Summer Collegiate League[edit]

Those pages were badly out of date as nobody is updating them. I will when I get the chance. There is no point in having out of date information. Browsers will look elsewhere for that information if ours is badly out of date. - --SwatCat71 (talk) 13:20 7th April 2016

HSV Zwijndrecht[edit]

Mischa, HSV Zwijndrecht's Hoofdklasse experience seems to be limited to the women's softball hoofdklasse. Their main claim to fame is that to a couple of noteworthy baseball players, it will always be the club they played as a 10 year old boy and so on. To (most) players growing up in the Netherlands, school may be the place where they teach lots of useful things, but not the place where baseball is taught, there are clubs for that.

Change of Eerste klasse will be a lot of work, the hybrid league was split up in a regular league Eerste Klasse and the Rookie League. However, what's now Eerste klasse will be called the "Overgangsklasse" (transition league) next year and what's now the Tweede Klasse will be the Eerste Klasse next year (and 3rd will be 2nd, 4th will be 3rd,...). That means that the Eerste Klasse will no longer indicate part of the (semi-)pro baseball levels. It may need a bit of discussion and planning before anybody could start without making a complete mess of whole article, what's now in it should be preserved, but in a way which makes clear that that is the way it used to be... And when and why it changed...

Help[edit]

Hi Mischa...I don't know if this is the correct way to comunicate with you. Please let me know.. Jorge

BBWAA[edit]

Hey, didn't mean to step on your edits to the BBWAA page... I was just noticing the name was misspelled, so I redirected the one without the apostrophe to the one with the apostrophe... right when you were creating the one with the apostrophe to redirect to the other! Odd. Should be fine the way it is now, though. Thanks for all your contributions to this (I think I'll have to make a login). 12.111.90.246 13:42, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

Dick Sisler[edit]

I am with you two guys on Dick Sisler...we know its not the Major League one. It's probably a young man named Dick Sisler that never made it up the ladder. I don't have any other source on the Rookie League to work with. I should have also caught the President, Thomas J. Staffel, that was an error on my part. The Encyclopedia is very good at name spelling errors...could be that. Or could be a Richard?--Dugout 23:33, 19 August 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: What does this new message mean exactly? I know we are not to copy from other sites. Any fool knows that. However this Template:lfeq:Dugout confuses me. Can you explain?--Dugout 16:47, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

Western League[edit]

Mischa, I ran thru 1899 on the player name (link) still came up with several that will not come up. The names with the initials are that way, when I can locate them, in the source books. You get time you might give it a hit but I re-checked names about everyway possible. --Dugout 15:10, 19 October 2006 (EDT)

One easy way to check for names is on the main part of the baseball-reference site. For instance, type in "Da Stea" in the search section and you find that "Daniel Stearns" is "Ecky Stearns". It's not hard work. I'm going through 1887 now. I still have lots of work to do on the PONY League pages you did and some others and have my own projects, so might do a year per day or so. - --Mischa 17:31, 19 October 2006 (EDT)

Mischa, I see on your page you say you need pages for the Western League. Older Class "A" 1902-37, Newer Class "A" 1947-58. Also an older Class "D" 1939-41. I have given the league a test study. What do you desire? Let me know.--Dugout 16:28, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

What I had put on my user page was my plan to create pages for every Western League team, which has been in process. I have information, but haven't had time to enter it (too many projects, not enough time). I had not planned on doing any page for the WL per se. One handy reference if you need it is Madden and Stewart's book "The Western League" - it contains yearly standings, league leaders, managers, etc. - --Mischa 16:56, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

Mischa, I have access to that book, that is how I became interested in the project. Both of the authors are Indianapolis men. It will be lengthy if I do it right. I think my plan would be to treat this league as I have the others as far as layout, etc. are concerned. If this is o.k. with you, I will get my sources together. There seem to be a few on this league, that are reliable. When I get my first two years together, which I will do in the sandbox that MichaelEng has provided me with, I would like for you to critique them, I can stay with that pattern and stay out of the way. I do not intend to work at my usual helter-skelter pace on these pages, but due to the lack of some info, here and there, it is going to make for more searching and I can see where this could take a bit of time. Let me know if we are o.k. to go and I will start getting things compiled. Thanks for your time--68.51.71.149 21:50, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

Sounds good to me. I can't guarantee how quickly I might check it out due to Simchat Torah, Shemini Atzeret, work, house problems (plumbing and roof), etc. but I will take a look when I get the time - --Mischa 09:05, 13 October 2006 (EDT)

Logging in[edit]

Mischa, I have a tough time staying logged in. Is that due to when you switch pages or to transfer copy? --Dugout 21:56, 12 October 2006 (EDT) -- Mischa, Please tell me when I have been disrespectful to anyone on this site? --Dugout 15:45, 9 October 2006 (EDT)

About your comment about quotes, I can see a time when the quote should be at the bottom, and a time when it should at the top. If it's a quote that's merely interesting (such as one of Casey Stengel's funny quips), then it should be at the bottom. I've done some of that. But if a quote really seems to define a player, then it should be at the top - like quotes at the start of book chapters. For instance, I put the Happy Felsch quote at the top because it just seemed appropriate up there. - Randy 9:26 EST 7/25/06

Makes sense to me. I'd like consistency but I feel that this is a good differentiation. I've also sprinkled them throughout an article at times (as in the recent Easler one), yet another way of going about it. What do other admin think? Should there be a formal policy or should posters do what they feel is most appropriate? - --Mischa 21:29, 25 July 2006 (EDT)

Quotes should be wherever they make sense. Personally, I think its usually sprikled in, but different articles need different things. --Just me 23:15, 25 July 2006 (EDT)

Now wait a sec, Mischa. I don't see why it is inappropriate to say that Roger Maris is the single-season record-holder for home runs without benefit of steroids. All of the players who have hit over 61 home runs have been strongly implicated with steroids. - Randy 7/20/06

There's something called innocent until proven guilty in American law. I know it doesn't fit with media tendencies but those are the rules and I don't think it's appropriate to assume guilt. - --Mischa 17:47, 20 July 2006 (EDT)

Yes, but this isn't in an article about Bonds, Sosa, or McGwire, it's in an article about Roger Maris, seeking to point up his accomplishment. - Randy 7/20/06, 17:49

It's still assuming guilt by other parties. You shouldn't defame others implicitly or explicitly, even on pages that are not their own. - --Mischa 17:54, 20 July 2006 (EDT)

Thanks for getting the non-neutral on Bonds. It is nice to see this site grow in the right way. -Scott

Thanks for all the kind wishes. Miriam is taking her family to the airport now, which is why I got away from unpacking gifts/her boxes and being a disgustingly cute newlywed for a while. I don't think there are any wedding pictures online yet, though I know a lot of our friends had digital cameras on hand and got some good shots. I'll try to share some pics as they become available. - --Mischa 08:05, 31 May 2006 (EDT)

Deadball era[edit]

What would you think if I started a new article called "Second Deadball Era" or some similar title to describe the years from 1964-72? The article on the "Deadball era", while very nice, focuses on the 1901-19 era exclusively. There really isn't a standard name for the 1964-72 era, partly because when it occurred fans weren't really aware it was happening.

Mischa, Could you put me on to a source for the 1949, 50, & 51, Baseball Guide. I am really interested in doing the Ohio-Indiana league page, but the info that I have is just not enough to do it correctly. Let me know, thanks, dugout 1:10pm Aug 28 2006 (EST)

Mischa, Thanks for your quick answer, The library at the U of Notre Dame has some Baseball Guide info also on those years and is sending me some copies. dugout 5:50pm Aug 28 2006 (est)

Also, I forgot to point out in my prior email - the Hall of Fame will mail you copies of Spalding Guide or Baseball Guide data if you ask. - --Mischa 18:01, 28 August 2006 (EDT)

Uniform numbers?[edit]

You added a great deal of wonderful information about the Osceola Astros, and I thank you for that. Does any of your reference material list the uniform numbers of the players for the 1986-1989 time period? I have no trouble finding the statistics for the players, but I haven't seen any place that lists uniform numbers. 161.40.22.50 10:22, 11 September 2006 (EDT)

Awww, Mischa, thanks for your note. Yeah, I've been too lazy to do what you've suggested, but I guess I should. - Randy 21:58 12 September 2006 (EDT)

1941 Braves, and pictures[edit]

Re:editing[edit]

About your comment on Melvin Dorta, the reason you can't keep up with the editing is that you're the one who usually does it. I, for example, get caught up in adding info and don't help edit as much as I should. --Just me 21:48, 11 November 2006 (EST)

I probably could do more editing too. I'm just so caught up in my own projects. I doubt anyone wants to do editing only - --Mischa 21:51, 11 November 2006 (EST)

Still can't figure out how to add categories. If you could add agent to stan royer it would be appreciated. I REALLY have to go this time! I'm addicted.

Mischa, I want to apologize for the Charley/Curtis Pride incident. I think I may have jumped to conclusions, during a radio broadcast of the game. I'm sorry. Just give me a chance to help the site, and with a little guidance I can get better. -- David -- 9:15 CST, 7 Feb. 2007

You've done a good job here so far. Just make sure to verify information from reliable sources before adding it (and even then we've put some incorrect stuff in) - having heard it on the radio wouldn't seem reliable to me. Heck, the radio plays Sean Hannity and other BSers like that. - --Mischa 12:21, 7 February 2007 (EST)

Actually, Eric Nadel is a reliable source, I always believed Charley was Curtis' Dad since one set of Strat-o-matic cards I bought had Curtis Pride's card in it. I probably twisted his words around, and heard what I wanted to hear, instead of what was said. Eric Nadel should never be compared to JERKS like Hannity & O'Riley! -- David -- 11:32 CST, 7 Feb. 2007

I'm not familiar with Nadel's work; I know the Pirates broadcasters. Glad to hear you have such good baseball commentators down there. - --Mischa 12:34, 7 February 2007 (EST)

Bob Thurman article[edit]

Hi Mischa. Thanks for your comments. I enjoyed working on the article. I actually knew about the header information, but I forgot — sorry. (It was my first article.) I wrote it for the English Wikipedia, but since I've "borrowed" other material from here, I thought it was only fair that I make a contribution when I could. --Rbraunwa 15:43, 3 January 2007 (EST)

Jackson Melian article[edit]

I don't know if this site aspires to only stats, but I think info on Melian's personal life could be added. It explains why he dropped off the radar. Both of his parents died in a car crash when he was 19 or 20. Having to deal with that tragedy explains a lot for how his career has struggled.

The article authors were probably unaware of it. I'll add in the information - thanks for notifying us. - --Mischa 12:43, 9 January 2007 (EST)

Thanks for the help.[edit]

Thank you for fixing the errors on the Toledo Mud Hens edit I did.

I read you profile. I think it is pretty funny you are a social worker in PGH. I was a social worker in Toledo and have recently moved to PGH to attend Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

I think the Pirates are going to break .500 this year.

Thanks again, Swerth

Jim Tobin[edit]

Thanks for your improvements, Mischa. --Rbraunwa 17:33, 29 January 2007 (EST)

No problem. Glad to lend a hand. Thanks for the contributions. - --Mischa 20:11, 29 January 2007 (EST)

Cuban Stats[edit]

I got the leaders from http://www.radiococo.cu/guia/guia.htm and standings from http://www.radiococo.cu/43hist/pos83.htm. I haven't been able to find season level stats but the Guía Digital 2005-06 has career stats including fielding.

Also appending (Cuba) to players might not be the way to go as there were many players with similar names. For instance re: Juan Castro there were/are Juan Castro, Juan Castro Carrillo, and Juan Castro García, and Juan Castro Ojeda. So sort of system needs to be devised. --MichaelEng (talk) 19:34, 11 February 2007 (EST)

That's odd. If you still want the PDFs I will send then to you. Also, do you have Admin's email address and was I supposed to contact you regarding NPB fielding stats? --MichaelEng (talk) 16:49, 25 March 2007 (EDT)
I forgot that I have the stats in a spreadsheet, I send you that instead. --MichaelEng (talk) 18:03, 25 March 2007 (EDT)

Mischa, I don't know if you have this or want it, but there is a Pirates Encyclopedia on eBay. --Jeff 09:51, 15 February 2007 (EST)

Editing question[edit]

Thank you for all of your help. I have a question for you. How do I go about loading team logos onto the pages I edit? Are logos on team websites and league sites public domain? What is the process for verifying and loading team and league logos? --Swerth 02:34, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

If you've started the Ronovsky page already, have at it.  :) -Chisoxfan 21:12, 15 March 2007 (EDT)

Sterling Slaughter and the quotation[edit]

Wait a sec about the quotation (you wrote about it on my page). First of all, there's the concept of fair use. I didn't copy an article, it was just a quote. It was a brief quote. As you know, one is permitted to quote briefly from other people's work. Secondly, this wasn't something they composed - it was something Slaughter himself said. They didn't compose it. It's not their work. They merely quoted Slaughter, which is exactly what I did. If Sean wants to delete the quote, that's OK with me, but I doubt it's truly necessary. If that website wants credit for the quote (I don't rememeber where I found it), I don't oppose that. But I disagree that there was anything inappropriate here. Anyway, if that's Sean's position, that's ok with me - I will keep it in mind even for short quotes. It's his right to decide. Along those lines, I notice that Willie Mays is referred to as the "Say Hey" kid, because he said that. I suppose now we'll have to remove that quote? You see my point, of course. What's sauce for Sterling Slaughter is sauce for Willie Mays - Randy 22:28 20 March 2007 (EDT)

If it was an interview they conducted with Slaughter, there might be an issue. I don't know the legal status and if they are that indignant about it, I say it's best to remove it. We should always err on the side of caution when it comes to possible copyright violations. - --Mischa 13:35, 21 March 2007 (EDT)

Misinformation alert[edit]

Hi. I am an administrator at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wknight94) and am wondering about the status of User:Ron liebman. From his talk page here, I see that he is engaging in the same behavior here as he is at Wikipedia, i.e. tweaking players' dates of birth without providing any references. Has he provided any references to you behind the scenes? Is there any legitimacy to his research? The changes that we have removed at Wikipedia are still in place here so I assume either no one has noticed or he has become a trusted source. Other accounts almost certainly used by the same person:

Any help you can provide is appreciated. I have also registered my e-mail address here if you prefer to use that. Thank you and regards. —Wknight94 (talk) 23:52, 11 April 2007 (EDT)

Ron Liebman is a real baseball researcher who has worked with SABR. He said that he has submitted his research to the SABR Biographical Committee and I'm waiting for an official word about the changes before we make them widespread here. The B-R administrator, Sean Forman, feels that Mr. Liebman is a reliable source. Hope that helps. - --Mischa 08:24, 12 April 2007 (EDT)
It does help, thanks. Since you to have sysop rights here, you might want to be aware that one or more of the accounts I listed have also engaged in other unfortunate behavior such as blanking relevant pages [1], using rude inflammatory edit summaries [2], and declaring himself to be so famous that he is sometimes confused with a well-known actor [3] - all of course with no verification and in a belligerent edit-warring manner [4]. He has even branched out to waging similar battles over non-baseball players such as Joy Behar [5] and Elisabeth Hasselbeck [6]. As for the reliability of his baseball data, I may contact Mr. Forman for details. Thanks again. —Wknight94 (talk) 12:53, 12 April 2007 (EDT)
Now we have Irene Liebman (his wife?) aiding Mr. Liebman in his attempt to compare himself to the actor [7]. Sorry to belabor the point but it's getting very hard to take his research claims seriously with these antics. —Wknight94 (talk) 18:58, 12 April 2007 (EDT)

Update from Wikipedia: see here for the latest batch of reverts from Mr. Liebman (note the nice language: "This is just plain stupid", "Please cut the crap immediately! You obvioucly (sic) have a serious problem.", "This is sad.", "Straighten yourself out.") Note he still gives almost no details on how anyone can verify any of his changes. I just fixed two articles here where his "research" even conflicted with photographs of the people's gravestones! If you've found out any more details, feel free to respond and/or send an e-mail. Thanks. —Wknight94 (talk) 21:46, 14 April 2007 (EDT)

PS - I tried to summarize my opinion in this message to Mr. Liebman. He will likely be banned from Wikipedia soon. —Wknight94 (talk) 08:39, 15 April 2007 (EDT)

Hello,

In response to your Roy Majtyka date - change inquiry, my source was a Spartanburg Phillies team baseball card from the late 80s/early 90s.

The Minor League Register has January 1 also. --Jeff 21:42, 17 April 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for the Chase Riddle bio. Its great to know more about all these minor league managers t=han just where they managed. --Jeff 18:07, 22 April 2007 (EDT)

Liebman[edit]

This is Ron Liebman. A couple of the guys at Wikipedia have been trying to make trouble for me. They did not want to accept by birthdates because they were contrary to those on a majority of websites and publicateions (Of course, this is so - I am trying to correct wrong data on the basis of internet data (not available before) and the work of other baseball researchers. They also were reluctant to accept non-biographical statistical changes for me. They were blocking me from entries at times, harassing users who tried similar stats (such as consecutive game or consecutive achievement streaks), they insulted me, and it sounded that they were ready to send me to jail. I don't think that I will ever make Wikipedia entries anytime soon- if so, I won't do it under my own name. Also, the over-the -hill Bill Carle (Bio Committee head since 1988) is slow to acdcept my changes - though a few will be in the March-April 2007 Newsletter. Please ignore those troublcmakers Weetahna dn WkKnight of Wickepedia. They are up to no good. I hope you use my changes. If not, I may have to go to my own website (I don't have one now) to reports changes in bio data - particularly birthdates. I hope to start to see some of my chanfges (whether Bill Carle uses them or not!) on baseballreference.com. If you wish to e-mail me, I am ronlisbman.stats@yahoo.com. I am digusted with the regular Wikipedia (and to some degree with the past-his-prime Bill Carle). I hope that you guys are sensible and that you use my changes. I am concentrating on baseball statistical research right now - I likely won't have biographical research (especially birthdates) for a while. Meanwhile, you haven't even corrected Chappas' height on baseballreference.com ! I will suggest some changes regarding rate stats and awards later onh. If you revert my bio changes, I will quit helping your website. Good night, from Ron Liebman

From how the Wikipedia discussion reads, you repeatedly make changes without citing evidence and they got upset with it. Additionally, you would pick and choose which data to go by. We here trust the work of the SABR Biographical Committee, which ensures that the data is accurate before it sends it out, confirming from multiple sources and not just a tidbit they found on the internet or a 19th century birth certificate. The SABR Biographical Committee is the source we trust for our information. Bill Carle is also not over-the-hill or whatever - he's a methodological researcher who wants to make sure he has the correct information. He has confirmed some of what you have added but I don't think we should put it here until it has been confirmed. - --Mischa 17:36, 25 April 2007 (EDT)

-From Ron Liebman- I am disappointed in your sudden hostility regarding my "carefully researched changes" and your listening to the nonsense of Wahkeenah and Wknight of regular Wikipedia. Besides the geneological study on Sam Rice (which has proven reliable in other instances), there is no datas forRice except his own word. Bender had a birth certificate (5/3/1883), newspaper obits, and Facts on File (Which is a reliable source for data then available. SABr (though evidentally not the Biographical Committee) recognized the 1883 birthyear and named him SABR Centennial Celebrity of 1983. Bill Carle has definitely seen better days. If these items were submitted by Rich Malatzky or Peter Morris. Unless you keep my changes on Bender and Sam Rice (as well as keeping my other ones in place, regardless of whether Bill Carle uses them or not), I will never contribute to Bullpen again - ever! I suggest that you have Sean Forman (who seemed amicable when I met him at a couple of SABR meetings) contact me, and maybe we can reach asatisfactory accord. I don't have to take this nonsense (It became a circus with the regular Wiki, which I have stopped contributing to already). Please tell Sean Forman to contact me if you want my help in the future. Sincerely, Ron Liebman 4/27/2006 3:05 PM.

