give up. What's up with that? I've done a GODZILLION article links just that way, mostly the RC page but others as well. I don't know about the latter, but the RC page has received considerable scrutiny and some revision from at least two grizzled BP veterans (i.e. Mischa & Kinston Eagle) and never have I heard WORD ONE about it. The WHOLE POINT of having these links is 1) to give curious readers access to additional info if they want it, 2) to make that access easy AND 3) to make the existence of such access obvious. Including the link within the title accomplishes all three. The solution you've imposed almost seems designed to thwart such access. So once again, please clarify. I was planning on putting in a bunch of Relaford links and I'm not going to proceed until we straighten this out. - --David 12:21, 15 February 2010 (EST)

Ohhkayy[edit]

So I think we've reached some common ground on the issue of corporal punishment vis-a-vis helpless domestic animals and a quick consult with my French-Canadian phrase-book yields the rough translation: 'no big deal.' So far, so good. The question then becomes: What exactly is it that is 'NBD'? As in, R U saying it's NBD if I proceed with my somewhat quirky presentation... or not... or perhaps some happy medium - i.e. keep the links in the titles but lose the boldface. Forgive me if I'm a tad slow on the uptake but what can I say? I guess I don't get out much. In the absence of a clear sense of what exactly is being said to me, I must opt for maddeningly 'obtuse' over unapologetically 'obnoxious.' - --David 21:34, 15 February 2010 (EST)

What's New[edit]

I agree that a section of suggestions for "What's New" would be great. I try to keep a list of ideas but often miss a lot of good candidates. Maybe the What's New discussion page would be a good place? - --Mischa 10:09, 24 February 2010 (EST)

There's also probably room to add one or two of your recent articles to the current section - a few more lines doesn't throw off the symmetry of the front page. - --Mischa 10:10, 24 February 2010 (EST)

The Return of 'Huh??'[edit]

While I can well understand that, much like Rex Ryan, my relatively distended and sometimes elephantine entries in this venue must be prepared to undergo the occasional surgical intervention, I do have to say I'm a little puzzled to find one of my more-than-2_1/2-month-old contributions (April 10, 1968, last revised Jan 22, 2010) all of a sudden not merely edited but deleted outright. Have you been out of the loop for a while and now just noticed this item? Is this the beginning of a trend I should know about? - --David 14:26, 13 April 2010 (EST)

OK, Let's try this[edit]

Thanks, P. I'm about to put up a version that runs a tad longer but does incorporate, as per your suggestion, additional content and context - i.e. RC's 3rd-inning HR plus the significance of Bunning's failure as both a foreshadowing and a microcosm of his underwhelming performance as a Pirate. Let me know what you think - --David 20:55, 13 April 2010 (EST)

A few more touches[edit]

That's good. Just a few more minor changes here: 1) changing my own wording - 'answer' for 'solution' 2) 'a' for 'an' (left over from when it preceded "all-too-accurate...' etc. rather than "foreshadowing...'). On second thought, how about changing that whole fragment to "Jim Bunning, fresh off his career year with Philly, provides an unwelcome harbinger of what will be a very trying season and, in so doing, marks the beginning of the distinctly mediocre final phase of his HOF ML career." 3) "those signature moments" for "the trademark moments" 4) "squander" for "waste" - --David 03:28, 14 April 2010 (EST)

My Pleasure[edit]

The pleasure is mine indeed. As one who's done precious little creative collaboration, our occasional interactions have been something of a revelation. I've enjoyed myself and benefitted greatly, both from our back-and-forth revisions and from the process as a whole - i.e. that of adapting many of my pre-existing RC snapshots for inclusion in the wider baseball universe represented by the calendar. It certainly gets me out of my comfort zone and that's a good thing - even if I do have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, on occasion.

The one favor I would request, though, is that, in the future, if any of my offerings seem (à la 4/10/68) similarly problematic or even intractable, just give me a heads up before consigning it to oblivion; more often than not, I think I'll be able to come up with some elements that more fully integrate that particular moment into the broader baseball context.

