Outfielder Nicky Mertens debuted in the Belgian First Division with the 2003 Port of Antwerp Greys, hitting .203/.365/.237. He was 19 for 57 with 9 walks in 2004 and batted .260/.383/.271 in '05. In 2006, he hit .340/.433/.420 and .351/.437/.532 in 2007. In 2008, he hit .194/.402/.222. He batted .278/.350/.278 for the Greys in the 2008 European Cup in Grosseto. With the Belgian national team for the 2008 European Championship Qualifiers, Nicky batted .308/.471/.538 as their starting left fielder to help them win a spot at the 2010 European Championship.

In '09, Mertens moved to the Hoboken Pioneers and hit .245/.368/.287. For the fifth straight season, he was on the Belgian Series winner.