Just so you know, Mr. Liebman has apparently continued to insert his changes into articles on Wikipedia despite being banned, via the use of numerous sockpuppets and public IP addresses from the NY library system. Please see this link. -63.149.9.38 15:00, 16 May 2007 (EDT)

Re: National teams[edit]

I would say we have should categories for all five levels of international competetion:

 • Senior Men: Category:COUNTRY NAME national team players
 • Senior Women: Category:COUNTRY NAME women's national team players
 • Under-23 (university/college): Category:COUNTRY NAME under-23 national team players
 • Junior: Category:COUNTRY NAME junior national team players
 • Youth: Category:COUNTRY NAME youth national team players

However, only senior men and women would automatically gain notability; all others would need other qualifiers, such as professional player, etc. So Jeff Flaig isn't notable because he played for a national team, but because he was a minor league player. On the other hand Mel Gregory is due to her playing in the 2006 WBWC.

Additionally, see this page for national team templates with flags which make putting national teams in tables easier; not in text since they all have flags. They are replacements for the ISOCODE templates (such as Aruba Aruba; ABW) which only link to the nation, and are being replaced with flagcountry templates. Note, I haven't created the junior or youth national team pages yet, but their format would be:

To link to the Cuba under-23 national baseball team with a flag before the name, the format would be CUBuntf producing something similar to this Cuba. --MichaelEng (talk) 14:12, 18 May 2007 (EDT) 12.199.96.253 17:05, 30 May 2007 (EDT)

Re: Honkbal Week, World Port Tournament, etc.
An easy way to resolve this is to say that these tournaments aren't really "international" in the sense they aren't sponsored by the IBAF or one of its continental confederations. By the way the names of the categories should be in lower case (except for the country's name since they aren't proper nouns) and the nationality adjective should not be used for simplicity's sake (and avoids problems such as Chinese Taipei versus Taiwan). --MichaelEng (talk) 14:17, 31 May 2007 (EDT)

Liebman again[edit]

Mischa your actions are sad. I thoguht and hoped this matter of the birthdates was settled a month ago. Sean said he would accept them if I gave suitable documentation. Apparently I did because he accepted them. Then I continued to contribute to Bullpen. If I say stronger stuff, you will accuse me of slander - which you have already. Unless you guys accept the birthdates, I am through with Bullpen. Period!! I hope this is straightened out now - not in St.Louis or never!! (comments by Ron Liebman at 5 PM 5/30/2007).

Ron, the reason your "contributions" have been rejected is because an internet posting in the 21st Century is not valid proof of Sam Rice's birthday. You've been shown to be wrong numerous times in the past - ex. Pie Traynor being the last Pirate infielder with 200 hits - so we can hardly consider you a foolproof researcher. It is the policy here to use only substantiated biographical sources like the SABR Biographical Committee. Those of your changes which they have substantiated, we accept. Otherwise, we reject them. This is the same reason wikipedia kept rejecting your changes. - --Mischa 17:26, 30 May 2007 (EDT) This is it until you revert Bender, Sam Rice, and Stengel unless Sean intervenes to do so. (Regarding Traynor, that was a trivia question at a SABR contest run by Ed Luteran and if it is wrong it is because I didn't check it - as I should have). The birthdates I have explored more thoroughly. The fact that you reverted those 3 guys at end of April - and then did it again at end of May (I kept checking the birthdates) is a sad manifestation and shows you have some sort of personality or character defect. It is sad!!! Ron Liebman, 2:25PM on May 31, 2007.

Re:Women's national team players pages[edit]

They are stub articles. Hopefully, now some more content could be added to them (additionally. They didn't show up on the recent changes because I was trying out an upload script; it didn't work out like I planned, the category table didn't update, so I had to null edit all of the pages. I'm not going to use that method to add new content pages. The link to "non-existent" locale pages is due to the fact that I used the full name of the state in the template (e.g. Maine vs. ME) so that if we ever want to add more granulty to the "Born in Country" all that is needed is a change in a single template rather that 200-odd pages. I'll go ahead and created the appropriate redirects. The "non-existent" categories were either part of the template "Born in" (I'm thinking about changing it to "YEAR births") or part of stub-sorting (adding more specific stub types such as "Minor league team stub", "Major league team season stub" etc.) which would relieve some of the clutter in the 3200+ article stub category. It would also link related pages so a user with specific knowledge could see which pages need information more easily (lets say on the Negro Leagues, there could be a Negro League team stubs, Negro League player stubs, etc.). --MichaelEng (talk) 19:33, 11 June 2007 (EDT)

Re:Category names, stubs[edit]

Should the categories be named like this though? The categories aren't titles, they are sentence fragments and should be written as such with only proper nouns capitalized, just like articles. They should also be similar to the main article of the category (every category should have one, for national teams it would be "X national baseball team" or "List of X national team baseball players") and avoid abbreviations, see USA. Keeping the status quo just for the sake of it is not a very compelling argument.

With respect to naming the categories using the nation's name rather that the adjective form, it solves some problems with multi-national countries, countries with multiple adjective forms, and countries that compete under different names. Regarding the stubs, I don't think people or going on the site to Special:Wanted pages, looking for their page and then adding content. More than likely they are going to use a search engine to look for whatever, see the link on a page, click on it, and then see that there is nothing and add their info or question. Anyway, by querying the database, you (possibly as a bureaucrat, but definitely the Admin) can gather the information you desire. The same system was used to create the old Most Wanted page. --MichaelEng (talk) 18:14, 16 June 2007 (EDT)

Fergy Malone[edit]

Mischa, did you mean to make the change for Fergy Malone that you did? I wrote an article, and you reverted it back to the previous status, which was nothing at all. I don't see that there was anything that I wrote that was improper, so I'm wondering if it was a mistake. - Randy 22:40, 20 June 2007 (EDT)

Bill Burns[edit]

The information that you put back in there is unsourced. Do you have some references? That aside, the text I used on Wiki is also the same text I used here. I'm not saying the information in there isn't good. I'm simply saying that it isn't sourced and the version I put in was. Baseball guy 20:42, 4 July 2007 (EDT)

Dugout[edit]

Mischa: Did you get my e-mail on the vandals and the missing 1928 Texas Valley League info.--Dugout 10:07, 15 July 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: If I reverted any edits back that you changed it would have been unintentional on my part. I was merely trying to see what the edits were and possibly clicked off the wrong button. Sorry, I will not revert yours or any other good source edits if they are made. I just like to know what they were.--Dugout 20:40, 2 July 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: I put a message on the Top 20 HR page. Take a look. --Dugout 13:21, 25 June 2007 (EDT)

Mischa:Should I start putting the state into all new high schools? Like the Bethel, CT and Antioch, CA to avoid confusion?--Biggtone23 19:49, 14 June 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: The google address to my user:dugout page re-appeared this afternoon. I appreciate your help in this matter and thank you. I sent out an e-mail to my compatriots that they can enter as before and am sure they will all be appreciative. Thanks again. --Dugout 21:05, 7 June 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: The google access to my User:Dugout page has gotten fouled up. Up until a few days ago my compatriots could reach my completed projects page by typing into the google bar, (user br bullpen dugout), and it directed them to the User:Dugout info on the listing. They could then click that and it would take them right to the completed Bullpen projects list. When this is done now it puts out the web page cannot be found message and directs whomever to a bravesjournal.com sight...which is not good. Can you correct this problem. If not, can you put this Completed Projects Page on line so that it can be reached through Google? This is important to me and I will appreciate any help you can give me. Please let me know. --Dugout 13:31, 7 June 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: To make it simple this is the question. If a team is listed in the cities represented for a certain year in black is that team to be listed black in the teams column for that particular year? --Dugout 09:18, 5 June 2007 (EDT)

No. You should link to the team (whether or not its page exists yet). - --Mischa 09:50, 5 June 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: In the Nebraska League (1928-1938) The Beatrice Blues from (1932-38) under cities represented are shown to be black not blue. I had them in blue as that is the way they came up. I changed them to black when checking the teams against the cities represented list. Which is correct? This occurs often in the different leagues. If they show black on the cities represented list are we to make them black or leave them whatever they come up as...blue or red? --Dugout 22:58, 4 June 2007 (EDT)

They were in black because in the cities represented list, a team is linked to only once. As the Beatrice Blues were linked to under 1928, it would be redundant to have a second link later in the line for the 1932-1938 edition. In a separate table, though, it makes sense to link to the team each time. - --Mischa 08:05, 5 June 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: I finally got it together about the stats for 1882 and think I learned a lot about the Bull-Pen stats and how they can be put together. Thanks for your guiding me through to the results. I am very pleased with your cooperation. --Dugout 21:48, 27 May 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: I located the teams and team stats and standings but No managers or any player names or stats. Did I go to the right page? --Dugout 18:12, 27 May 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: Could you link up the top 20 All Time page to the proper category for me. I have never had this experience and I don't want to mess something up. Thanks--Dugout 20:12, 20 May 2007 (EDT)

Mischa: Sent you an e-mail--Dugout 18:19, 16 May 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for catching the Handicapped Players thing. ----

Mischa: There seems to be a discrepancy in the Bull-Pens Cities represented and the Encyclopedia lising with the Durango Laguna and Torreon, Coahuila names for 1957, You may want to look at it.--Dugout 14:18, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

Not sure, Mischa, why you deleted my mention of Lou Brock's being an ordained Christian minister. It is very much a part of his "life after baseball" in the St. Louis area and the short mention was very much in proportion to the rest of Brock's biographical information given on that page. See my talk page for a discussion on players' religious convictions and when I believe they are appropriate to include in their bio pages. Bascially, when a player becomes a public religious leader I believe that may be notewothy enough for a passing mention. Aspall 11:58, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

See my note on your talk page - I think any religious conviction information is appropriate. I had rolled back the Brock page because a couple links had been removed and hadn't noticed the accompanying change about his being a minister until afterwards. - --Mischa 12:06, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

OK, Mischa, I accept your explanation. I did delete some links because they were dead links. If you want these retained in the hope of articles being written in the future that's fine. I won't delete dead links any more. Aspall 12:17, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

I don't think the problem is necessary deleting dead links, but links to awards, schools, teams or players should be kept in hopes of future articles. For one of the Brock awards, the article already existed under a different name, so I just redirected it. - --Mischa 12:20, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

That's what I meant by "dead links." I do see your point and I agree. Aspall 12:26, 6 April 2007 (EDT)

Thanks Mischa: I am very much in the dark on how to do what is wanted. Does that box pop up when I enter the file path he gave me? Any direction you can give me here is appreciated.--Dugout 21:11, 25 March 2007 (EDT)

Minnesota-Wisconsin League note: The lead paragraph on the MW league class & dates do not match what is in the Minor League Encyclopedia. Check it out if you will. --Dugout 15:29, 13 February 2007 (EST)

Missouri Valley League Note:

Missouri Valley League: The Encyclopedia lists the league as a class D in 1902-03 and class C in 1904-05. The lead-in did not read this way and needs to be looked at. It makes the cities represented a little crazy and I don't think it may be as correct as it should be. I made a couple lead-in changes then quit as I am not quite sure what is wanted. It needs to be looked at.--Dugout 18:56, 4 February 2007 (EST)

I'll try to check it out today. Thanks for the notice. - --Mischa 13:18, 5 February 2007 (EST)

Georgia-Alabama League: Thanks for the corrections. For the record the names are listed in the Encyclopedia as Walt and Thompson. There are several such as these thru-out their book.--Dugout 14:50, 2 February 2007 (EST)

Yeah, I've found that in several sources where they list full names or misspelled names. It's easy to correct the well-known major leaguers but for minor league veterans, we just have to hope we catch them as time goes by. - --Mischa 13:30, 4 February 2007 (EST)

Central League[edit]

MISCHA, sent you an e-mail about Central League. Let me know if what I am doing is O.K.--Dugout 15:48, 2 November 2006 (EST)

Mischa, question, with all due respect, what is your reasoning in making individual team pages as you have stated? We run a league page thru 3 different centuries that could have been divided in any number of eras, and I will add that it far exceeded its KB capacity. Now we will not put the same team on the same page just because they have changed their nickname. Again...what is the answer here? Please let me know. Thanks--Dugout 13:32, 5 November 2006 (EST)

First off, it's not my decision. It's been the way the BR Bullpen has been doing things for well over a year. I really don't understand why you think it's odd to have all information about a league on one page and information about two different teams based in the same city on two different pages. It seems pretty straight-forward to me. What after all, do the Altoona Engineers and Altoona Curve have to do with one another beside being based in Altoona? - --Mischa 13:49, 5 November 2006 (EST)

Mischa, You answered the question, it's not your decision. I will get an answer elsewhere. I have no quarrall with you so please do not take this personal. I have no problem with putting league info on one page. I do have a problem with overloading a 32KB limit reccommendation up to 115KB when my feel tells me its not responding as it should and could cause edit problems at any time. Compare it to what you do when the "check engine" light comes on in your car....you don't keep driving it. I do not agree with your thoughts on breaking up the team pages. It is not a practical way to handle the space that you have.--Dugout 16:25, 5 November 2006 (EST)

First Professional Player?[edit]

Lip Pike is listed as the first professional (pay for play) baseball player, but I've always seen either Jim Creighton or Al Reach given that notoriety (Wikipedia notes Creighton as "probably the first"), a few years before Pike's career started, although they were not necessarily acknowledged at the time as professionals. Pike's only claim to that particular "first" may be that he was the first player to be openly acknowledged as being paid for his services, although there were two teammates cited at the same time as Pike. Can we clarify? -- Couillaud 11:14, 17 July 2007 (EDT)

Liebman[edit]

That last comment here was a bit psychotic don't you think? --Jeff 13:00, 19 July 2007 (EDT)

Jake Stephens and the 1924 Colored World Series[edit]

According to Larry Lester's book, 'Baseball's First Colored World Series, using local daily and national weekly newspapers for sources, Jake Stephens was held out of the 1924 CWS because of a stress fracture to his to the ankle. He started game 7 and batted twice, but left in the 3rd inning, noticeably limping and did not play again. His total series play amounted to one game, nothing for two. It was not a case of nerves, but simply an injury.

Riley has a number of problems with using and repeating unsourced and incorrect stories without checking their veracity. Holway is better, but far from perfect. It's likely that Riley is just repeating Holway's error. -- Couillaud 22:18, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

Pages[edit]

Sorry, I'm still getting used to the place. I only created that 1901 page because I'm trying to get it to work with the template I created. I'll modify the template instead. Soxrock 10:00, 7 August 2007 (EDT)

Again, sorry for any problems. However, for the seasonal pages, I will copy-and-paste those because I actually created all those pages on Wikipedia (if you think I'm lying, check out this link). Thank you for the pointers Soxrock 12:35, 7 August 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for the welcome message. I've noticed the problem with the formatting here and from Wikipedia. I'm trying to fit the templates and only one has worked with success right now. As for links, I know that they are not done right if they are red. I'm trying to improve this place greatly, but the formatting and links are a major roadblock for me. Soxrock 13:21, 7 August 2007 (EDT)
Yeah, I was thinking that myself. I'll link them to the precise seasonal pages soon. Thanks for noting it. Soxrock 12:39, 8 August 2007 (EDT)

Umpiring in the 1924 CWS, etc.[edit]

Most of The umps who were listed under "umpires" in the games section were from the AA and IL (which I see that I failed to mention when writing of it in the article). There was one ump, Goeckel, who umpired in the Chicago semi-pro leagues, and against whom Hilldale protested when he was listed for the western games (don't know why, other than he might have also umpired NNL games before that season), and it's possible that a few eastern umps were drawn from a lower classification than the IL. Exactly who they were (as in, did we have anyone of note), I don't know. The names were available in the box scores presented in Larry Lester's book, but I don't recognize them as being notable.

In reviewing Neil Lanctot's book on the Hilldale club (which he did not call "the Daisies"), I found further notes about Jake Stephens' ankle injury. It occurred about two weeks before the series in a game in Brooklyn vs. the semi-pro Bushwicks.

And no, I was unable to make it to the Replay Games event in Pittsburgh, which was held this past weekend. I was unable to afford the combination of plane fare and hotel costs, and ended up with a busy weekend in Kansas City instead. Having seen some of the reports on the weekend from some of its participants, I really wish I'd have been able to go. -- Couillaud 14:41, 8 August 2007 (EDT)

Re: Expos roster

I was just making the list match the articles. I can't make all those accent marks (at least I don't know how), so I copy and paste. The ones I changed this morning were the copied from the article itself. --Jeff 21:25, 9 August 2007 (EDT)

Pages[edit]

Well, I kind of pains me, but I will say you are right to ask for consensus. I obviously support the moves because it sounds more formal. If this place ever wants to be a very popular site (the bullpen, as the parent site is obviously popular) then we are going to have to look like more than just a few informal editors. If anything, at least have the full team name in the headings. Just saying something like 1909 Highlanders is very informal and is (opinion) not very likely to be typed in. Even the B-R page does say New York Highlanders.