Thanks again, P. Keep up the good work. - --David 20:56, 14 April 2010 (EST)

Re: 4/17/59 links[edit]

So, BTW, did your Clemente/Pizarro internal link excisions reflect an objection to these links in principle or just their clunky/obtrusive manifestation, i.e. the parenthetical 'see so-and-so and so-and so?' You may have noticed I worked on it again yesterday sans links simply to improve my original, terribly awkward wording, but my preferred option would be what I've just now come up with, which restores the links in more integrated fashion. On the other hand, if need be, the linked sentence can simply be lopped off and it'll work pretty much as is - simply remove "once again" and reinsert ", for the third consecutive season" in between "poised" and "to."

As before, if you need to makes changes, I guess I'll find out soon enough. OTOH, if u b cool with it as is, please let me know. And, either way, I am curious re my opening question.

Oh, and BTW, I also noticed in your recent revisions, on at least one occasion, you replaced my HR with "homer'. I've seen many entries using P for pitcher , C for catcher, etc. While I could never bring myself to go quite that bare-bones, using "HR" was my concession to concision with what I deemed a universally understood baseball space-saver.)

Are those one-letter abbreviations simply relics from an earlier point in the calendar's existence, before a consensus had emerged on stylistic conventions? Speaking of which, just what is the emerging consensus on abbreviations? - --David 19:36, 20 April 2010 (EST)

Arnedo[edit]

BR Minors and thebaseballcube both list Rolando Arnedo as being born in Capital, AR. I assume this means the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, as I can't find any city named Capital there. Can you confirm from an old Expos Media Guide? - --Mischa 10:44, 23 April 2010 (EDT)

Halladay[edit]

I don't mind if you want to add something to someone's bullpen page, but please stop thinking what you want to add is better or more important. I don't appreciate it when I add something, and then you go and totally remove it, just to put in what you think is more important. Why don't you and Mischa just run the whole website? What are the rest of us doing? You guys snoop along behind us and change stuff. JaxJaguar 13:02, 30 May 2010 (EDT)

Iglesias defected one game into the 2008 World Junior Championship. He hit .322/.358/.382 for La Habana in 2007-2008, fielding .964 as their starting shortstop. As a rookie in 2006-2007, he was 17 for 85 with 3 doubles and 4 walks. He fielded .939 as a backup at SS to Michel Rodriguez and also played a couple games at 2B (no errors) - --Mischa 10:52, 9 May 2011 (EDT)

RE: Navigation boxes etc.[edit]

Hey Philippe. Sorry for the delay; I've had a lot on my plate and I wasn't quite sure what I thought about the changes. Well, let's see. To begin with, thanks so much for taking an interest. And, although I do miss seeing much of the page's contents when arriving at the main page (and should I thus assume there's no way to display the photo, vital info & the box, three across?), the addition of the dialogue box, in and of itself, makes great sense - especially given my particular focus on - and devotion to - those ancillary pages (into which I've managed to inject many of the highlights from a decade's worth of intermittent RC research). OTOH, I would have some suggestions re the ordering and titling of some of the links.

RE the Toolbox: Although I'm aware that the layout of links to what are now 5 separate pages is largely academic, people do, I think, do still tend to read from left to right, so there might be at least symbolic value in restoring my original sequence: i.e. The Arm, The Glove, The Legs, The Bat, The Club (IOW, progressing from the most to the least acknowledged of RC's assets).

RE the Bibliography: In both the bibliography page and the main page's table of contents, both "TSN" & "Miscellaneous" are under the subheading, "Newspapers & Periodicals." IOW, absent said subheading, 'Miscellaneous' doesn't really get it done. My suggestions would be 'Miscellaneous Articles' or 'All Other Newspapers and Periodicals.'

BTW, what's particularly disruptive to me, Bullpen-wise, is not your intervention, but rather the global change re blockquotes that seems to have occurred while I was away. Thus I've assigned myself the tedious task of purging my pages of the many examples of bq's within bq's within bq's. Even minus my perhaps wanton over-utilization of the feature, I have to say that the basic bq now just looks like crap. Or at least it does part of the time - or to part of the people. Which brings me to the next question, is any reason that these effects (automatic italicizing, miniaturization, plus the lame box enclosures) are only visible when not logged in? (Seems particularly counterintuitive to me to have only the crappy looking version available to people who might be checking out the site for the first time but, hey, that's just me.)

