Biographical Information[edit]

Third baseman Tsugio Iwata played in Nippon Professional Baseball from 1936 to 1937 and from 1941 to 1942. He played for Nagoya (1936, 1937), the Nagoya Golden Dolphins (1936), the Tokyo Senators (1937) and Asahi (1941, 1942).

Despite hitting only .204 for his career, he managed a .301 on-base percentage on the strength of 105 walks in 901 plate appearances. In 1941, he walked 36 times and had just 16 strikeouts in 230 PAs. He also stole 10 bases in 60 games that year, but ranked only fifth-most on the fleet-footed team. His two home runs accounted for one-fifth of the team's total, however, tying Michinori Tsubouchi for the club lead.

Overall, Iwata slashed .204/.301/.246 with five home runs, 59 RBI, 23 stolen bases and 70 strikeouts in 241 games over four seasons.