Oh, and a quick note, do not restore the standard headings now. I have integrated the B-R link into the infobox (see any of the Baltimore Orioles/New York Highlanders/Yankees articles from 1901-1923 to see what I mean) Thanks Soxrock 10:08, 10 August 2007 (EDT)

Sorry, I forgot the second part of your message: I really think that there won't be a controversy over the newer heading, a la the infobox. It's more off to the side, it contains more info and the best thing is what I did yesterday; I made the older heading redundant because I integrated the B-R link into the box, as I mentioned earlier. So, while that can be debated, I would assume that there will not be a big deal about it. Besides, aren't infoboxes a good idea? Thanks Soxrock 10:16, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
Well, I'm continuing my work, but I will keep both headers up until consensus is reached for all articles I work on today. I won't bother the previous ones. Soxrock 11:08, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
FYI, I will change the standings to be more accurate once the naming for the articles is agreed upon (could you direct me to this place's main talk page? I don't know where to look). Then I'll be more than happy to change them. Thanks Soxrock 11:21, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
Ok, thanks. I'll post it up on the What's happening page, granted I can find it. Really, I do like the 2nd as well, but, and this is my own personal opinion, I think putting season on the end sounds more professional. It doesn't affect me too much, as long as it's the 2nd or the 3rd. I'm content with either of them. Soxrock 12:20, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
Well, I'm going to post this on the main page talk page. That place is at least likely to get some responses. I want to move all of them to appropriate names today. Thanks Soxrock 11:20, 11 August 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for voting. I'm thinking that more people haven't voted because of where it is. I alerted a few people about this

Now, the only thing stunting this is what Sean (Forman) told me the other day. He said "Why are you redirecting the pages to a new url? One of the advantages to having the bullpen wiki as opposed to a general wiki is the ability to be more baseball-specific and it seems like 1902 Tigers might be better than 1902 Detroit Tigers Season." However, as I told you, it sounds better and, in my opinion, this probably needs to be verified, something like 1902 Detroit Tigers is more likely to be typed into Google than 1902 Tigers, considering the numerous sports teams in 1902 named the Tigers. Either way, because they would just redirect, I think that this is a perfectly fine idea to move them to the year/team name format and omit the seasons. Sean wouldn't have to change all the links immediately, but rather has maybe something to kill time and be productive. Either way, unless numerous protests come out of nowhere, I'll make the moves tomorrow. At least as many as my "stick-to-it-tiveness" will allow me to. I'll do one team then lost interest for 10 minutes, and I'm really trying to break that habit. Thanks for your help and I anticipate working with you in the future. Keep up the great work! Soxrock 16:59, 13 August 2007 (EDT)

Wikipedia[edit]

I'm really trying. Every article I copy over (the season articles) I repair the red links. The names for the teams have not been fixed because, via consensus, I'm moving the articles. I want to wait until all of them are moved and redirects fixed. One more day and everything should start to get fixed.

Also, I have an idea. For all stubs, we copy Wikipedia content, then we add our own content, rather than update Wikipedia's. It would be a start and we could then make it our own.

Simply put, what I am doing is hard work. I like your awareness, it's just been a long day for me moving all these pages so far (I already have over 1000 edits today, it's only 1:00). Thanks for your help Soxrock 13:01, 15 August 2007 (EDT)

Ok, I'll try to pay more attention. I'm trying my best to notice red links, but the blue links I generally think are good enough. They can be fixed later on.
As for content from Wikipedia, do you mean errors as in actual historical errors, or only errors that appear here, such as links? Either way, I do like the idea only because it would be a starting point. Then we could do our own research and make the articles mostly ours. I'm not suggesting something like Answers.com, which updates their content from Wikipedia twice a year. We could do our own work afterwards. Besides, this place needs the player pages updated. Really, on a scale of 1-10, Wikipedia is a 9, we're about a 5. I'm trying to shoot to get even with Wikipedia, even if I edit there as well (shrug shoulders). Whatever, something else that would work for consensus. Soxrock 13:18, 15 August 2007 (EDT)

Don't quit on us now Mischa. Even though the wikipedia info needs to be fixed/reformatted/corrected/etc., we're still expanding and theoretically should only get better. --Jeff 13:17, 17 August 2007 (EDT)

I see what you mean Mischa. But Jeff is also right. I'm trying to correct the info now that all the articles have been moved. First off, the Yankee articles that I created over there were based mainly off this site, if any info is wrong with the managers, then it's really this site's fault. And whereas I see what you mean by "dupes" of Wikipedia, the plan is still to then put in our own content. We base it off Wikipedia, then we build it ourselves. That's my main goal. Like Jeff said, it needs to be fixed in some areas, but fixing is easy. Researching the info is much harder. Remember this as well, and I'm being honest; this place is still below Wikipedia when it comes to content and that stuff. If we use Wikipedia content to a certain extent than add our own content, we are bound to move up google search results.

Basically, I understand what you mean, but I don't think that it would be that big of a deal to start with the Wikipedia content then build upon it. I personally think it's a good idea, but, then again, that's why we have consensus. People are bound to agree and disagree with me Soxrock 14:13, 17 August 2007 (EDT)

You must be a historian. More than I am one, because I've never thought their info had too many errors, if really any at all. Either way, then how about we take maybe a couple elements. Not the entire article, but a couple paragraphs? The stubs here still look completely empty. They at least do need content. Either way, I do plan on asking consensus on this. You are entitled to your opinion, I understand what your saying, I just want to see if more people agree with me or you. Keep up the good work Soxrock 14:37, 17 August 2007 (EDT)
Well, I didn't do that page on Wikipedia. A friend of mine did. I've done most, but I didn't do all of them. Sorry Soxrock 14:57, 17 August 2007 (EDT)

Whatever. Hey, is the main page a good place to ask for consensus on Wikipedia content? I only ask because I don't know if there is a better place for it. Thanks. If the vote comes back no, then I will not go through with the plan Soxrock 15:17, 17 August 2007 (EDT)

Ok, thanks I will do it later on. Kind of busy right now. Soxrock 15:21, 17 August 2007 (EDT)

Ok, thanks Mischa. I'm feeling better since I've come back from that mini-break, I feel more willing to listen to others. I've started cleaning up standings templates as well. Soxrock 20:08, 26 August 2007 (EDT)

Players[edit]

Sorry for player links that aren't precise. I have no idea which players have shared the same name as others in history. Sorry Soxrock 20:10, 26 August 2007 (EDT)

Thanks. I appreciate it and it'll be easier to make the links on the rosters and stats. I'll be working soon tonight. Soxrock 18:33, 27 August 2007 (EDT)

DeFelice[edit]

Ha, but you see. Every thing needs a starting point. I could easily plan to expand upon this onto numerous articles. However, you are right with the prospects who shuffle between the majors and AAA. But for established veterans, I think it's not a bad idea. I'll cut you a deal: When I feel like getting around to doing them, I'll start. And I'll stick to the vets.

Btw, you're point of it being in the article, I refute it to this extent; some articles, DeFelice's by example, does not even have any text, so it actually would work there. Besides, people who are looking for quick reference may find seeing the team up there very convenient. I am not going to say you are wrong for reverting, it's simply that it's not a bad idea for being quick reference and for being a good addition. Believe me, I could put that feature in all player articles. I won't just do one at a time. Thanks for your concern and keep up the good work Mischa. Soxrock 20:49, 28 August 2007 (EDT)

Ok, thanks. You see, since my autoblock at Wikipedia expired (autoblock meaning it was not my fault, it was trouble at my IP) and I've also signed up at other Wikis, not to mention I've lost 6 hours daily due to school, my schedule at the Bullpen is a lot more crammed. I don't have endless hours here. Having said that, I will get around to adding the current teams to all players soon enough. Thanks for approval

Btw, will the featured article ever be updated? It's been Lou Limmer for at least a month now, ever since I joined the 'Pen on the 5th. Soxrock 21:12, 28 August 2007 (EDT)

Featured article[edit]

Ok, thanks. One of the goals of this place should be to get to the level of a daily featured article. I just started to get a little annoyed seeing Lou Limmer for the 500th time in the past 4 weeks. I'll help get the seasonal articles up to featured article level, btw. I am very willing to accept help. Thanks Soxrock 21:26, 28 August 2007 (EDT)

Yeah, but no need to rush. We need to grow at a careful pace, and prevent huge messes. Yes, I know that means not transposing articles from Wikipedia here until the place is cleaned up. Also, in order to have daily featured articles eventually, we need to have more than enough featured articles to do so. There are two components to doing so, we need to fulfill both. Keep up the good work Mischa Soxrock 21:33, 28 August 2007 (EDT)
Well, I hope this finally means that I am being accepted here. Like I told you earlier, I did feel a bit unappreciated, now my calming down is starting to make me more productive. And let me quickly change a point from that last message; I mean Wikipedia articles not written by me. As you've said, I can copy-and-paste articles that I created on Wikipedia and on other places. But I will lay off of the articles that I did not create. Thanks. Btw, on Saturday, I'll give dedication throughout the morning, because with the College Football season starting on Saturday (I do have interests outside baseball) I won't be here much in the afternoon. Just a head's up. Also, due to school, do not expect me from 9:15-4:25. I'm at school at those times Soxrock 21:48, 28 August 2007 (EDT)

Wife/child[edit]

Oh, I had no idea. Congrats on your due child. Best of luck to you Mischa and your wife Soxrock 22:01, 28 August 2007 (EDT)

--Rbraunwa 22:37, 30 August 2007 (EDT)

I cleaned up the list a bit (at least made sure the listings don't run together, and to rearrange them chronologically), but I'm not sure what the list is saying. It looks like it was cut and pasted from a spreadsheet with some cells smashed into each other, with occasional data at the end being truncated. It's missing such things as Carl DeRosa's perfect game in 1947 (the only 9-inning perfect game in the history of the American Assocation, and has major league games (when it was said to be a list of non-ML games), with a few non-perfect games thrown into that ML list.

Also, AFAIK, there was never a perfect game thrown in league competition in the Negro Leagues. The only known perfect games were thrown in exhibitions, and (again AFAIK) against non-league competition.

Rbraunwa, can you give some further background as to what the codes mean on the list? --Couillaud 12:12, 31 August 2007 (EDT)

Some of this is already on the perfect game page. The minor league list is obviously incomplete and I think the others need some editing. I just don't have time right now. - --Mischa 12:39, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

And congratulations from me too, and to your wife as well. -- Couillaud 14:51, 31 August 2007 (EDT)

It's Jewish custom not to name a boy until the brit milah (circumcision) which is Thursday. If it were a girl, she would have been named at the next Torah reading (Monday, Thursday, Saturday and most holidays). We've had names picked out for at least five months I think but only me and Miriam know them right now.

Jeff, how did you know I would be a Papa and not Daddy or Dad or Abba? - --Mischa 17:10, 31 August 2007 (EDT)--Mischa 17:10, 31 August 2007 (EDT)

Congratulations to you, Mischa! - Randy 16:40, 2 September 2007 (EDT)

I never realized how much time the "little templates" that you work on take. --Jeff 09:28, 4 September 2007 (EDT)

Chris Young(s)[edit]

Eh, do what you want. But I'm just saying that "way the heck do you need the code to their B-R page as an appendage? Can't it be simplified?" Obviously, my opinion has been disputed Soxrock 16:46, 4 September 2007 (EDT)

Mischa, something you might want to know[edit]

[8]. Apparently, along with using the names of SABR members, Ron Leibman has used your full name on Wikipedia. Any hard feelings? Soxrock 18:05, 6 September 2007 (EDT)

I know. He also used Michael Eng's too. He just strikes me as very juvenile. - --Mischa 20:15, 6 September 2007 (EDT)

Help?[edit]

Mischa, first off, welcome back. Hope you enjoyed the holidays. Now, I tried my hand at a template for the roster templates, this template and I can't find a way to make it work on the roster templates? Can you help fix it? I've tried numerous ideas, tweaking it, but it has yet to work. Thanks Soxrock 11:12, 16 September 2007 (EDT)

Featured article[edit]

Re:Categories, SNBs, and flags[edit]

National team category naming conventions[edit]

Most of our categories are created by the joining of two distinct parts, usually an organization and a role (or descriptor) in the format ORGNAIZATION_ROLE. Lets take a look at the cat Category:Nippon Pro Baseball Players to see how this works. In this example there are two parts to the category naming schema; "Nippon Pro(fessional) Baseball" - the organization, and "players" indicating role. The same could be said of Nippon Professional Baseball players (org-Serie A1, role-players), Minor league umpires (org-minor league, role-umpires), or even the category [Major League Baseball] Players (org-Major League Baseball, role-players). In the final case Major League Baseball is implied, and probably at some point in the future will be added. In all of these cases, we do not have a "main article" for the category for whatever reason, either the category is too big (MLB players), or incomplete (Serie A1), etc. Note that these pages could (and possibly should) be created; and would likely be subdivided by the first letter of the person's family name (i.e. List of Major League Baseball players: A, or something like that). We do have "main articles" in other instances (for instance Hall of Famers).

Now lets look at an example for a national team, the men's NT of Australia; the "organization" in this case is the "Australia national baseball team" and the descriptor is "player" so the category is "Australia national baseball team players". The national team's name "NATION national baseball team" not "NATIONAL DENOYM national baseball team" due to the reasons previously stated; that it is avoids problems where nations use different names for international competition (Taiwan vs Chinese Taipei), teams representing multiple nations (Bosnia and Herzegovina), cases where it might be ambiguous (American vs. United States), or obscure (Basotho). It also creates a standardized naming convention, instead of the current using multiple styles. Additionally, there are multiple Australian (and Cuban, Japanese, Canadian, Team USA's) national teams but only one [senior] national baseball team of Australia from which the articles' titles were derived.

National "college" teams versus national "university" teams[edit]

The United States is odd in that it splits its men's senior national team into two teams, a side for the Olympics and World Cup (termed the "Professional team"), and another side that represents the United States in all other senior-level events AND the FISU tournament (termed the "National team"). The United States is the only federation to do this, to the best of my knowledge, all other nations have a side that only competes in the WUBC and other "university level" (18-21 y.o.) international competition - only in Europe - and international friendlies. Also, note that most nations call their teams at this level university teams or under-21 teams not college teams likely owning to the tournament's name.

Re:Capitalization[edit]

Why was the decision made to have the naming conventions as such (that is capitalizing each new word). Having only proper names capitalized makes it easier to type, as categorizes are case-sensitive so missing one capital letter (i.e. :Category:Australian national Team Players returns non-existent category). It also can make the categories a bit easier to read especially for longer phrases, compare:

 • Chinese Taipei Women's National Baseball Team Players
 • Chinese Taipei women's national baseball team players

Additionally, the "page names" are simply level 1 headers; following the MOS, words in header titles are only capitalized if they were proper names. Lastly it follows the Category Policy Proposal which states "Category names should be follow the standard English, the first letter of the title and that of any proper noun should be capitalized."

SNBs[edit]

The SNBs go on all (or most) pages that contain links within the template. So for instance the Pirates franchise SNB would go on PNC Park, Pirate Parrot, Pittsburgh drug trials, etc. The seasons SNB would go on the seasons (i.e. 2007 Pittsburgh Pirates, 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates, etc.). The minor leagues SNB would go on the minor league affiliates of the club, the coaching staff would go on all coaches, etc. All four would go on the Pittsburgh Pirates page.

Flags[edit]

All of the raster flags have been replaced by vector versions. To use flags use these templates:

Italy → Flag of Italy Displays the flag alone
Italy → Flag of Italy Italy Displays the flag with a link to the main article of the country
Italy → Flag of Italy Italy Displays flag with full name of country
ITA → Flag of Italy ITA Displays flag with abbreviation

Also, the national team links with flags have been replaced by ITA → Flag of Italy Italy. These should only be used in tables, not in text.

Sorry for the length and congrats on the child. --MichaelEng (talk) 12:46, 17 September 2007 (EDT)

Stat Rating[edit]

Mischa: For hitters there is a minimum 150 PA for rate stats and for pitchers there is a minimum 50 IP for rate stats. This is according to minors.baseball-reference stat pages. Is this a hard line that must be followed or is there a percentage allowed if the number is close. In short, whats the rule?--Dugout 22:59, 19 September 2007 (EDT)

Sean here. The choice of 150 and 50ip was completely arbitrary on our part and should not be taken as an endorsement of any numbers.--72.81.14.23 22:51, 25 September 2007 (EDT)

Team Pages[edit]

Mischa: Could you give me an example of what information you think a team page should contain.

The year by year record on the short season leagues team pages is a duplication of the league page. There seems to be no definite pattern in the way team pages are constructed.

I think a team page should contain the teams batting, pitching and fielding stats plus the top batter and pitchers names and stats for that particular year. (or I use to)

With the new minors.baseball-reference stat site Sean has put up you can link to whatever other team stats are available.(and he isn't going to stop there) I put a trial link on one of the GCL team pages and with a few clicks it makes the info that is on that particular team page look sick.