Anyhoo, those are my initial thoughts; thanks again for your work on the RC page. I've got to run so I'll leave you with that for now. - --David 22:59, 9 May 2011 (EDT)

Hey, Philippe, thanks for the rapid response. I've got 3 items:

1) Actually, I was really hoping that 3 across WAS do-able (i.e. the way it is now, plus the NB all the way to the right) because that would sure look a hell of a lot better than what's up there now, which looks even clunkier than the first revision. 2) Perhaps not of earth-shaking import, but I kind of prefer 'All Other Newspapers and Periodicals' (or even without the 'All Other' if necessary) since it gives much more the sense of something comprehensive which, after all is what that section is, i.e. the most extensive and accessible section of the three. 3) I don't see where to go under 'preferences' to change the default display. - --David 17:46, 10 May 2011 (EDT)

OK, 3 items today:

1) RE your NB relocation: That's basically back to your 1st version, no? In any case, the main problem with all versions thus far is that, thanks to the fact that the main page's table of contents is totally out of view (as opposed to the immediately visible NB), the very EXISTENCE of said TOC and, more important, the content itself - i.e Bio, Notable Achievements, Related Sites - could easily go entirely unnoticed by (what we hope are) the gazillions of uninitiated visitors. One solution which may or may not be possible but occurs to me immediately (the question being whether or not one can do internal as well as external links with the NB) would be include in the NB a link to the TOC- e.g. 'Contents,' situated next to or directly beneath 'Roberto Clemente.'

2) RE the Bibliography links: Whereas MIsc Articles' is really the main attraction (i.e. a massive Clemente bibliographic chronology, composed almost entirely of links to full text, free of charge) as opposed to the much more specialized TSN (available only by subscription to POR, either individually or via institutional tie-in, e.g. SABR membership), I would strongly suggest something like the following layout:

Books ● Newspapers and Periodicals (full text, free of charge)

TSN (full text available to POR subscribers)

3) RE adjusting the default display: After selecting 'BRef (default)' and saving, I've obtained the exact opposite of what I was seeking. Now I'm not getting the new display even when logged out. I tried to undo this by returning to 'My Preferences' and reverting to 'Monobook' and although that reversion has successfully been saved, I still can't access the new 'look.' Now, not to belabor the point, but I've believe I've made it clear I think the new 'look' looks like shit. However, that's obviously not my call. It is what it is; therefore I need to be able to minimize the damage that decision does to pages into which I've put embarrassingly massive quantities of time and effort. Now perhaps that's not an issue for most users; perhaps BR Bullpen, contrary to my fondest hopes, gets barely a whisper of walk-in trade. Still, I do frequently disseminate these links, via emails, blogs and Facebook posts. Moreover, I daresay the vast majority of my recipients are NOT registered Bullpen users. Thus, in one fell (unwitting) swoop, I've embarrassed myself, inconvenienced others and given my own credibility a big hit. This is beginning to get MILDLY ANNOYING. If someday, perhaps in a future life, somebody could explain to me just how it works that concealing from me how my work would appear to the 'real world' could do anything other than create just the sort of situation I've just described and, thus, merely postpone even GREATER 'upset,' I'll be all ears. But for now, perhaps we could just correct this current screw-up. - --David 15:31, 11 May 2011 (EDT)

Okeydoke. I'll contact Sean about the default display issue. OTOH, re the nav box, my primary issue there is neither look nor location, not even so very much about adding more info (although we'll agree to disagree on that) but rather (as I indicated in #1 above) about preventing the navbox logjam from concealing the very existence of the rest of the page (hence my suggestion of a link to the main TOC, which, BTW, you never addressed; perhaps it's not possible after all?). And BTW, P, I'm not entirely immune to hints ('can't help you more,' 'beats me,' 'Cheers,' et al). Still, "You could try moving the nav box"???!!!! Well, Duh!!! If I had the faintest clue how to manipulate the NB, or edit it in any way, or even to access it for editing, do you think I would keep pestering you with these pissant requests? (Well, maybe you do - beats me.) Now, if, instead of advising me to do something I obviously have no idea how to do, you could offer some hints on how to it, or otherwise work with the NB, or at least direct me to said info, then you would be achieving two eminently worthwhile objectives - i.e. helping to transform your excellent idea into an entirely unmixed blessing, and, more important, getting me out of your hair (at least for a while). Just a thought... - --David 20:42, 11 May 2011 (EDT)

