Biographical Information[edit]

Ernie Hickman was a pitcher who played for the Kansas City Cowboys of the Union Association in June and July of 1884. He had a 4-13 record on the mound with a 4.52 ERA and fanned 68 batters. Hickman apparently suffered from really bad mental illness and on November 19, 1891, he told his wife, Anna Varley "now we can die together," and shot her and then himself. Anna managed to survive for a few hours, despite having been shot in the eyeball and promised to forgive Ernie, not knowing that he was dead. She died a few hours later. It is said that Hickman was under constant doctor care in his final days because of his condition.