I don't want to just start filling up pages with information that is easily available elsewhere on the site, or is not what is really wanted. Give me some advice ....--Dugout 13:19, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

Team Pages 2[edit]

I do not disagree with anything you have written.....However there are those of us who do not have the sources to put together pages such as you pointed out....and I don't have to tell you how hard and expensive those sources are to come by. With most of the league pages completed my usefulness to the site my be ending. As much as I would like to work the team pages, in the way you suggest, the source problem may be to much to overcome.--Dugout 14:16, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

What is up with the "Settlements in [State Name]?[edit]

I have just started seeing these pages pop up on the Wiki Bullpen. Is this approved? or is anyone looking into them? Thanks JaxJaguar 20:14, 24 September 2007 (EDT)

They're approved. It's part of an attempt to reorganize the huge and unwieldy places category. - --Mischa 20:19, 24 September 2007 (EDT)

Images[edit]

The creative commons images I've been finding are through yotophoto.com... and most of them are originally from flickr. Have I been tagging them incorrectly? -Chisoxfan 20:03, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

Playoff pages[edit]

Well, I'll finally say thanks. I was still busy perfecting them, so I wasn't about to take credit for an unfinished product. I appreciate you thanking my efforts, to be honest, that's a first for me when it comes to what I accept as genuine. I modeled all pages after the 1995 playoff pages and some 2006 playoff pages, I hope to make them all consistent soon enough. Hope you like them. SoxrockTalk/Edits 21:40, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

Vandalism[edit]

(No longer existant page) is vandalism/nonsense and should be deleted; 71.243.163.252 has been removing a lot of content but I was able to revert it all. Thanks jj137 (Talk) 15:34, 5 October 2007 (EDT)

71.243.163.252 sounds like the guy who was claiming a guy named Joe Chiasson accomplished lots of stuff he never did. When we removed it, I guess he got upset. Thanks for fixing it! - --Mischa 11:21, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
No problem jj137 (Talk) 13:57, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

Blank lines[edit]

Many pages have blank lines following an image (usually a baseball card) so that the text is distinct from the image.

Thanks for the minor edits here and there! - --Mischa 11:41, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

OK, should I continue to rm the white space or should I just leave it? Thanks jj137 (Talk) 13:57, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

I don't think it needs to be removed. There are more important things to work on, I think. - --Mischa 14:22, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

I guess I have been getting a little too sidetracked with white space; there's nothing there (in the white space, that is) so I have no reason to worry about it. Thanks plenty for the help. jj137 (Talk) 16:57, 7 October 2007 (EDT)

New Editors[edit]

Mischa: I will go along with whatever comes out of a discussion of the group. These new boys seem to think that they walk in and make whatever change turns them on, regardless of any reasoning that might be behind the way it is. I will replace any major change to any pages that I have built unless discussion rules otherwise. There is plenty of constructive work to do without this wild method of editing.--Dugout 13:33, 8 October 2007 (EDT)

More Vandalism...[edit]

80.97.12.51 has vandalized quite a few times, and I'm surprised it has gone unnoticed. All of it has been reverted, but I'm not sure why nothing has been done by anyone. Maybe you could help? Thanks. jj137 (Talk) 20:56, 12 October 2007 (EDT)

Stats[edit]

Yeah, it might be, but I'm doing it my preferred way. It gets the job done, I guess. SoxrockTalk/Edits 10:04, 19 October 2007 (EDT)

Admin?[edit]

Well, I've been contributing for two months now, and the whole Wikipedia thing is in the past. I want to know if you think I could be an administrator here. I am willing to be one to further help this place out. Thanks SoxrockTalk/Edits 21:33, 19 October 2007 (EDT)

Oh, I see. I'm ok not being an admin, but there are pages that I'd like to be able to edit. That page has been protected for over a year and a half. I just don't like seeing "view source" when I'm logged in. That's all SoxrockTalk/Edits 12:58, 21 October 2007 (EDT)

Re:Sanfeliz and NT templates[edit]

Sanfeliz was a pitcher and led the Serie in pitched IBB.

The NT templates are showing up oddly because the templates need an altlink parameter added to most of the country data templates. --MichaelEng (talk) 15:43, 26 October 2007 (EDT)

Re:News, category names, and stadiums[edit]

 • News: Unfortunately, I don't know of very many English-language sites for the nations you listed. The CBL's site has occasional reports. For Cuba & Mexico, Prensa latina, Trabajadores, and Granma have occasional releases in English.
 • Category names: See category naming conventions and the discussion above.
 • Stadiums: I am still working on the stadiums (need to finish adding images, templates, and redirects), but MEBot reached its edit limit so I have to wait to upload images and add new pages. There shouldn't be very many duplicates unless the stadium changed names recently or had an ambiguous name (e.g. "and" vs "&" or if there were abbreviations in names). --MichaelEng (talk) 21:19, 29 October 2007 (EDT)
Re:cat move, I will do that once the bot can edit again and will take care of the double-redirects. --MichaelEng (talk) 21:42, 29 October 2007 (EDT)

Another vandal[edit]

83.138.145.18

Didn't we have someone with the same M.O. just awhile back? User 207.248.164.199 did nearly the exact same thing less than a week ago; it might do well to block this one (and maybe the range for both) right now, just in case.

Someone has nominated Marek Deska for deletion on Wikipedia: [9]. With your interest in Honkbal, I thought you might wish to chime in. 69.68.238.142 15:04, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

Bot?[edit]

Hi, since you are an administrator I would like to ask you this. I have installed the bot program(s) on my computer and would like to see if it is OK to create a bot account on here. Right now, the only thing I would have it do is finish the tedious task I have been working on, which is to change the "Click edit above to add more biographical information" to simply "Biographical Information" on all biographical articles. I just wanted to know if this was OK. Thanks.   jj137 (Talk) 15:38, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

Great, thanks! I'm almost done with the configuring; I probably will name it "JJBot".   jj137 (Talk) 16:03, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

Cool Names Category[edit]

There used to be a category called "Cool Names", including perhaps 50 names like Pickles Dillhoefer, The Only Nolan, etc. The category seems to have disappeared totally. - Randy 12:14, 4 November 2007 (EST)

Reply[edit]

OK... good point. When doing those in the future I will modify the sentence around to say whether they are a city, town, village etc. and what their significance is to get its own article (generally just who was born or died there). Thanks   jj137 (Talk) 16:48, 4 November 2007 (EST)

Mike Young[edit]

Mischa, have a look at Mike Young (manager). It's right up your alley ! --Philippe 03:45, 17 November 2007 (EST)

Too true; I always seem to get caught up in the most trivial things. I was just trying to fix the link from heading to a redirect, but it wasn't very necessary.   jj137 (Talk) 19:51, 19 November 2007 (EST)

Flags and Tables[edit]

The table templates were being screwed up by the bad links to wikimedia commons flags. I uploaded flags for as many diffent countries as I could find on the international pages. If you run across any more, let me know. The 2006 Intercontinental Cup page still has missing bracket templates. I didn't know how to fix those. Kinston eagle 22:09, 21 November 2007 (EST)

Bot[edit]

I think I should tell you that earlier, JJBot finally finished the never-ending task of changing "Click on edit..." to "Biographical Information". The only page it didn't complete, due to protection, was Rafael Palmeiro (which probably could be unprotected, by the way).   jj137 (Talk) 21:31, 3 December 2007 (EST)

On the Places Bot, after I restored one place name earlier today, I realized that there had been a systematic deletion of the places category up to the letter "R". That's fine with me, but it's hard to keep up with some of these decisions that change the way we've been doing things for a few years. Maybe a message could be sent to the discussion group on yahoo when a change like that is being made so that all contributors are aware and code their entries appropriately. --Philippe 09:52, 7 December 2007 (EST)

Stub question[edit]

Hi. I noticed that you removed the stub designation from Dan DeVoe. I have no argument with that, but at what point does an article cross the line from stub to start? Is there a certain number of words or article size? Is it just subjective? Thanks.

Bill Gatewood[edit]

I just added a page for Negro Leaguer Bill Gatewood, but only noticed after having finished it that it is titled "Bill gatewood" (note the lower case surname). Can we fix this? Thanks. -- Couillaud 11:54, 27 December 2007 (EST)

1999 Rockies[edit]

I'm confused what I did wrong there. I just changed it into a table.   jj137 12:24, 30 December 2007 (EST)

Would it be OK to change it to look like the 1996 Rockies or 1997 Rockies? I changed those into tables but kept it in the starting lineup order.   jj137 12:30, 30 December 2007 (EST)

Fantasy League[edit]

I'm wondering if there is any interest in a Bullpen Fantasy League for the regulars here. Let me know if you have any thoughts on this. I would think we would need at least six participants, and we would have to decide if it would exist here, on one of our private websites or if we would start a private league in an existing system such as Yahoo's fantasy league. Drop me a line on my talk page and spread the word if interested. Kinston eagle 16:35, 7 February 2008 (EST)

Frank Tepedino[edit]

Upon request from MLB.com, Jonathan Mayo reports that the minor league Frank Tepedino is Frank A. Tepedino, who played for Vidalia and Statesboro of the Georgia State League in 1952-53. He also played and managed for Andalusia-Opp of the Alabama-Florida League in 1954. I will correct those leagues and insert it in Frank Tepedino's, the major leagurer's, page.--Dugout 14:05, 9 February 2008 (EST)

Sorry for the late reply. Each user has their own monobook.js where they can add JavaScript to add tools such as additional tabs, modify the top bars, etc. and the changes will appear only for that user. Whenever I try to add a script, it doesn't work; any other wiki I've edited on, it works, so I'm assuming here it is disabled.   jj137 21:42, 29 February 2008 (EST)

British records[edit]

Thanks for the welcome. For the birthplaces of British born players I used genealogy sites like Ancestry.com (subscription needed) to come up with the info.
Example for Ned Crompton:
Name: Edward Crompton
Year of Registration: 1889
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Birkenhead (1861-1998)
County: Cheshire, Merseyside
With Crompton I also cross-referenced this with his World War One US Army call-up papers. Brit Baller 18:59, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Relationship between Fred "Lefty" Bell and James "Cool Papa" Bell[edit]

FYI, no one is really sure at the moment, and it's entirely possible that we will never know definitively, but Gary Ashwill and I are working on the mystery of Cool Papa Bell's familial connections. It appears that he was the son of Mary Nichols, listed as a widow in the 1910 census, while Fred, Lee, Sam, and Robert Bell were living in the same county with their father and mother, Jonas and Patsy Bell. Jonas Bell could have been related to Mary Nichols (possibly siblings, or possibly nothing but neighbors and friends), but he is the man Cool Papa identified as his father; it just seems unlikely in early-1900s Mississippi that a black man would be able to keep two large households (5-6 kids in each), married to one woman and fathering children by another living a few miles away. Best guess is actually that Cool Papa and Fred were cousins who were raised as brothers, but half-brothers is easiest call to make at this time. We recently unearthed Cool Papa's first published box score, pitching for the Compton Hill Cubs in St. Louis in 1921, with his three "brothers" in the lineup, and one other set of brothers playing alongside as well (six positions manned by two families). Gary has it up on his blogsite. -- Couillaud 00:02, 24 July 2008 (EDT)

Brother Elephants[edit]

I've been working on the Keith Ramsey page, and I just found out today that he pitched for the Brother Elephants earlier this year. I tried going to their site for stats but it's all in Chinese (Taiwanese?). Do you know of anywhere that may have stats I can read? Thanks. 69.68.238.142 14:42, 25 July 2008 (EDT)

Found the English version of the site but still couldn't find stats. The English version of the league's site seems to be about five years out of date. 69.68.238.142 14:55, 25 July 2008 (EDT)

Thank you very much. I found an article about that game but was hoping that he had more than that one shelling in his Taiwan career. I guess they had seen enough. Thanks again. 69.68.238.142 15:34, 25 July 2008 (EDT)

Will do. Thanx Jeff 14:16, 7 August 2008 (EDT)

Waseda University Player[edit]

Do you have any info on a player named Aurturi Suzuki? I have also seen his first name spelled Arturi and when he moved here people called him Arthur. He was a member of the Waseda University team that toured the states in 1921. For some unknown reason, he stayed in America and in 1922 he helped George Suggs design West End Park in Kinston, NC. There's no rush on this it is for a longterm project I've been working on concerning baseball in Kinston during the 1920's, and I'll probably still be working on it a couple years from now. Deletion request[edit]

Hi there. Could you delete Talk:Joe Strong. It's basically just nonsense that has nothing to do with improving the BR Bullpen. It would be better of being said in a fan website. By the way, is there a place I could request deletion of pages? I wouldn't really want to bug administrators all the time with deletion requests since I'm not one myself. A place (or category) to use to request deletion would be nice to know about. If there isn't one, do you think we should have one, or should non-admins just directly ask administrators to delete pages (since there aren't many deletion requests here). Thanks! -- RyanCross (talk) 03:25, 12 August 2008 (EDT)

Matteo Pizziconi[edit]

Mischa, I noticed you took care of Matteo Pizziconi's page. I have to point out that you mentioned that he "took a break" from the minors to join the Italian national team in Edmonton, and cancelled my edit. I have to point out that he did not take a break, but rather stayed in the minors. There were 2 more Pizziconis pitching on the Italian team, Andrea and Mattia, but they are his cousins, not to be confused with him (especially Mattia, they do have similar names, so I see where you could be making the mistake).

Rynie Wolters[edit]

I've sent a message to Bill Carle, the head of SABR's bio research committee, as requested. I'll let you know if/when I hear something back. By the way, you should consider joining SABR yourself. They have committees on European and International baseball which would be right in your areas of interest. --Philippe 07:58, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

Bill Carle wrote back saying that there is city called Schans and that it is likely the correct birthplace. Schantz would be a close, but erroneous transcription. Could our contributor in the Netherlands confirmed that city did exist in 1842 ?

Re: SABR membership. It's $ 65 annually in the US, with a 20 $ discount if you're under 30. See the membership section of sabr.org. Well worth it, especially given the three or four annual publications included in the membership cost. --Philippe 15:59, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

Problem is that I cannot find éven a town JUST called Schans, though there seem to be at least three hamlets or so, in the province Noord-Brabant alone, (if you forget about "city" one can have been the birthplace). There are several more, which are "Such Schans" or "So-schans", but can be called just Schans or "the" Schans by locals. There are at least two hamlets called "De Schans" (definite article is part of the name). A "schans" was a defensive fortification made of earth, there were lots of those in the run of history and many small places, as well as parts of large ones were named after them, but anything worthy of being called a city? I dont think so. I was in a small place called Ommerschans last Saturday, I am sure that one did exist in 1842, but that was certainly not a city, hardly a hamlet. Nevertheless in 1842 there was a "colony" for beggars, tramps and the like, walked around there on the very grounds of the colony, (there was a big horse thing). If Rynie Wolters had been born there, he had had a very bad start, think about poor Russian peasants banned to Siberia, add or take away (the latter less likely) some horrors, and there you have that bad place to be born. Nevertheless, not impossible, there were guards too and all.
There is one place and municipality on the German border called Nieuwe Schans or Nieuweschans (New Schans), Schantz is an archaic (German) spelling for "Schans". I found one reference to it as N. Schantz with google, but that one was from 1679 (mutations in Church members in Oude Schans (Old Schans(!), that could have been Rynie Wolters' birthplace too), in 1681 the church folks spelled it the modern Dutch way already. Nieuweschans has currently about 1,500 inhabitants, I'm pretty sure they do not play baseball there BTW. The Schantz problem is solved, but we still do not know where Wolters was born. If all we have is the name of the place and the country we have just too many options to be sure. --ThW5 18:03, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

- I checked some more: Apart from the three in NB, there is a place called Schans in Dutch Limburg and one in Gelderland. Five possibilities, and that are just the EXACT matches, the "De Schans"es are in Overijssel and Friesland, and Nieuwe Schans and Oude Schans are in Groningen, and there are some more, so we do not even know the province he was born in. --ThW5 18:37, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

Interesting work. The town on the German border may explain why the German spelling was used on his US documents. Unless a proper birth document is found, it's pure conjecture, though. --Philippe 18:17, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

Ramon Ramirez[edit]

I see that on Ramon Ramirez (ramirra02)'s page, he is both listed as being born in the DR and pitching for Panama in international competitions. Are you saying these are two different pitchers, and also different from the Venezuelan-born one who made his debut a couple days ago ? Can you split the page accordingly, then (and go back and correct some links I just changed ?) --Philippe 17:10, 2 September 2008 (EDT)

Boston Americans[edit]

Mischa: There is a page, article or link to Boston Americans. Is there some reason not to show it as such? It does give some good reasons for the name being possibly incorrect. But you won't know it if you can't get to it. The 3rd Edition Encyclopedia, (I just checked), lists the team as the Boston Somersets.--Dugout 20:41, 3 September 2008 (EDT)

East-West Game pitchers of record[edit]

I listed Larry Lester's book as source for up to 1953 because I assumed that it was used as the source originally (I didn't add that data myself), and to distinguish the post-1953 games as having been confirmed by reports and box scores in the Chicago Defender; if the book disagrees with what we have up there, then go with what the book says. -- Couillaud 11:57, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

Templates[edit]

What would fill these templates? Those templates have been linked to for about a year and a half and nobody has created them yet. My feeling was that the pages look better without the broken links than with them and if such templates were eventually created, the templates can easily be added back to the pages. I'll undo those edits if you feel that's best. I was just taking care of Wanted Pages while watching the game. Kinston eagle 21:41, 9 October 2008 (EDT)

Smoky Burgess[edit]

Mischa: I changed Smoky's pix because the one that was in there was not of very viewable quality. I thought the one I inserted was much better. However if you disagree change it back. No problem with me.--Dugout 13:10, 9 November 2008 (EST)

Smoky #2[edit]

Mischa: I did not put the old pix back on the page. I saw the change, I do not know who did it...I thought maybe you had. I am not upset about it. To start with I just thought the old pix is too dark and it was hard to really see what Smoky looked like. If you want I can try to lighten up the old one and just use it, or leave it like it is now. Whatever you want to do is fine.--Dugout 21:11, 9 November 2008 (EST)

Negro Leagues or "miscellaneous"?[edit]

Mischa: I take exception (though not umbrage) to recategorizing the Twenty-Fifth Infantry Wreckers under "miscellaneous teams and leagues"; while they rarely barnstormed (not many long trips to take around the islands, and I have no word of them touring the mainland), they were in the days before the founding of the NNL a source of race pride, for having taken on and beaten all comers. They also (as stated in the article) provided core players for the Monarchs, while also providing players to help augment the already existing St. Louis Giants. I categorized it as a Negro Leagues team because it provided a refuge for talented black players in the military (Rogan was actually recuited into the 25th) when jobs with independent professional black teams were scarce, and because it finds more similar teams in that category than in the miscellaneous one. I'm not upset by your choice (you have the responsibility to keep such things straight and make such calls), but I wanted to put my $.02 in. -- Couillaud 14:51, 14 November 2008 (EST)