Thanks for that, Philippe; it quickly becomes apparent, however, that, short of splitting up the vital info or placing the box itself out of immediate view (which of course defeats its purpose), there really are just the two options available; that leaves just one variable, the layout of the vital info, which I've altered to maximize the chances that the TOC will at least be marginally visible. That being said, what I was really looking for - as much in the interests of not having to ask you to make one minor change after another - was hints on how to edit the contents of the box. - --David 02:09, 12 May 2011 (EDT)

RE: pasted obits[edit]

Fair enough, and rather than rack my brains formulating a response, here's the one I sent Mischa moments ago re his query re the Neal Russo bio. you've partially answered the questions my own response posed. What remains, besides identifying the eight C & P pages (see below), is the question of whether it's one of you guys or I who remedies the situation. In the meantime, maybe you can just check out this message so we're all on the same page:

"RE: "I assume you did not just copy-and-paste"

Gee, Mischa, I sure hope you didn't put any money on that hunch. In fact, looking back over my recently added sports writer pages (or, more precisely, their respective biographical sections), about half - i.e. all but the briefest ones - are, by and large, copy & paste jobs, albeit sometimes highly edited ones (that is to say, purged of non-baseball-related material and occasionally rephrased to facilitate elisions). This quickly becomes apparent to anyone willing to check out the corresponding endnotes which supply links to the source articles in their entirety. The 'offending' bios would include Neal Russo, Harold Kaese, John Steadman, Dave Nightingale, Heywood Broun, James Enright, Bill Jenkinson and Charley Feeney). The only exceptions to this latter group - i.e. bios of at least moderate length which nonetheless feature my own uniquely lugubrious prose stylings - would be Les Biederman and Arnold Hano, the two writers with whose work I was already well acquainted through their Clemente connection.

As I indicated in my previous message, the sportswriter pages - outside of LB & AH - are purely incidental to my pet project of the moment (i.e. attaching links to some regularly featured Baseball Digest articles to the appropriate player pages) and not something on which I want to spend a whole lot of time. Re the Sportswriter pages themselves, my only real passion is providing examples - via links from Google news Archive and/or Google Books - of each writer's work. IOW, assuming the aforementioned C & P is indeed a no-no, as for fixing the offending entries, perhaps it would be best for either you or Philippe to apply your superior editorial acumen to the task. (As Philippe can no doubt attest by now, if there's one thing more torturous for me than writing itself, it's editing). While I clearly have zero emotional investment in this second-hand prose (the more 'merciless' the editing the better, as far as I'm concerned), I don't know that I have the wherewithal - neither time nor aptitude - to distill each of these leisurely entries into to its lean, mean, 2 or 3-sentence essence, if that's the prescribed remedy. Still, if you'd like me to take a shot, please advise me. Otherwise, I'll defer to the more experienced editorial hands, eagerly anticipating the result. Thenceforth, following your lead, I'll be fully prepared, when next this situation occurs, to 'do as the Romans do.' Thanks, M. - --David 15:59, 24 May 2011 (EDT)"

OK, Philippe, that's about the size of it. Thanks for the heads up, and for your attention to my response. Let me know, or consult with M, then let me know. Or, if you wish, bypass me entirely, go straight to those pages and work your magic; I know you've got the chops - --David 17:13, 24 May 2011 (EDT}

Originally, yes, and that's a members-only database at SABR (David Vincent being the last known administrator, at least according to BR). Versalles trail sweep[edit]

Hi, Philippe. Nice job doing trail sweep on the Zolio Versalles article apres my recent edits. I see from your User page you have been a very busy, dilligent, and helpful contributor at the Bullpen on many fronts. Perhaps you will find this link helpful, to the Wikipedia Manual of Style, which lays out standard form there vis-a-vis internally linking common terms, places, etc.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOS:LINK.

