This is a feature that has existed since the creation of the bullpen. A similar feature exists in wikipedia. I have no idea what the source code is or where you would find it, but it's understandable why it's protected, given the link is on the main page. I was not involved in the design of the main page and have only limited technical knowledge. I provided you earlier with the name of the person at Sports Reference who deals with such issues.