My issue, I guess, is that "miscellaneous" is such a poor category to be placed into. It includes pre-professional teams (e.g., Irvingtons), independent minor league teams of recent vintage (the members of the Canadian Baseball League, which probably should be included under "Minor league teams"), semi-pro teams that hired Negro Leaguers (e.g. Bismark), an obscure and marginal semi-pro Negro Leaguers (Claybrook), plus the barnstorming all-female Colorado Silver Bullets. Perhaps there should be a few more categories created for some of these. All Nations and the Wreckers are for the purposes of SABR's Negro League Committee considered "Negro League" teams, despite the mixed-race makeup of All Nations and the isolation of the Wreckers, primarily because of their importance in the pre-history of the Monarchs (maybe we need a category for pre-league Negro teams) and for the Wreckers' contemporary importance to the collective black community.
The Wreckers have for a long time been subject to myth and misunderstanding. I am currently (and slowly) compiling a list of their games as reported in Honolulu newspapers to get a better picture of its roster (I'm finding some players who played for pro teams before joining the Army, as well as the players who moved directly into the NNL), and what their level of play was.
The call is yours, but I would recommend cleaning out the "miscellaneous" group and creating a few new categories to hold them, time permitting. -- Couillaud 01:58, 16 November 2008 (EST)

Stubs[edit]

My view of it is that the information on all these players (height, weight, birthplace, etc...) is easily available now while they are still in the minors. As they leave the minors, this info will disappear from the internet. In my opinion, it makes more sense to capture this info now while it's easy to find than to wait til later when it will be much harder to find. The fact that you're writing bios for Max St. Pierre and Julio Borbon belies the theory that people would rather write for red links than for stubs. If you feel it would be better for the site to have red links than stubs, I would have no problem with deleting the stubs I've made. Kinston eagle 17:31, 16 November 2008 (EST)

I'm not mad or anything, I just had to re-group. My original thought was to have a page on every current minor league player. I have already made pages for everyone who was in the Cleveland farm system this past year and was working my way through the Braves farm system along with recent first round draft picks when you made your comment. My goal was to have a page for everybody by the start of the 2010 season and then adding the new players each year would only take a couple months in the off season since most people would be returning players. The sheer number of players required quite a bit of planning and scheduling. I was all geared up for the task and stopping all at once left me with little direction as to what to do instead. I can see your point about having a site full of stubs, but scrapping the plans meant having to come up with a whole new plan about what project or projects to work on for the coming year. This takes some time to schedule out when I'm going to do what and gathering the proper resources to tackle the next project. I have also taken some of the spare time to work on a book I have been planning concerning the Kinston teams of 1921 and 1922. They were in an independent ("outlaw") league and as such, they have been lost to the sands of time since their records were not reported in the digests of the day. I have intentions on working on the Kinston Indians season pages that I started last year over the Thanksgiving holiday assuming my wife and daughter don't have other plans for me. I'll also be fleshing out some of the stubs I made of KTribe players. In the coming year, I hope to start season pages for the other seven Carolina League teams starting with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans since I have the info already. I also have an interest in doing pages for minor league all-star games. I did a couple as tests this past summer. Kinston eagle 00:12, 23 November 2008 (EST)

Deletions[edit]

Mischa: I wish you would have discussed those two deletions with me before treating me like some street bum. That goes for Jeff and phillipe also. There was a reason that I went to the trouble to do all that was done. If you three don't want to work together on these type of things don't expect me to take it laying down. Frankly what was done was about as childish as it gets. How do you think it makes me feel when I work all day on this site and you and your companions do as you did. I expect an explanation.--Dugout 22:52, 22 November 2008 (EST)

Most Vandalised Page Discussion[edit]

I saw that you listed this 10 page as the most vandalised on a disucssion so I thought I'd give you some facts about it. I played college ball with him in Arizona at Scottsdale Community College (which you do not have listed) and I know that he had a shoulder injury that started when he was in Scottsdale and carried on throughout his career and eventually ended his career. He was also a very highly touted prospect and would have undoubtedly made a name for himself in the big leagues had he never got hurt. I havn't heard anything about him since he was done with baseball so that is all I really know of that I should tell you unless you wanted to know about the homerun he hit in college that is still the conference record for longest homerun ever hit. If you need anything else about him or any other guys from scottsdale community college in the '70s let me know and I would be pleased to help.

Baseball Cards[edit]

Mischa: got your note on the cards, thanks for the info. Wish I would have known that when I started. I bought all those cards at a flea market a couple of months ago, they were all in and old shoe box and it took me forever to sort out what we already had up and what was useable. I just finished the last of them yesterday and doubt if I'll be lucky enough to run across a find like that again. I hope they are are satisfactory and again thanks for the directions.--Dugout 13:49, 16 December 2008 (EST)

Rico Petrocelli[edit]

Mischa: I am quite sure you are aware that I posted the Petrocelli article. There is nothing that you are alluring to that even resembles the truth. I suggest that you re-think your statement and re-post my work. You have more than over exceeded common sense in your actions. Don't you know anything about communications before action? I expect this to be corrected and an apology for your remarks.--Dugout 17:00, 22 December 2008 (EST)

Division Elite[edit]

Hi Mischa, I updated the article for the Arvernes de Clermont-Ferrand and was wikifying the players' names. I noticed you posted on the discussion page as I was editing the article, I'll respond here intead of trying to chase you down there. Would we consider the ballclubs that play below Division Elite as the "minor leagues" in France? That's why I included them in the article. Not sure how we want to play that, so to speak. I can read French fluently, so I can translate any article for this website. From what I understand, players like Joris Bert and Fred Hanvi were recruited into the American Minor Leagues directly from Division Elite, so maybe if they play below Div. Elite in France, it would almost be like Little League baseball? Most of them are only 19 or 20 years old, so they would in fact be kids. Let me know what you think or if we should discuss this further on a general discussion page. Cheers. Happy 2009! --Oaktree b 20:58, 30 December 2008 (EST)

Hi, where did you find those public domain pictures on the FFBSC website? I can only ever find ones that have a copyright tag attached to them. The ones I uploaded here originally came from the French Wikipedia, I could never find any usefull ones on the Baseball Fed. website. Send the link if you have it. Thanks --Oaktree b 21:01, 4 January 2009 (EST)

I think I see those picutres on the website itself, but they have a copyright tag on the right hand side, Christophe Dupont Elise. I've seen his website as well, when I was looking for things for the Joris Bert article. Mr. Elise is a commercial photographer. I might just end up emailing them as well to double check, I've emailed the Arvernes team to ask about using the player photos.--Oaktree b 22:23, 4 January 2009 (EST)

Mischa: Hy Cohen played a short time with the Cubs in 1955. He is on the SABR stat sheet but there is nothing listed for him in 1952-53 do you know if he was in the service at that time. I have searched and kind find nothing.--Dugout 17:33, 8 January 2009 (EST)

Female players for Team Canada[edit]

Um, can we include bios for the female players that have played for Team Canada? I found some who work at a private baseball camp in Quebec (http://www.dinellebaseball.com/?lang=EN&page=coachs&coachID=50). That one is for Erin Forman, a player for Team Canada. I've never really thought about including them, but they do play for the senior team at a national level? Or is this website only covering the male pro players? I'd like to include the female players, but wasn't sure what the "rules" around here are, so to speak.--Oaktree_b 22:36, 14 January 2009 (EST)

I found a listing on here for Geneviere Beauchamp, so I figured that we do include them. Good, I'd hate to be sexist, but wanted to make sure I didn't upset the apple cart. I've done some articles for Wikipedia, and they weren't "notable" and didn't meet their standards for inclusion, bla bla bla. It seems to me that we're much more inclusive, and friendly around here :) Thanks, I answeered my own question. --Oaktree_b 22:41, 14 January 2009 (EST)

Clemente Clutter?[edit]

I must apologize for my tardiness in responding to last September's words of welcome as well as to your advice and feedback concerning my Clemente contributions dating from that time.

 • For starters, I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that it was only recently that it even occurred to me that this is indeed a method I might use to communicate with you and with other Bullpen veterans, having initially been utterly stymied for lack of an e-mail address.
 • Moreover, I'm afraid the combination of 1) not owning a computer plus 2) suddenly expanding family obligations had made my intermittent windows of opportunity vis-a-vis internet access all the more single-mindedly devoted to pumping RC tidbits gleaned during the first decade of this century into the initially somewhat skimpy Clemente article.

Obviously, "skimpy", within the vast fellowship of terms from which one might draw to describe the Bullpen's current Clemente entry, is one adjective whose membership has clearly expired. Others, such as "bloated" or "grotesquely distended" might more readily spring to mind, though I'll continue to nurse the hope that "encyclopedic" and "intriguingly detailed" will prevail.

Be that as it may, it now appears my prodigal and promiscuous phrasemaking has run me afoul of PHP. It seems I have, perhaps predictably, bumped up against some sort of PHP ceiling since, at this point, not just editing but merely accessing this by-now Moby Dick-scaled behemoth is, more often than not, generating the dread 'Fatal error' message, i.e.:

"Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/baseball-reference/www/bpv/includes/StringUtils.php on line 296"

or

"Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/baseball-reference/www/bpv/includes/GlobalFunctions.php on line 152"

or

"Maximum execution time etc. etc. etc..../includes/Parser.php on line 1000"

or

"Maximum execution time etc. etc. etc..../includes/Sanitizer.php on line 979"

or any of a seemingly infinite number of variations on this particular theme.

Now, while my lack of computer / internet access is a situation which has been recently rectified, my lack of computer skills and knowledge continues unabated. Thus, here I am, hat in hand, soliciting advice.

Do I need to pare this sucker down or, at least, break it down into separate articles? I'm guessing the 'maximum execution time' applies to the entire site and can't be adjusted. But of course I could just continue in this vein, stumbling around in the dark, ad infinitum. "But," I say to myself, "why make an uneducated guess when I can ask someone who might actually know?" Thus, once again, here I am.

Thanks again -- David

No Mission Impossible for Mischa[edit]

Thanks a million, Mister G -- this will do nicely. I restored my original timeline heading and linked from there but that's about it. Lord knows when I'll finally get down to filling in the remaining biographical sections but, by that time, "5-Tool Flyhawk" may have to fly the coop as well. We'll see -- David

Misdirected Mischa Missive[edit]

Whoops. Guess I still don't understand how this mode of communication works. My original query was addressed to you; when the reply was unsigned [or at least not signed with a functioning link] I assumed it was from you. Did you forward my concerns to KE? If so, thanks for that and, again, thanks for the early autumn feedback -- David

P.S. Extraneous though it may be, my next move is to KE's discussion page to pay tribute directly.

Pittsburgh Pirates[edit]

Thanks for catching my error! I was happy to see this Wiki-like area, but very unhappy to see how much about the Bucs was missing. I'm a former Pirates fan who has had enough of the despicable ownership of Nutting. Monsieurdl 10:34, 8 February 2009 (EST)

Jose Nunez[edit]

I found a bio for a Jose Nunez here, http://www.defendamerica.mil/profiles/apr2004/pr042004b.html. It says he played in the minors and did a few games in the big leagues for the Mets and it has a picture of him we could use as it's PD from the Government. My question is, do you think it's this guy http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Jose_Antonio_Nunez or this guy http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Jose_Nunez, or is it someone else completely? I think it might be the first one, he played for the Mets, but the name is different and I don't see any mention of the Orioles in his stats page on the BR site... Should I start a new article, or do you think it's one of those two I mentioned? --Oaktree_b 21:42, 9 February 2009 (EST)

Carlos Bernier[edit]

Mischa, since you are from Pittsburgh, I wonder if you happen to know any things about Bernier that most of us don't know. Bernier played for Pittsburgh in 1953. Some references call him the Pirates' first black player, while other references say Curt Roberts was the first black player, believing Bernier to be Puerto Rican rather than black. Perhaps you've seen local research or articles on Bernier that can help the B-R Bullpen article. What I've been able to put there makes him seem like a very interesting person. - Randy 23:17, 4 March 2009 (EST)

Layout for WBC page[edit]

What are your thoughts on this : BR Bullpen:Batting Cage. I moved the ticket down to the game, did a clear after the intro and moved the TOC off to the right. I'm not sure it looks all that great, but I think it's a little better than what's there now. To me, that looong Table of Contents just doesn't look very good where it is now. 69.68.238.142 11:11, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

Grays Harbor Ports[edit]

Why do you keep copying the Grays Harbor Ports page with the Wikipedia-ized edition (which they copied from us initially)? It does not add any new information and messes up some of the formatting. - --Mischa 19:25, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

Two reasons: (1) the article the way it is looks like crap and deserves to have more information in it. (2) Carl Thompson (GHP's 1976 owner and manager) was my uncle, and I would like to see more in the article partially as an honor to his legacy. Kelly A. Siebecke 19:36, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

1) You said it looks like crap now. How does it look better to change the formatting so links do not work properly? I don't understand. 2) You want more information in there. What information was added other than that which related to other teams based in the same city? 3) If you want more information about the team or your uncle, please add it in. We'd like to have more info. - --Mischa 19:39, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

Because I don't much care for being called a "twit" (you know, in the summary of the Wikipedia article on the Grays Harbor Ports that you edited?), AFAIC, if you want to keep the article as it is, knock yourself out.

It was merely an oversight on my part that the formatting for one of the links worked improperly after the edit. My intention was to expand the article somewhat, give a little more information, and improve it. I had (and have) no desire to get into an online battle with someone who's young enough to be my child over something that essentially means nothing in the global scheme of things. All I wanted to do was give some honor to a dead relative who made an impact on my life and the lives of the players he coached and gave an opportunity to do what they loved. <feh> Kelly A. Siebecke 20:10, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

Links to Negro League umps[edit]

The umps to which I'm not linking are men whom I'm not certain were actually Negro League umpires. I don't know if they umpired for the entire season or whether they were hired only for the Colored World Series. In 1924, I know the agreement was to use white umpires who were unaffiliated with either the NNL or ECL in order to avoid any charges of favoritism; as I recall, there was still one complaint about hiring an umpire from the Chicago semi-pro league, as he had earlier umpired some NNL games. As for 1942, I only linked the ones I could definitely identify as long-time Negro League umps (specifically Ghoulston and Donaldson) or as former Negro League players. If I failed to link someone and he's in Riley's Biographical Encyclopedia, go ahead and make him a linked entry.--Couillaud 13:30, 25 March 2009 (EDT)

I will add links the next time I update the Colored World Series articles, though anyone should feel free to do so if I procrastinate. Honestly, most of my Negro Leagues research centers around the 1920s, where more of the regular umpires are familiar to me, and the only names I readily recognize from the 40s were players in the 20s, and the ones I linked to were the ones I have a vague intention of creating an article for when I have time and no higher priorities (sounds like a familiar dilemma, doesn't it?), or hoping they'd catch someone else's eye and inspire an article from a new editor. How many regulars do we have here?
I'm thinking of adding the composite boxes for the 1924, 1942, and 1946 series articles from the stats I've compiled while researching those series (actually, 1924 stats are from Larry Lester's books. These are not readily available online that I know of (and not easy to find in print either). Would there be any problem with it being previously unpublished research? It's actually something I'm hoping to contribute to the next Negro League Book for SABR. -- Couillaud 16:06, 26 March 2009 (EDT)
Well, I would never consider it to be a good Featured Article until we got its name right: its official designation is the "Colored World Series" as opposed to "Negro World Series" or "Negro League World Series". I will, however, make a few changes to the 1924 and 1942 articles to add composite boxes and complete links as soon as I can get a solid block of time to work on it.
BTW, could you take a look some time at the NNL standings in the 1923 in the Negro Leagues article for me? I set up an "all games" standing for the league (to include Negro League games not counted in the "official" standings), but I have never been able to get the table to format correctly, and it drives me nuts and makes me hesitate to make the same same adjustment to the ECL standings. TIA -- Couillaud 10:35, 27 March 2009 (EDT)
All inter-league championship series between mid-western and eastern Negro Leagues were officially called "Colored World Series". Contemporary weekly black newspapers use that term in every season I've seen, and it's the way The Negro Leagues Book refer to it as well. -- Couillaud 14:50, 27 March 2009 (EDT)

SABR Minor League Database[edit]

Mischa - is the SABR data base gone forever? The new deal looks good and is ok for the MAJOR LEAGUES as far as getting the info for bio's. The MINOR LEAGUES full league name is not there permanently to be able to print a work sheet out and the same goes for the TEAM nick-names. It will double the time getting what info needed. You have any answers or ideas? Let me know - --Dugout 20:25, 6 April 2009 (EDT)

George Sweatt & Rube Currie[edit]

I noticed that the main page says that George Sweatt was the only man to play in all four Colored World Series from 1924 to 1927. This is incorrect; Rube Currie pitched for Hilldale in 1924 and '25, and then for the American Giants in 1926 and '27. He pitched one game (IIRC) without a decision the latter year. -- Couillaud 21:44, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

Help Please[edit]

If you have access to any reference works or sites on Taiwan baseball, I just found out that former Kinston Indian Milton (Milt) Harper, who holds several single season KTribe batting records, played over there for a few years before falling off a building in Taipei in October 1993 in what may have been a suicide. If you run across any info about his career over there or his death please drop me a line. He last played in the US in 1990, so it would have been between 1990 and 93. I got that info about the 1992 "World Cup" directly from his bio on the Jays home page, so I assumed it would be correct. I have no qualms with your link editing of the biography's I have worked on. However if you are going to re-write everything here to suit you personally, such as the Spencer article, just tell me and I will not continue wasting my time to suit your ideas. You are not a re-write artist and your thoughts are not really that good. If you want my continued support I suggest a little more communication! There are literally thousands of player pages on this site that have two lines of type on them...that mean nothing and you have no idea how to get a plan together so that we all are working towards the same goal!--Dugout 17:43, 7 June 2009 (EDT)

It mentions that he played in the Olympics for Italy and played in the Italian League as well as the minors. Here is his BR minors page: [13]. "Rick Dempsey" = Ron Liebman[edit]