As you will see, it assumes a certain level of familiarity among users and thus discourages linking items that should meet a general user's grasp. Thus (in Bullpen terms) items not every average Baseball fan would be familiar with - like the Mexican League - would earn an internal link while the country Mexico would not. Similarly, every fan knows what a triple is, and thus it would not be linked, whereas other less straightforward offensive achievements - such as hitting for the cycle or attempting a safety steal of home - would merit them.

There are exceptions when warranted. For example, while the term triple would not normally be internally linked in a bio (since it is reasonable to assume an average baseball fan reading content at the Bullpen knows what they are) it would be internally linked the 1st time it appears in an article on slugging percentage or total bases, since triples are essential components of how those formulas are calculated.

I hope this helps. Good luck on the ever fewer items on your To-Do list. It's great to see such dedicated contributions here. Cheers. Brc.user100 06:52, 11 May 2012 (EDT)

  • 1973: Hollandais Stenzler (does that mean a Dutch guy named Stenzler?)
  • 1982: An American named Edwards
  • 1986: Pellacini

Also, I see an Olivier Dubaut mentioned. I wonder if it's the father of Nicolas Dubaut?

I wonder if the French baseball authorities have info on the 1989 European Championship online somewhere as well.

Perfect Games[edit]

No problem on creating a separate page for the minor league games. Those that were perfect games are also indicated as such on the minor league no-hitter pages with a (P) after the innings, but having all the perfectos together is easier for those that are only interested in them. --Cmcgill (talk) 08:43, 25 August 2014 (EDT)

Milwaukee Creams[edit]

I'm sure there are a few other cities like that. The question becomes, what should be considered the definitive source of minor league team names? The EoMiLB, Filichia, B-R? I'll add the Creams back into the appropriate pages. --Cmcgill (talk) 17:13, 13 January 2015 (EST)

Alphabetical Listing of players[edit]

Thanks Phillipe. I just wanted to make sure that everyone was categorized for their debut, birth and death dates. I also added many hundreds to the Single Game Careers category. I think there were only 9 in there when I started.

Next up is to go through the Minor League Managers category and add managerial records where needed. I know SABRMnLgs has been adding some info to the various pages. I've sent Jerry info on manager changes as I've found it in my minor league no-hitter research, and he's been working on this stuff for decades, I think. --Cmcgill (talk) 07:35, 25 February 2015 (EST)

I tried emailing the Belgian Baseball Federation to see whether some Belgian players are related and never heard back; it could be that no one there speaks English. OTOH, they would speak French so I was wondering if you could check with them. Among those I'm wondering about:

Is Albert De Lannoy related to Steven De Lannoy? Is Oswald Boermans related to Michel Boermans? And is either (or are both) related to Sam Boermans? Are Marcel De Saedeleer and/or Steven De Saedeleer related to Roger De Saedeleer? Is Marc Janssen related to Steve Janssen? Is John Peerens related to Johnny Peerens? Are Patrick Renard and Guy Renard related? Are Anthony and Ronald Tiliakos related? Are Gustaf Mertens and Nicky Mertens related? Are Tonny Verhaert and Robby Verhaert related?

Given the familial nature of baseball in some smaller baseball nations, I wouldn't be surprised if all of these came back as yes, but I also don't know how common these names are in Belgium. It's not as if every Rodriguez who played baseball in Cuba is related, though quite a few do have relatives in Cuban baseball. - --Mischa (talk) 11:03, 9 July 2015 (EDT)

Negro Leagues update[edit]

No problem with your proposal. I had originally added those tables because at the time they were not generally available to most users. I still don't trust Baseball-Reference on many things.

BB-Ref is still playing arbitrarily with the statistics, deciding inconsistently to ignore certain Negro Leagues data that do not precisely conform to what the White majors did (like having independent and associate teams that played against league teams without being included in league standings). The White majors never had any teams play like that, and BB-Ref ignores the fact that the Negro Leagues had to work under different rules, both social and economic, and could not always do exactly as the White majors did.

Thanks for all your work on the Negro League player/team project so far. Sorry my Negro League team project stalled with the Olympic run-up, European Cup and Olympics (and still adding bios for some of the qualifiers players and a few Olympians). Editing Pages[edit]

I tried to seek help regarding editing/expanding/creating articles on the What's Happening page a while ago, but never got any. Every time I expand or create an article, seemingly little things get changed. (Unless there's a certain way articles need to be formatted, then they wouldn't be little changes.) I looked around for a style guide, but didn't find one. Is there such a style guide, or do the way pages are written boil down to personal preference? There's an article that I edited about a week ago -- Joel Condreay -- and all the edits seem incredibly arbitrary. I have included a screenshot of said changes. I must admit, it's incredibly off-putting to put work into writing something only to have seemingly arbitrary changes made to it. Is there a standard by which all articles must be written? If so, I will again ask for help because I want to be a good contributor. (My writing style quite obviously differs from yours.) And I don't mean to sound rude, but I'm growing pretty frustrated.

What are the standards for making pages for college players?[edit]

I noticed some college players have actual BR pages but I think the rules say you can not make bullpen pages for them? I noticed a few guys I used to play with got pages now and I can provide a bit of information regarding the throwing and batting hands and birth dates and stuff if needed. Gothy (talk) 19:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

I hate to be a bother yet again[edit]

But I have a question regarding some of the Pre-MLB players. I noticed some of the teams in the National Association started off as independent teams but became notable once they joined the league so for example, this guy, George King played for the Rockford Forest Citys right before they joined the league so does this mean pages for guys like him aren't allowed or should they have their own section. Baseball was very looser and hard to track in that day but ultimately my goal is to try and organize the early and difficult parts of it. ````

Regarding what you said about SABR[edit]

Yea I would love to do that potentially but I'm not sure, doesn't that involve like having to travel all over to try and contact relatives of players and stuff? I'm not sure how much free time I have really to have if it comes to having to work on projects at a set time either like on deadlines and stuff, which is mostly why I just contribute here whenever I'm free. I would need to know more about it but I am definitely interested in the possibility of it. Gothy (talk) 18:12, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

I also have another question regarding Pre-MLB Players[edit]

So like this site and most other sources say, the National Association of Base Ball Players had over 300 clubs at one point, so there are a lot of players with just a first initial and a last name (so an example like J. Smith or something) and a ton of players who are only known by their last name. Is there a way I should organize them somehow? Like for example this guy, Higby played in MLB and was only known by a last name. How would we organize hundreds of players pages like that if they have a generic name? Like if theres upward of 100 players only known by a last name, would I have to name the pages like this: Smith (18xx blah blah ball club) and just insert the year and team they played for like that to tell them apart? Gothy (talk) 03:01, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Please comment on BR Bullpen:Featured Article Candidates/Arky Vaughan - Mischa (talk) 14:33, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

I feel bad for asking so many questions but I have another one[edit]

If I want to create pages for some NABBP (National Association of Base Ball Players) teams from the pre-mlb era, how do you want me to title them? Most of the sources back then called them the "Ballclub name of City name) like the Excelsior of Brooklyn, but the page for them on here is listed as the "Brooklyn Excelsiors" but the New York Knickerbockers page on here is listed like the other name like the Knickerbocker of New York on here. So should I do City, then team name like how all the teams do it now or should I do Ballclub of City name? Gothy (talk) 02:09, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Organizing pre-mlb players[edit]

Someone on here told me creating pages with such little info for pre-mlb players is a "waste of time" so I thought maybe we can make a page of every pre-mlb player and have little bio sections for the ones who we actually know stuff about, or something like that. They suggested maybe including the players in a roster section on the pages of the teams that they played for, but the issue I see with that is the fact that some of the teams full rosters are unknown, just working with mentions of a few guys I found in game recaps in papers, so I don't think that'd work. So maybe we can set up a list page with something similar to this type of layout:

Title: List of Pre-MLB Players

chart layout:

Player name

Birth/death date (if not known then just leave blank or write 'unknown')

Position (if not known then just leave blank or write 'unknown')

Team(s) played for (name of team as a clickable link to the page of the team they played for)

this is just my suggestion and I plan to wait before I make any big moves or anything, after last time.

Gothy (talk) 01:44, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

The full list of pre-mlb players[edit]

Been working on this for a while now but this is every pre-mlb player we were able to find. We can also include the teams that they played for and the years and all that but compiling the list of names in general in alphabetical order was exhausting so we'll do that another day. We went through old papers as well as a book called "The National Association of Base Ball Players, 1857-1870" to find all of them. Players with Unknown first names are listed at the top and they aren't in alphabetical order, but the rest are.