Ron Liebman is at it again. The "Rick Dempsey" who is asserting the 1963 death date for Dobie Moore is quoting a different source, but is following Liebman's M.O. of claiming a "reliable" source. this time it is the Negro League section of the 2008 ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia, supplied by SABR's Negro League Committee. The SABR-NLC, of which I am a member, does not have a definitive date or place of death or burial for Dobie Moore, and as I wrote before, the Walter Moore who died 1963 was not the baseball player. The best we know (according to a couple of census records) is that Dobie Moore was born about 1893/95 in Georgia (specific city/county unknown). Wikipedia banned Liebman for such tomfoolery, and he attempted the same changes there with a sockpuppet. We may have to do the same. -- Couillaud 17:41, 13 July 2009 (EDT)

Stat tables[edit]

I'm okay with changing the color scheme on the stat tables, but I don't know what would work for you. See if what I just did for Dobie Moore works. The career totals are still white on black, but all boldfaced, while the seasonal notation is blue on white. -- Couillaud 14:16, 17 August 2009 (EDT)

You know, the truly weird thing is that they have always been white on black for all my seasonal stats since I started adding them in. Is this a new problem, or have you always had the problem and never mentioned it? -- Couillaud 14:51, 17 August 2009 (EDT)
Try Dobie Moore now. FYI, I've never had a problem with the boldface-white-on-black scheme. Are you certain it isn't just a problem with your monitor, or have you had the problem on multiple monitors, or we seen similar comments from others?
Anyway, this is the next try. If there are still problems, perhaps you can get one that allows you to see, then we'll change the rest. -- Couillaud 18:46, 17 August 2009 (EDT)
All current stat tables now have the same basic format. I keep the list of players for whom I have entered stats on my own user page, but here is the current complete list:
* Newt Allen * John Beckwith * Ray Brown * Willard Brown * Oscar Charleston
* Andy Cooper * Rap Dixon * Josh Gibson * Pete Hill
* Judy Johnson * Dick Lundy * Biz Mackey * José Méndez * Buck O'Neil
* Dobie Moore * Dick Redding * Mule Suttles * Cristobal Torriente

Height Changes[edit]

I've discovered a bug in the BR coding. Any player who has a height listed in the Macmillan Encyclopedia with a ½ in it (e.g. 5" 8½") has seen his height disappear from the electronic record. I've mentioned the bug to Sean Forman, but I'm not sure how and when he'll fix it. In the meantime, I'm using my old 1979 paper edition of the encyclopedia to enter all the missing heights I can find. --Philippe 21:12, 25 August 2009 (EDT)

2009 World Cup[edit]

When adding a bullet about the World Cup under today's or yesterday's date, could you try to pick out one or two games worthy to be highlighted rather than list every single one. It would fit in better with the rest of the chronology (I've trimmed down your September 10 entry to two items, as an example). That's not to detract from the great work you're doing documenting international tournaments, by the way. --Philippe 13:39, 11 September 2009 (EDT)

Direction of the Pirates[edit]

Mischa, I just don't know anymore. Yes, they have pretty much gone all the way in rebuilding, but some decisions of Huntington look as bad or worse than Littlefield or Bonifay. Grabow and Gorzelanny looks like a completely horrible trade. I still don't understand why the Pirates never valued John Grabow. And it was just mentioned that they were interested in getting him back as a FA. Why let them go for drek? Same with Gorzelanny. It seems pretty clear that the Pirate players have quit on the season, I'd like to see someone be held responsible. Getting even INTO the conversation about the 1890 Pirates is something I never thought I'd live long enough to see.

Ron Liebman[edit]

Hi. I notice that Ron Liebman is back as User:Sun Chu. Particularly odd since the block on his original User:Ron liebman account expired long ago. I'm sure it's no coincidence that someone claiming to be Mr. Cicotte's grand-nephew suddenly appeared at Baseball Wikia this morning to change Ed Cicotte's page there (undoing Liebman's edit from 2007).[15] Liebman saw that and immediately came here, created a new account, re-did his edit here, then went back to Baseball Wikia and got into an edit war over the edit there. I guess I should check Wikipedia now! And you might want to do a checkuser here, if possible. He's probably crawling around in here like a virus. —Wknight94 (talk) 16:07, 1 October 2009 (EDT)

Rouen Huskies President[edit]

Would the team president of the Rouen Huskies be notable enough for inclusion here? The Huskies website has some nice pictures of him here that would could use, but I'm not sure if we include presidents of ballclubs, and the presidents of European ballclubs at that. Xavier Rolland is his name, you see his name online quite a bit if you read about the Huskies. Oaktree_b 21:45, 26 October 2009 (EDT)

Ed Post[edit]

I have checked three sources on Ed's winning 19 or 20 games. Two newspapers have him as the only Muncie Pitcher to win 20 during the teams four years in town. His son, Bob, is quite sure that is the case and after calling Max Sumwalt who was a pitcher for the team in 1949-50 he verifies that. I can remember the hoop-a-la the night he won it. Personally I think that the stats turned into the league office are a few days off then those that appear in the paper. We lost the play-offs that year in a wild game and things were more or less topsy-turvey due to the protest and I can see why the stats that are in the paper show more numbers than the guide. I am sure he won the 20 and would like to list it as so...if it is ok with you.--Dugout 15:24, 25 November 2009 (EST)

Japanese Link[edit]

Saw this link [16] to a Japanese ballplayer's obit. I'm hoping you have the time and resources to flesh out a short article on him.

On a personal note, all the issues that have kept me from contributing over the past year are about resolved and I should have more time to participate in the very near future. I hope you're doing well. Kinston eagle 21:05, 18 January 2010 (EST)

WP lists his name as Toshiaki Takemiya as a red link on their Recent Deaths page, but I'm not sure if there are alternate spellings. Kinston eagle 21:25, 18 January 2010 (EST)

French Div. Elite players[edit]

Hi, you can send the list of names you want, I'll work at it slowly. I've got rosters saved in a pdf from the 2008 Challenge de France, so they're a bit out of date. I'll try the FFBSC or other websites I have, I saved a few things from the Olympic qualification tourney for Team France too. Unless you're dealing with the bigger teams in Division Elite like the Huskies or Senart, it's kind of hard to come by. I'll see what I can do! Oaktree_b 17:53, 26 January 2010 (EST)

I found a list of players for the 2009 Challenge de France, on a site called calameo.com .YOu have to register, but once that's done, you can read all kinds of PDF magazines for the Rouen Huskies (they put one out every so often, monthly at times) and they have rosters for the bigger tournaments in France. Done[edit]

Thanks, Mischa and/or Philippe. I've cleaned up May 27, though I did do just a bit of ASSUMING, re the first item:

Re the final clause, I give 'Chicago' precedence over 'his' and, accordingly, have changed the latter to 'its.' If I've guessed wrong, it's easy enough to remedy. Thanks, gentlemen - --David 13:43, 03 February 2010 (EST)

Response[edit]

I'm assuming that they're done in the US. If they do happen to come back, then the final game can be removed. Alex 20:03, 14 February 2010 (EST)

Response[edit]

I just went by what Baseball Reference Minors said. Here's his page:

What's New[edit]

I wrote of bunch of long articles over the last few weeks, including Bob Groom, Cupid Childs, Alberto Lois, Ted Wilborn, Hideo Nomo and Allen W. Thurman. Couldn't you have put one among the list ? Maybe, we need a page where we point out recent articles of interest for this feature ? --Philippe 09:49, 24 February 2010 (EST)

Thanks Mischa. I think using the "What's new" talk page is the way to go. --Philippe 10:17, 24 February 2010 (EST)

Div. Elite[edit]

Hi, I'll get to those remaining bios for Division Elite in a bit, I gave up editing on here for Lent. Kind of my one guilty pleasure, so a little scrifice won't kill me. I'll be back after Easter in full force. Oaktree_b 14:12, 26 February 2010 (EST)

dallas eagles[edit]

i found some stuff from i think this is the team need help. can email at ctaylor1229702000@yahoo.com i got 2 pic and a fade sign ball all i know is the are black players and have there name on them

Player Pictures[edit]

Thanks, Mischa. I appreciate you noticing. Thought I would help out here from my hobby of collecting pics of players. 14,500+ and growing!

Craig Lewis[edit]

Mischa, I'm away from home and don't have access to my Expos media guides right now. I'll check when I get home on Sunday, but I'm pretty sure he was just a free agent signing. --Philippe 15:02, 19 March 2010 (EDT)

I've now had a chance to check and it's "signed by the Expos as a free agent on April 2, 2001. " All the other info you have in the article matches, except he's listed as 10 pounds heavier (220 instead of 210). --Philippe 06:56, 21 March 2010 (EDT)

Reverting my edits[edit]

Why are you going behind me and reverting what I changed? At least have the guts to tell me what you are doing and why would also be nice. Hey, I've got an idea. Instead of me wasting my time (fixing some of the messes) why don't you do it to start with, instead of following right behind me and changing my efforts? Obviously you are an admin of this site, but I would like to have a list of who I need to contact if I have a question. JaxJaguar 21:41, 20 April 2010 (EDT)

The reason (as I'm sure you are aware) that I removed the coaches was because it was a dead link / red link. I mean, if the info on the page is months and months old and the person on the page doesn't have a page, it's basically worthless and bordering on an eyesore. But never fear, they will remain now. JaxJaguar 19:53, 21 April 2010 (EDT)

Rolando Arnedo[edit]

I got a chance to check my Expos' media guides, but Arnedo doesn't show up, because he hadn't emerged yet from the DSL by the time the 2004 guide was printed. I can't provide any confirmation on his birth details. --Philippe 18:13, 25 April 2010 (EDT)

Coimbre/Clemente[edit]

Sorry, Mischa. I know they admired each other professionally and knew each other to some extent but beyond that I'm in the dark. Whether they'd met before FC scouted RC for Pittsburgh or whether a mentoring relationship developed either before or after that point, I couldn't tell you. The following is the sum total of what I've got on the two of them, the first being my almost certainly butchered attempt at a translation of the relevant passage in Luis Mayoral's as-yet untranslated Clemente bio and the second an unsourced paraphrase from Nick Wilson:

FRANCISCO “PANCHO” COIMBRE:

“Roberto Clemente was a serious man, but he would joke with his close friends and had a great sense of humor. I had the opportunity to play with or see the great players in the Negro Leagues in the U. S., in Canada and all of Latin America including the Caribbean League, excepting, of course the major leagues, which I did watch. Roberto, for me, objectively, is the greatest ballplayer I saw.” (1)

CLEMENTE on COIMBRE (Passage from Nick Wilson’s 2005 book on Latino pioneers in U. S. baseball):

"One of the greatest hitters ever to have come out of Puerto Rico was outfielder Francisco Coimbre, who made his American debut in 1940 with the New York Cubans. Hall-of-Fame pitcher Satchel Paige once called Coimbre the greatest hitter he had ever faced. Roberto Clemente always maintained that Coimbre was a better hitter than he (Clemente) was." (2)

Sources for FRANCISCO “PANCHO’ COIMBRE:

(1) Luis Mayoral, Aun Escucha Las Ovaciones (Carolina, Ciudad Deportiva Roberto Clemente, 1987), p. 49

(2) Nick C. Wilson, Early Latino Ballplayers In The United States: Major, Minor And Negro Leagues, 1901-1949 (Jefferson, McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers, 2005), p. 152

Also, I just found this recollection by Mayoral on Google News Archive (from Steve Wulf's 12/28/92 SI article, "Arriba, Roberto!"):

"There was a pregame ceremony on the day after his 3,000th hit, on October 1. We gave him two awards, the Governor's Cup and a clod of earth from the field in Puerto Rico where he used to play. A picture went out over the wires, and when you looked at it, Roberto had such a sadness to his face. He looked almost gray in the black-and-white picture. I remember showing the picture to Pancho Coimbre, a great player in the Negro leagues and a favorite of Roberto's. Pancho took one look at the picture and said, 'Este hombre esta muerto.' This man is dead. Three months later Pancho's premonition came true."

I'll leave you with that. I got about 340 hits for 'Clemente Coimbre' at GNA. If anything interesting pops up, I'll let you know. Also, I can email Danny Torres, who used to do a regular interview feature for the now-defunct official Clemente site. At the very least he should be able to contact Roberto Jr. and perhaps Mayoral. - --David 20:10, 16 May 2010 (EDT)

Spellcheck?[edit]

Mischa, is there a way to spellcheck the entire wiki site? Right now I'm guessing as to what might be misspelled. Thanks. --Mdaubrey 00:00, 5 June 2010 (EDT)

Terris McDuffie[edit]

I do not know of any public domain photos of McDuffie. I'm still of the opinion that fair-use statutes and practices would allow usage of copyrighted images here.

As reported in the New York Amsterdam News, Terris McDuffie died in his sleep on April 29, 1968 in Bonifay, FL. He was reportedly 62 years old. I just uploaded the story for you, named "McDuffie_obit.pdf" -- Couillaud 19:50, 6 June 2010 (EDT)

SSN Index (available on Ancestry.com) shows birth date July 22, 1902, last residence NYC, and death date May 1968; it should be noted that this would be when the Social Security Administration was notified of his death (and termination of benefits).
The Florida Death Index (also available via Ancestry) shows Terrence McDuffie died April 1968 in Holmes County, FL. Bonifay is in Holmes Co., the county seat and largest municipality in the county. FYI, the story says "buried last Saturday", indicating May 4, 1968.
Four different passenger lists (Puerto Rico to NYC, 1935, 1937, 1939, and 1942) all consistently show his birth year as 1907, and his birth place as Mobile, AL.
P.S. -- Sorry I didn't notice this for a week. I was on vacation when you posted and saw the top entry (1942 CWS) before noticing this one. -- Couillaud 00:56, 7 June 2010 (EDT)

Response[edit]

You're welcome. My resources for those types guys are quite sparse (I put together their articles based on what I find in the articles that link to them), but still I think it's good to try to write articles for them anyway. Alex 19:48, 23 August 2010 (EDT)

My frustration is more with the "Don't change it because I put it there" attitude. Maybe I'm the one that is out of line, but I don't know.

As for the BR minors link, 99% of major leaguers have a BR link and a BR minors link. Are we really going to go back and add the BR minors plink to every page? If that's what everyone wants, that's fine, it'll be a lot of retrofitting work. But every BR minors link for a major leaguer is accessible through the main BR page. --Jeff 23:20, 7 September 2010 (EDT)

I have 2/3 of the GCL left. I'll go through the DSL and VSL, but I'm not adding any of those unless I'm 100% sure its the right guy. For example, there's a Leo Hernandez that has been a pitching coach down there for 15 years. I saw a bio that says its the same guy who played for the Orioles and Yankees, but that was a 3B. --Jeff 21:14, 2 October 2010 (EDT)

Luis Perez[edit]

I was going to do a disambig for Luis Perez. There are 11 listed over at BR minors, but BR minors is missing some of the earlier DSL and VSL players. Do you know of any that played there that didn't make it to the BR minors database? --Jeff 21:37, 9 October 2010 (EDT)

Thanks so much[edit]

Hey, Mischa, how's this for a timely response? Not exactly sure how I missed your message when I stopped in about two months back. In any case, as you've no doubt deduced in retrospect, I wasn't exactly 'back.' Nor am I now, I'm afraid; just happened to be doing some house-cleaning today when I unearthed one particular ProQuest printout. At that point, I couldn't resist injecting the relevant Ruth-related quote into the appropriate Bullpen slots; also touched up a bit of the RC page. Going forward, I hope to contribute a little more frequently than in the past few months; how soon if ever RC will reach something resembling completion (at least through my efforts) is another matter entirely. Nonetheless, thanks again; it's good to be back, even a little bit. --David 22:47, 10 Oct 2010 (EDT)

1942 Colored World Series[edit]

First of all, thanks for promoting the article to featured. I know you mentioned it long ago, but as slowly as I was filling in the player bios, I figured it would never be done. So thanks also for filling in the remaining bios.

Also, I received permission from Larry Lester (NoirTech Research) for the use of a photo from the 1942 series (I just uploaded it as "GibsonGreeneMcCrearyBrown.jpg" but I've never added a photo to a page before and would appreciate if you would make that addition for me. The photo is commercially copyright, but the Bullpen has NoirTech's permission to use it for this article. -- Couillaud 09:24, 27 October 2010 (EDT)

New Template[edit]

There's a new user adding this template to a large number of player pages. Was going to rollback all his contributions since the website linked is an extremely partial list and the has ads on it. The value to the bullpen seems very limited. Just seems to be a guy who wants to show off his collection or generate lots of hits. Either way, it doesn't seem to be like the kind of thing we would want to encourage. Didn't want to rollback without some discussion of the issue. Any thoughts? Kinston eagle 06:40, 29 December 2010 (EST)

Mischa: Why are you removing the 1950's page that I put up and we discussed back in May 2010? I expect an answer for your rudeness! Whats the deal?--Dugout 17:30, 3 January 2011 (EST)Dugout

Mischa: I sent you the above message yesterday. There is nothing anymore wrong with this page then there is with hundreds of other pages on this site. As to the referance as my own personal page... ridiculous!! Any user as the right to make corrections as needed to any page. If thats the pattern I would love to re-do those childish managers charts. Please leave this page in the format it's in. If there are errors, correct them. Let's cut the bull and get on with things that are necesary. I e-mailed you about this yesterday. --Dugout 09:57, 4 January 2011 (EST)

Question[edit]

Mischa: Do you want me to continue on as as a contributor on this site or do you think it best I just pack it up and move on? This last fiasco gives me the opinion that you and the rest involved no longer care for my input. I was of the feeling that things were going well between us and still feel that this last problem could have been cleared up with a group discussion. However there is no reason for any user to refer to another as a "Moron". Please give me the courtesy of an answer and we can go from there.--Dugout 18:06, 6 January 2011 (EST)

Don White[edit]

Mischa: With all due respect when you made the insertion on the Don White page I was working on the bottom half. So as you know when I closed the page (not knowing how to merge) I lost what I had placed on the page from there on down. I appreciate your corrections to my work, but please wait until I am off the page. That for me was about two hours of time and work.--Dugout 17:33, 17 January 2011 (EST)

Away for a Week[edit]

I will be traveling on business for the next week-ten days and probably won't have a chance to do any editing. If you could keep a look-ouit for items worthy of the calendar during the period, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, --Philippe 08:43, 25 February 2011 (EST)

1938 East-West Game (2nd)[edit]

I added a few more notes to the game, specifically the reason it is not considered canon. This game and a few other transgressions cost the owner of the Birmingham Barons his franchise.