A super minty fresh clean idea[edit]

I finished the organized spreadsheet of pre-mlb players only to be very confused as to why these hundreds of players were only listed to play for the same 10 or so clubs. Well it turns out some of these things I found only covered certain teams, so that means there is hundreds of other ball clubs with players listed in various papers, so rather than compiling it as one giant list would we be able to just create a page of like all pre-mlb players from each club? An idea would be like a page called "List of Pre-MLB Players/New York Gothams", "List of Pre-MLB Players/Rockford Forest Citys", etc. Then just include all those pages in the Pre-MLB players category? I feel like it'd be easier to keep track of them all that way too because the alphabetized list of EVERY player was crazy. Cody n Nelli (talk) 02:25, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

I was thinking about something[edit]

Is there a way to make galleries in pages? I was thinking for less-notable Pre-MLB players who I have photos of, I can just add the pictures to an organized gallery at the bottom of the team page. Cody n Nelli (talk) 02:40, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Can you look into this?[edit]

Basically I was googling pictures of old players and supposedly I read in a book from like really recently that there are only 2 existing photos of Jim Creighton. However, I found this random ebay listing of someone claiming to have a 3rd photo of him. I am not sure if this is legit or not, but I must say the guy I'm the photo looks kind of similar to Creighton and plus the only 2 known pictures of him are kind of from the side so you can't see his whole face well but here you can see him looking forward. So can you get someone to look into it and see if it's for real? If so I think that's a new discovery. I haven't joined sabr yet since I plan to once all the chaos in my life tones down but you're a member of it I think. https://www.ebay.com/itm/134852525919?hash=item1f65d63f5f:g:JBkAAOSw0bZle1t8&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0J%2F0GoiMvrf%2F4kocpBhlnLOe3IXFQznJ%2FbMKZu2UT%2Bq8Wi2Xt4eojFzVsq4JvZoC6Vj4Fj7JmiDgyRRUqrqqvTkgKtnWm3RGr2yKCh5aSYfAe%2FuSpocuNxaRE%2BlrBJ06cDylrTK%2F94UWNjfK%2BUfoB5jusnfP1IXKpgL2gneAJxyuySuNu1dnGbTkztw%2BjeTj2rUDp2uhHcGF%2F7g0%2FS1qq%2BZF4MmZAp6LNx47fJg8CNgiwsyPNCyy10cKvsNhMtX0pL5E9jxeWPuJk9k6zhoTIP8%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR9aAl7KoYw

Just to let you know[edit]

I am reaching the end of all the pre-mlb players I am adding, unless and until I discover more. I'm not entirely dont but pretty close with the process of discovering them and adding them to the pre-mlb rosters sections on pages. I will probably make more pages of some guys who I can find a decent amount of biographical information on a bit too. I am going to change my focus to adding more about college baseball, but I wanted an opinion on how I should start on that. I want to do year-by-year pages so that I can include rosters since some lesser-known colleges such as my own (Penn State Wilkes-Barre) players can get some form of recognition since they aren't allowed to have pages on the bullpen. For mine, I added a year-by-year roster but I feel like updating a ton of college pages to add rosters yearly would be tough. The Goth Kids (talk) 15:14, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

I guess, but why does br even include them in actual pages then? They literally have pages of guys i played with in little league who are about as notable as any McDonalds employee The Goth Kids (talk) 15:46, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

I don't mean writing full-on bios on them. I mean maybe if we did a page for seasons for historical documentation, then there could just be a roster section at the bottom. I did this last month and Jeff didn't seem to take issue to it other than that I was choosing random years for random colleges to add and he said I should finish my pre-mlb players thing first and to have an idea first because otherwise it's like "painting with a shotgun" as he said. Also doesn't the bullpen quite literally have tons of pages on random 3rd world European country 14 year olds who played in random tournaments? The Goth Kids (talk) 16:02, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

How am I supposed to link to a subpage from a different Bullpen page? -Umbreon9 (talk) 01:18, 10 March 2024 (UTC) -Also, how can I color text?

For the Roger Clemens chart how can I highlight the best number for a column in gold? -Umbreon9 (talk) 00:30, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