In one of the news articles I consulted, I noticed mention that suggested that the two teams had met earlier with a 14-3 result, but that the game had been played in Baltimore, with no mention of any "Penmar Park". SABR usually has access to the Paper of Record, which includes the Baltimore Afro-American, but that access has been suspended at the moment (rights were sold; they say they're working on it), so I can't consult the Afro-American about that game. The only reference I've seen to anything called "Penmar Park" were in Los Angeles, the earliest ref in 1957. -- Couillaud 15:55, 2 March 2011 (EST)

CATEGORIES[edit]

Mischa, I have been filling info into 1938-1939 Category blocks with Debut, Births or whatever info that is usually missing in this area. Should the Debut date follow the Player as the first entry or should it be placed at the end of the category space with Births and Death dates? Like the Max Macon page or the Mickey Livingston page...which should I use?--Dugout 18:49, 24 March 2011 (EDT)

Carlos Santana (not the guitarist)[edit]

It was not an unassisted triple play, just a regular one. Very spectacular, and he's likely to first player to get one in his first start at a position in the majors, but not quite infinite improbability drive material. Just wanted to let you know why I reversed it. --Philippe 14:19, 5 April 2011 (EDT) p.s. Thanks for adding the material on Kevin Mitchell in NPB; I was going to drop you a line about it, but you came through before I could do it ! --Philippe 14:27, 5 April 2011 (EDT)

Mischa: There are some errors on the 1938 American League page and the 1938 Philadelphia Athletics page also. They need corrected.--Dugout 12:46, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Mischa: The won lost records of the 1938 American league page and the won lost records of the 1938 Philadelphia Athletics page as well as the order of standings, do not agree.--Dugout 13:03, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Mischa: There seems to be a discrepancy in the Roy Weir or Bill Weir page. The header has him as Roy but all BR info lists him as Bill Weir. I don't know how to handle this. Could you take a look--Dugout 14:03, 4 May 2011 (EDT)

José Iglesias[edit]

I need your help in inserting the proper categories relative to his career in Cuba. Did he play in the Serie nacional? I guess he played on the national junior team, or he wouldn't have been able to defect. Are there any stats available for his time on the island ? Thanks, --Philippe 10:44, 9 May 2011 (EDT)

RE: sportswriter bios[edit]

My pleasure. And I suspect a good deal more will be forthcoming since they are, for the most part, simply byproducts of the 'Game I'll Never Forget" articles to which I'm posting the links ( a project which, since I'm hoping to link every one of those articles, is, by my most optimistic reckoning, about 10% complete). Bill Burgess's "Meet the Sports Writers" project is, of course, invaluable for many of the older writers. I'm especially glad to finally get something up for Les Biederman and Arnold Hano, since they're both so central to my ongoing Clemente project. Anyhoo, thanks for the feedback; feel free to chime in with suggestions/corrections. - --David 20:01, 19 May 2011 (EDT)

RE: "I assume you did not just copy-and-paste"[edit]

Gee, Mischa, I sure hope you didn't put any money on that hunch. In fact, looking back over my recently added sports writer pages (or, more precisely, their respective biographical sections), about half - i.e. all but the briefest ones - are, by and large, copy & paste jobs, albeit sometimes highly edited ones (that is to say, purged of non-baseball-related material and occasionally rephrased to facilitate elisions). This quickly becomes apparent to anyone willing to check out the corresponding endnotes which supply links to the source articles in their entirety. The 'offending' bios would include Neal Russo, Harold Kaese, John Steadman, Dave Nightingale, Heywood Broun, James Enright, Bill Jenkinson and Charley Feeney). The only exceptions to this latter group - i.e. bios of at least moderate length which nonetheless feature my own uniquely lugubrious prose stylings - would be Les Biederman and Arnold Hano, the two writers with whose work I was already well acquainted through their Clemente connection.

As I indicated in my previous message, the sportswriter pages - outside of LB & AH - are purely incidental to my pet project of the moment (i.e. attaching links to some regularly featured Baseball Digest articles to the appropriate player pages) and not something on which I want to spend a whole lot of time. Re the Sportswriter pages themselves, my only real passion is providing examples - via links from Google news Archive and/or Google Books - of each writer's work.

IOW, assuming the aforementioned C & P is indeed a no-no, as for fixing the offending entries, perhaps it would be best for either you or Philippe to apply your superior editorial acumen to the task. (As Philippe can no doubt attest by now, if there's one thing more torturous for me than writing itself, it's editing). While I clearly have zero emotional investment in this second-hand prose (the more 'merciless' the editing the better, as far as I'm concerned), I don't know that I have the wherewithal - neither time nor aptitude - to distill each of these leisurely entries into to its lean, mean, 2 or 3-sentence essence, if that's the prescribed remedy. Still, if you'd like me to take a shot, please advise me. Otherwise, I'll defer to the more experienced editorial hands, eagerly anticipating the result. Thenceforth, following your lead, I'll be fully prepared, when next this situation occurs, to 'do as the Romans do.' Thanks, M. - --David 15:59, 24 May 2011 (EDT)

Outside the Bullpen[edit]

Hey, Mischa; I just stopped by RC's BR page, in particular, the HR log, and was reminded how sketchy its play descriptions are - usually minimal, sometimes surprisingly descriptive, but, in both cases, often just wrong. Do you have any inside track on who to contact to offer additions/corrections or do I simply raise this issue through http://www.baseball-reference.com/feedback/ ? - --David 13:49, 1 June 2011 (EDT)

thanks ... and three questions[edit]

Thanks for the welcome. I saw the empty pages and thought I'd help a little.

I noticed the pages I created a few days ago still don't appear on their respective category pages. Does it take some time for them to show up or did I code them wrong?

Also, B-R Minors has two pages for Mayque Quintero, but they're the same person. No idea how to get those consolidated. It appears they created a starter page when Quintero was drafted, but then added a second one after he started playing. Quintero was born in Cuba rather than Miami, but all of the other info. can be kept and consolidated. (This also means there's no need for a Mayque Quintero disambiguation page at Bullpen.)

Also, not a major issue, but in Auburn, NY, Bullpen has Falcon Park followed by Leo Pinckney Field at Falcon Park, which isn't completely accurate. The original Falcon Park was torn down after the 1994 season and Falcon Park (II) was built on the same site in time for the 1995 season. The field at Falcon Park wasn't named for Leo Pinckney until the end of the 2004 season, so it seems like there should be a Falcon Park (II) entry for the period 1995-2003 or '04 (depending on how an in-season name change is handled).

Thanks again.

Negro League photos[edit]

Thanks, I definitely will! I edit a lot at Wikipedia, so I have some other things that are distracting me from finishing those LOC images, but I'll get around to it soon. I also found a big panorama of the 1924 Colored World Series that has the name of each player written on it. I've uploaded a couple crops from it already, and will do more. This is a more extensive site than I'd ever realized, very cool. Delaywaves 00:40, 29 July 2011 (EDT)

J HofF member passes[edit]

see this. We don't have an article on him yet. Kinston eagle 14:20, 3 September 2011 (EDT)

Dibo Johnson[edit]

No, sorry - all of my Negro League photos came from two Library of Congress sources, I don't really have any resources other than those. I tried a quick search of him just now and no photos came up. His career did begin before 1923, and all photos published pre-1923 are Public Domain, so if you find one of him from around then, that would work. Delaywaves 23:02, 6 September 2011 (EDT)

Need to delete image[edit]

Hi Mischa,

We need to delete this image:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/File:LEFEVRE_20080906_02.jpg

I just got an email from the copyright holder.

Neil Paine 13:14, 23 September 2011 (EDT)

This one, too:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/File:LEFEVRE_20080904_06.jpg

Neil Paine 13:45, 23 September 2011 (EDT)

I've uploaded quite a bit by him... He takes most of the photos on the Huskies website. Strange thing is in the email from Xavier Rolland of the Huskies (the team's Steinbrenner if you will, the head guy), he says to give credit to the photographer, example Copyright: Christophe Elise... I assumed the Huskies had bought the photos from him (or owned the rights to them) and were then free to distribute them as they wished. Oaktree_b 20:41, 24 October 2011 (EDT)

Note[edit]

Two things:

First, I left a reply to your comment on agatetype.com about the discrepancies in published Negro League stats.

Second, you really need to archive this list, man. Of all people in the Bullpen, your discussion page is longer (~1800 lines) than most articles.  :-) -- Couillaud 10:38, 14 October 2011 (EDT)

Maxime[edit]

That photo of Maxime was a new one I just copied from the Rouen Huskies, I don't remember where the other one came from, likely from the same site. Or I might have gotten it from the FFBSC website, going on the history of the article...Oaktree_b 21:35, 17 October 2011 (EDT)

Archiving your talk pages[edit]

While my talk pages are not in need of archiving (I don't get very many messages), I have archived them in the easiest way. I simply created a link to another page, which was ID'd as user:couillaud/archives01 (this is standard Wikipedia usage), then cut and pasted all comments up through 2009. If you choose to do so, I'd recommend you create an archive for each year, just to make searching a bit easier. And remember, if you're working on it and it all goes south on you, just restore from an earlier version. -- Couillaud 23:20, 22 October 2011 (EDT)

Jason Camilli[edit]

Do you have any info about Jason Camilli's stint in Italy? It would be around 2003-2004. His bio mentions CUS Parma as the team, which I'm not sure is the same as the 1st division Parma team. --Philippe 13:45, 23 November 2011 (EST)

Mexican League[edit]

Thanks. I was a bit intimidated to tackle those for a long time. There's still some holes in the manager information as the Almanacs don't list managers anymore, but I think its a good boost. --Jeff 18:33, 28 November 2011 (EST)

Authors?[edit]

Call it a case of copy & paste. No, they are not authors, given a strict definition, other than writing and publishing articles. -- Couillaud 09:35, 7 February 2012 (EST)

SABR Encyclopeida[edit]

Have you seen this site, I assume it's run by SABR, http://sabrpedia.org/wiki/Jose_Planes_%28c797%29. Still pretty bare so far, should be interesting though... Oaktree_b 08:51, 6 April 2012 (EDT)

Yeah I can do the gm info for him. Probably have it done some time tomorrow (4/26). --Biggtone23 21:20, 25 April 2012 (EDT)

Photos[edit]

Thanx. I finally got the camera I've wanted, so I spent the warmups and early innings looking for shots I could upload. Hopefully I can get back to some more games with more visiting teams. When I saw Vinnie Catricala, I didn't realize he was a local boy. Went to my old high school. Also, Rickey Henderson was there coaching 1st base for the River Cats, but we already have plenty of pictures of him. --Jeff 09:51, 18 June 2012 (EDT)

The Year in Baseball[edit]

Thanks for the kind words Mischa. I had a relatively unbusy week at work and tackled that fun project. I've discovered a ton of books I haven't read but would love to if I ever had the time...

Can you look at the 2011 page ? All of the championships in various leagues are still missing. I think you worked on the previous years. --Philippe 09:35, 3 August 2012 (EDT)

Lamigo Monkeys[edit]

Do you know where I can get a roster list with player numbers for the Lamigo Monkeys in the CPBL? I've found a guy on Flickr that posts pictures, but I don't have names to go with them. If I can find out who plays with which number on their jerseys I could upload the photos... The only info I can find is on the Monkeys website, which is all in Chinese. Thanks! Oaktree_b 21:43, 25 September 2012 (EDT)

1946 Cienfuegos roster[edit]

You seem to be my go-to guy for requests... Do you have a roster for the 1945-46 Cienfuegos Cuban League team? http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/fotos-magazine has all their images, and they're in the public domain (published before Feb. 1947 blah blah), but I only have last names from the image. Can you find a roster? Thanks! Oaktree_b 21:18, 4 November 2012 (EST)

Copyright law extends back to 1923. Anything published before 1923 is public domain. --Jeff 02:23, 5 November 2012 (EST)

Actually, I think they're in the public domain as the copyright was not registered in the US, just like the last round I uploaded from the same site. There were published in 1945-46, so they fell out of copyright in the US in 1995-96. They wouldn't have been restored when Cuba joined the Berne Convention in 1997. They are still public domain in the US. I think we're ok to upload them. (I haven't had any problems using them on Wikipedia, and they're notorious for copyright violations, so they're ok here). Try and follow the rather confusing chart shown here, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fotos_db_S1_Mario_Diaz2.jpg. These fall under the last category per Wikipedia. Oaktree_b 22:03, 8 November 2012 (EST)

Tim Wallace[edit]

I'm back from my long vacation. I have nothing at all on Wallace except for the stats line for the two years he played for Jacksonville. He never received a mention in media guides those years. All the best for 2013 ! --Philippe 03:38, 29 December 2012 (EST)

A question[edit]

I'm brand new here, though I have plenty of editing experience from Wikipedia. I had a question and you seem to be a good person to ask. Would it be a problem if I took this archive, which is quite long, and broke it down into smaller archives by categorizing the DYKs? AutomaticStrikeout 19:38, 11 February 2013 (EST)

Since I can't edit the main archive page, maybe it would be simpler if you could remove the sentences (maybe 20 at a time?) and I'll find a place for the ones you removed among the categorized archives I've created (therefore, more will get created as time goes on). AutomaticStrikeout 19:53, 11 February 2013 (EST)
I finished the ones you gave me. Perhaps it would be helpful to add a link to each of the archives I'm creating on the main archive page. Then, once all the sets are categorized, the main archive can provide the links to the categorized archives instead. AutomaticStrikeout 21:21, 11 February 2013 (EST)

I finished the second batch. AutomaticStrikeout 15:43, 15 February 2013 (EST)

I don't expect that I'll be finishing this project. My apologies. AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 22:14, 7 May 2013 (EDT)

1942 In the Negro Leagues[edit]

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll think about it, but I'm not sure what in particular would be good for the "Did You Know" template.
I still have a bit more to add to the "Notable Events". I'm going to flesh out some of the integration debate of that year, including Judge Landis' infamous statement, Larry MacPhail's dispute of that statement, and some of the responses by sportswriters, black and white (including the Sporting News' full-throated defense of segregation). I'm going to put more detail into the accident that killed the Buckeyes players, and also add the story about Roy Campanella's suspension and then defection to Mexico. There are one or two events of lesser notability, but still worthy of being added (the merger of the NAL St. Louis franchise with the NNL NY Black Yankees, the near-defection of the Manley's Newark franchise, Gus Greenlee's abortive attempt to rejoin the NNL, for example).
1942 is my newest project, and I'm slowly building a database of seasonal anecdotes as well as statistical work. I'll probably also add the currently accepted statistical leaders (based on Holway's book and on SABR's information in B-R) as well, although I consider neither to be particularly reliable at the moment.

Triple Crowns[edit]

I got the minor league hitting and pitching triple crown lists done and added to the Triple Crown page. When I get the new edition of the EoMiLB, I'll add in any others from 2007-2013.

I never get an email when pages I watch have been updated. Has the wiki been set up to not send emails? User:Cmcgill (talk) 19:30, 04 October 2013 (EDT)

I don't know if it is my browser or Baseball-Reference or what, but the BR leaderboards are often flaky for me. I sometimes have to refresh the page a couple times just to get them to work for me. It's mildly annoying. Alex (talk) 16:45, 13 November 2013 (EST)

I usually click on the column headers, though knowing that the scroll-down menu is more reliable, I'll start doing it that way. Thanks for the tip. Alex (talk) 16:50, 13 November 2013 (EST)

Pellacini[edit]

I found this document on the web [18], a PDF of the official program for the 1986 European Championships. Pellacini is indeed listed as France's manager (see page 11 on the team photo). There's probably a wealth of other information for you in that document; let me know if you need me to translate anything. --Philippe (talk) 02:52, 10 December 2013 (EST)

Is this a correct list of French team managers then?

 • 1955: Gerard Malancon
 • 1958?1962?: Jacques Tuffreaud
 • 1973: Hollandais Stenzler (does that mean a Dutch guy named Stenzler?)
 • 1982: An American named Edwards
 • 1986: Pellacini

You read the article correctly. The only addition is that they mention that in 1936, the team was managed by a Canadian named Godbout. And it is indeed a Dutch man named Stenzler. On Nicolas and Olivier Dubaut, I searched on various French sites, and while the two were part of the Paris Université Club for a long time, I can't find anywhere that says they are related. There's also a Bertrand Dubaut who has played for PUC. He could be related too, but I can't find any proof for him either. --Philippe (talk) 17:32, 10 December 2013 (EST)

Marathon Games[edit]

I help out Phil Lowry, who keeps a list of marathon (20 and greater innings) games. I'm going to ask him after the New Year if I can put that list on here. --Cmcgill (talk) 12:28, 17 December 2013 (EST)

Lloydminster[edit]

The city is right on the border of the two provinces, with half in Alberta and the other half in Saskatchewan. A bit like Bristol TN-VA. You would need to know on which side of the border the ballpark stood. --Philippe (talk) 12:01, 5 February 2014 (EST)

Don't worry about the calendar; I had access to some news sites and kept notes of things to add when I returned. Thanks for the good job you did on the Carribean Series by the way; I just pinch-hit for you for the decisive inning of the final game ! I'm now back home with no further travel planned for a while... --Philippe (talk) 10:39, 10 February 2014 (EST)

You're welcome[edit]

I appreciate the note you left on my talk page. Many more minor leaguers pass away than I write articles for, but they usually had short, relatively insignificant careers and I try to focus on those whose careers had some meat to them. Take care. Alex (talk) 19:13, 3 March 2014 (EST)

Encyclopedia of Minor League Baseball, 4th edition[edit]

I heard from Lloyd Johnson a while back that in the next edition, due out after this season, the "weekend" leagues will be removed. Most of those were out in California. I guess consideration will have to be given as to what to do with them on the Bullpen. --Cmcgill (talk) 19:19, 3 June 2014 (EDT)

Rodolfo Veitia[edit]

The Expos media guides did list some DSL players, but not all. After checking, Veitia was not among those listed in either the 1997 or 1998 guide though. --Philippe (talk) 11:41, 22 May 2015 (EDT)

2015 European Cup[edit]

Thanks for your ongoing coverage; I would have completely missed it, given no media are speaking about the event here. I'll go check out the games at Stade Pershing Saturday and hopefully bring back some usable pictures. I'm curious to see how much they have improved the place since my last visit; it was pretty rudimentary in 2012, but the setting is quite nice and the place had a lot of potential with minimal investment. They must have done something, since they are charging admission now! --Philippe (talk) 11:22, 5 June 2015 (EDT)

Belgian Players[edit]

Is Albert De Lannoy related to Steven De Lannoy? Is Oswald Boermans related to Michel Boermans? And is either (or are both) related to Sam Boermans? Are Marcel De Saedeleer and/or Steven De Saedeleer related to Roger De Saedeleer? Is Marc Janssen related to Steve Janssen? Is John Peerens related to Johnny Peerens? Are Patrick Renard and Guy Renard related? Are Anthony and Ronald Tiliakos related? Are Gustaf Mertens and Nicky Mertens related? Are Tonny Verhaert and Robby Verhaert related?

The generic translation would be "Y a-t-il un lien de parenté entre Albert De Lannoy et Steven De Lannoy? [rinse and repeat] Et l'un d'entre eux (ou les deux) a-t-il un lien de parenté avec Sam Boermans?" and/or is et/ou. That said, I would be surprised if they do not speak English; playing baseball in Europe tends to come with a curiosity about things American. I can't help you with Dutch, though. You could also look for a blog or similar site about Belgian baseball to ask those questions. --Philippe (talk) 12:28, 9 July 2015 (EDT)

PCL seasons[edit]

Hi Mischa, I could definitely work on those "most wanted" seasons. I see most of them are from WWII and before. I haven't been as active lately on the Bullpen, so this will get me into it some more. Still waiting for the EoMiLB 4th edition to be published. Last I heard from Lloyd Johnson, he was expecting it to be published soon. They were going to include the 2015 data. --Cmcgill (talk) 16:18, 5 January 2016 (EST

Not sure if you'd be interested in doing a piece on this guy, who died recently. Alcibiades Colon, who doesn't have any wikilinks here but whose deaths earned a ton of coverage in the Dominican Republic. I'm pretty sure he was a member of their national team. Alex (talk) 05:20, 2 March 2016 (EST)

Équipe de France: he seems to refer to the 1962 team. Btw, the character string "<;" is "ç". --Philippe (talk) 09:54, 25 March 2016 (EDT)

Indeed, that's the lineup for the 1973 team (note that the person who wrote the article was a member of that team). --Philippe (talk) 10:58, 25 March 2016 (EDT)

Olivier Dubaut[edit]

It seems to be the same guy. The dates match, and listing baseball among his hobbies is telling. However, his position is not a political one; a sous-préfet is a civil service position, equivalent to a local director of Homeland Security in the U.S. (although the two systems are very different obviously). Chargé de mission is also a civil service position, equivalent to senior advisor. --Philippe (talk) 01:46, 30 March 2016 (EDT)

1954 E-W game[edit]

More online newspapers were available. I doubt if I'll find rosters for every game, but I'm going to try to push them as close to the end (1962) as I can. -- Couillaud (talk) 21:23, 7 June 2018 (UTC) PS - My Watchlist is completely empty, even after I've made an update. Is there a reason?

I haven't used the watchlists so can't help you with that one. - --Mischa (talk) 23:33, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Is there anyone who can? It's quite frustrating, and has been going on for the better part of a year.
Also, I can't seem to log in using Windows 10 (I'm working from my older unit, with WIN7). It knows my username and password, lets me log in, bur never accepts the login, never gives a reason, either. Is there anyone else noticing this, or should I contact Baseball-Ref?
1955 may be the last year I can add East-West games with any detail. There's one player in the '55 who can only be identified by the surname "Johnson", but no more; I expect I'll find fewer and fewer recognizable names (as in first names attached).
-- Couillaud (talk) 03:18, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the extra on Sherman Cottingham. I wasn't sure how to format for multiple colleges (and I rarely remember to do that at all), and I was doing well to get the known data in without listing all the missing data :-)

Here is an odd coincidence. I had lunch last week with SABR's Negro Leagues Committee Chairman (we live in the same city, and get together now and again), and while discussing my work on the '42 season, I mentioned to him that I had (as a sideline) also started entering information here about the East-West games post-'53 (he didn't include them for two reasons: first, because statistics are progressively less complete, and second, because the average level of play progressively declined); Larry is working on a revision to his original book, and intends to add those last 10 years just to make sure we're complete, so my research is going to help him a bit. We learned what we could online about Sherman Cottingham (winner of the last E-W Game), and are now trying to determine whether he is still alive, and if so, whether we can reach him. My genealogical skills come in handy for something like this, and Larry has the connections to make the proper inquiries.

If you suddenly notice a major addition on his bio page, then you'll know we were successful in finding Mr. Cottingham. -- Couillaud (talk) 20:15, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Alright[edit]

I'm not even sure where to post this here but I got emails of concern, including from here, so figured I would let everyone know - I was not at the synagogue where the shooting was today in Pittsburgh. Me and my family were several blocks away, in another synagogue that went on lockdown as soon as we found out what all the police sirens were for. It's sad that people continue to target Jews as they have for thousands of years. We get to be targets of extremists from all religions and political factions, though in America it's usually been the far right white supremacists who have targeted us. It would be wonderful if people realized that all humans are deserving of life, being creations of G-d. I couldn't let people know sooner that I was okay as it was the Sabbath. I had gone online after the Sabbath to let my family know I'm okay and hadn't even realized people here would be concerned for me. It's very touching to belong to the caring community here. - --Mischa (talk) 00:01, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Hopke[edit]

Sorry, forgot to respond to your question. This is what someone posted about Hopke on another site: "He was called up to the 1960 Cincinnati Reds (who had acquired him after the Philadelphia Phillies finally left him off their 40-man roster) in September, but rode the bench and never appeared in a game." Alexsautographs (talk) 12:55, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Not sure which. Jeff (talk) 17:19, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Jewish players[edit]

As Jeff mentioned, it could open a can of worms, and since you're of the faith and aren't inclined to having a list or category for the many reasons you listed, consider it a dead issue. I couldn't find rosters. I found the box scores for 7 of the days, including some for Mexico and Brazil. I saved them as pdfs if you want them. I put together what I would have thought was a complete schedule of the games based on the schedules and results listed in the papers, except it seems there are some games missing. Also, I found 5 USA wins, and 2 losses. Jeff (talk) 03:32, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

I can absolutely email what I've got. I don't have an email saved for you. And its been years since I've known where that bullpen group chat/board thingy we used to have was. Jeff (talk) 18:22, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Sent you an email on Monday. Hopefully there was useful info in there. Jeff (talk) 23:39, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Charlie Culver[edit]

All Christian told us was that he had an article ready for publication in the next BRJ, coming out this summer. I see that a translation of Alexandre Pratt's article, which I linked to, was included in the weekly list of articles in the SABR bulletin a few weeks ago, so the information is out there. Philippe (talk) 19:34, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Here's a death you might be interested in: [38]. If my translator is working correctly, he played in at least one Baseball World Cup for the D.R. Alexsautographs (talk) 02:15, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Some more from the international scene: [39] (I think he's "H. Reina" on the 1961 Amateur World Series (Rosters) page), [40], and [41]. This guy, I'm pretty sure, is "M. Masis" on the aforementioned page: [42]. Not sure if this guy actually played in any international tournaments: [43] Alexsautographs (talk) 21:19, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Canadian Prime Ministers[edit]

I haven't read the BRJ article yet, but there are some pretty obscure Canadian PMs in the 19th century (Mackenzie Bowell anyone?). But for Wilfrid Laurier on down, there's probably enough to have at least a short article (although Arthur Meighen would be a challenge). Philippe (talk) 19:05, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Weird Things Happening on the Bullpen[edit]

Certain links I click take me to the home page rather than the link. For instance Chinese Professional Baseball League and Lamigo Monkeys are two that do this.?? SwatCat71 (talk) 30th August 2020

Cuban National Series[edit]

No problem. That's the Caribbean Series teams all done now. ---User:SwatCat71 (talk) 15:55, 15 October 2020

Olympic Qualifier[edit]

Do the players who took part in the recent Americas Olympic Qualifiers get the national team tag ? Asking for Luke Williams. Philippe (talk) 15:01, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

About 1980 Amateur World Series Korean team[edit]

I left my comment on my talk page. --Rkdclgh (talk) 01:35, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Minor League templates[edit]

This was the year to do it right? lol Lots of changes to the minors. So at least we know their right for now. The DSL is literally the only league that came back intact from 2019. Jeff (talk) 00:26, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

About 1989 Asian Championship Roster[edit]

Hi Mischa, I found information about South Korean player from old newspapers, and completed the list. Please review it(especially hyperlink) and leave a comment on my discussion page if you find any problems. Thanks! --Rkdclgh (talk) 14:39, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame[edit]

I'm working on creating the missing pages. If you want to add it to today's news, please go ahead, as it's worth putting up there. We have pictures of a number of the new inductees, too. Philippe (talk) 15:43, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

My pleasure. Thank you for being such an excellent contributor to this website. Alexsautographs (talk) 23:36, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

Here is a national team guy who died recently: Jerome Yenson. Alexsautographs (talk) 17:05, 7 November 2021 (UTC)

No problem, my pleasure. There's likely some more that I missed, so I'll be adding a few more obits shortly. Alexsautographs (talk) 17:16, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Negro League Player updates[edit]

I received a list of updates from Adam Darowski at Baseball-Reference, which includes all the changes made to the Seamheads database since December 2020, which covers the period since major league Negro Leaguers' stats were first put on line by B-Ref. I'm working my way through the list backwards (it's 18 pages when printed). I'll ask Adam to keep aprised of any future updates. I've also found a few places where the updates to Seamheads are not yet reflected in B-Ref, and am noting those to forward to Adam when I'm done. It's a bit of a time-consuming process, but it's great to fill in a lot of blanks. Philippe (talk) 16:17, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

Owner pages[edit]

I'm actually doing a close reading of the day's calendar page every day, and trying to fix any red links. A lot of those are owners, but also minor leaguers who either did something exceptional or were included in a major trade. I'm not touching those which are within your purview, such as obscure performers at international tournaments. I usually find a couple of egregious mistakes every day (items listed under the wrong day or wrong year), but I can't check every single item, only those that strike me as suspicious for some reason. I also try to do the same thing for the front page's "Today in Baseball" segment. Philippe (talk) 18:20, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Featured article[edit]

If you're looking for MLB player articles, both those on Derek Jeter and Scott Sanderson are good ones. Philippe (talk) 13:59, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

CL/PL MVPs[edit]

I'm not real hopeful that I can find any voting results for past years in the newspapers. Its possible that Hawaii papers might have something in the 50s or 60s, but probably not. I started working back and there were lots of mentions of Rhodes' MVP in 2001, but no voting results. And I came up totally empty on Matsunaka in 2000. Maybe I can find something at paperofrecord through SABR. Jeff (talk) 16:52, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Here's a national team player whose death you might be interested in: Emir Darce. [46] Alex (talk) 19:45, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

WBC Rosters[edit]

I just saw an article from the Canadian Press on the roster last night, and saved it until I could input the info this morning. I'll now add the remaining names from the link you sent me. Philippe (talk) 13:20, 10 February 2023 (UTC)

OK, I've now put in the missing names. I'll work on turning the list into a table like the one you prepared for Cuba and South Korea later on, and will also try to create pages for the red links. Now you just need to find volunteers for the other teams! Philippe (talk) 13:33, 10 February 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the encouragement[edit]

Encouragement is always welcome, thank you. Now that I finally have an account after all these years, I can put research here so it doesn't get lost to time again. BryanWalko (talk) 19:52, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

The page was apparently redundant with Hector de la Cruz? BaseballCoaches removed all of the links to the deleted one. Jeff (talk) 01:36, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

About Birth Place[edit]

 • Thanks,I'll try my best to complete them.By the way,Taichung County is not existed anymore, are we need to rename it into "Taichung City"?
 • Besides,I am confused about the system in BR,as Sanmin Township and Dali, Taichung is exactly the same status in Taiwan.
 • Hi, thanks for the correction. As you know, I am not a native English speaker, so there may be some little stupid grammer mistakes, I am very sorry about that. By the way, I'm curious about the listing. For Example,Jen-Lei Liao had played in minor league rookie level, Nippon Professional Baseball and now is a CPBL pitcher. When it comes to him, which should we choose? "minor league pitcher" , "NPB pitcher", or "CPBL pitcher"? Rugosa1134 (talk) 14:11, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
 • I completed all 3 games I watched in WBC, hope you can help me improved it to make it look like an English article, thanks--Rugosa1134 (talk) 17:27, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
 • Thanks for the encouragement, I will continue to complete CPBL Gold Glove, NPB Gold Glove and NPB Best Nine. By the way, I had write the bio of Tsung-Che Cheng, but it's very difficult to find information about minor league in Taiwan, can you help finishing it? (Some media reported that he played in Puerto Rico and Colombia last year)--Rugosa1134 (talk) 15:15, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
 • Various Chinese report said that Wen-Bin Chen didn't attend the 1994 Baseball World Cup, can you checked your stats? In fact that's also weird for a national team to brought 4 catchers.
 • By the way, are you interested in finishing the World Baseball Cup Rosters? I had the roster for 3 Asia countries, but lack of others -- Rugosa1134 (talk) 15:36, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
 • Thanks, I will keep finding what's wrong with the differences. I just found another report said that Chen had joined the game. It's 3 vs 1 now --Rugosa1134 (talk) 16:44, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
 • I had roster for Taiwan, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Korea in Chinese characters, missed Guam and Mongolia. I'll made it now. The new format of this site was annoying -Rugosa1134 (talk) 16:25, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

I missed last night's game against the U.S. (it was too late and I didn't hold much hope) but I can do a write-up anyway, as well as one for today's game. Philippe (talk) 21:59, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

Some Register Question[edit]

1. I noticed that many BR register CPBL player page's spelling was wrong, how can I fix them? For Example, Kun-Hsiang Tsai. By the way, nearly all Register page was spell as Kun Hsiang Tsai, instead of the normal Taiwan player name spelling like Kun-Hsiang Tsai, that meant all TW player couldn't link to BR Bullpen page. Can it be modified? OR we should made all redriects?

2. BR register didn't had TML players, do they interested in adding? I had part of stats from Taiwan baseball wiki.

3. Every xxxx in Japanese Baseball page before 2006 had stub category, but I thought they were more completed then others(They had student baseball and International Baseball), what's the difference?

Thanks for help, I will completed all NPB award winners in this month. --Rugosa1134 (talk) 17:12, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Japan High Schools[edit]

Thanks for the encouragement. There's still many high schools name needed to correct, and so many "Chugakkou" needed to deleted. I'll do my best. Do you think we need to add Koshien titles in the high school's page? By the way, is the site issue being fixed? My page still looked weird, and the category still unable to identified easily -Rugosa1134 (talk) 21:06, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

It’s there any reason that we always used the 2011 data in Japanese baseball page?- Rugosa1134 (talk) 16:02, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

OK, only those who were on Top 20 can get the note about ranking, right? I’ll fix them all in recent days. By the way, only those who had more than 2,000 innings can be qualified to rank in career winning percentage - Rugosa1134 (talk) 16:08, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the warm welcome![edit]

It's nice to have that encouragement shortly after I joined :) I'm a pretty new baseball fan so i'm still figuring some of the more complex things out. Right now, my goal is to fill in some blanks that seem easy to do, such as the Colombian league that I graced with a 2023 season page today. As a Dutchman, it is also quite likely I will work on Hoofdklasse articles later down the line. See ya around! --Minuy600 (talk)

Not sure if you've heard of this, but you might find it interesting: [47]. Alex (talk) 00:05, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Never mind, it wouldn't impact my writing. And there's no Taoyuan County anymore, it was merged. By the way, I had recently write some update, can you take a look? I thought there's some little mistake that I was unable to found, especially one of them had foreign experience. Well, there may be no Medal Games lol. I'll watch the Gold Medal Game and write it if possible - Rugosa1134 (talk) 14:24, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

OK, this year would be interesting as three teams were still only had 1.5 GB even since there’s only 7-10 games left. I would done it after the CPBL playoff series. I’ll also made some chart and pitching sequences just like Nippon Series. By the way, since there’s NPB draft pages, I thought CPBL draft pages were needed, but we don’t had many teams. Do you think just first round (4 or 5 players), first three rounds (12-18) players or all(some years maybe 20, some maybe 30-40)- Rugosa1134 (talk) 17:08, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

I changed up the Pan-American template a little. We can always refert it if you liked it better the other way. Jeff (talk) 17:27, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

Nathan Laot[edit]

The French baseball academy is located in Toulouse, so I think that's what Nathan is referring to by "Pôle France Baseball Toulouse". There is no actual school on the premises but the young players there receive guidance for their schooling. See the institute's website here [52] and here [53]. It,s possible tht Nathan is doing his schooling by correspondance, which can be done in France. Philippe (talk) 00:12, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

About Korean Players[edit]

1.If you’re writing Korean Players page, don’t use Korean Wiki, it usually didn’t had many useful informations. Namu Wiki would batter.

2. KBO draft had 2 phases, I thought point out whether a player was drafted in first phase or second phase would help - Rugosa1134 (talk) 18:50, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Is the bullpen being slow for everyone?[edit]

Today, the bullpen is being incredibly slow for some reason, and I don't believe it's my internet because every other site is working perfectly fine for me. I tried it on my computer and my phone as well as at school, at home, and at my grandmother's house and it's still doing the same thing so is this a sitewide thing? QA[edit]

Can I "Justify" a page? -Umbreon9 (talk) 02:10, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

Should we institute a "Floor" for Franchise Players? I.E. a minimum requirement of WAR. -Umbreon9 (talk) 23:30, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

What amount of WAR? 15? 20? 25? -Umbreon9 (talk) 11:42, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

The whole purpose of renovating the Franchise Players is to remove personal biases. I need a suggested formula to work with. I haven't studied much team history so this would be a major help. -Umbreon9 (talk) 20:36, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

I need to know how to change the color of text for a specific spot (X, Y Co-ordinate) in a chart, not a whole row but a single co-ordinate. -Umbreon9 (talk) 23:40, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

P.S. it's for my Roger Clemens chart.
