Biographical Information

Gun-woo Kim played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 6 years.

Kim represented South Korea in the 1981 World Junior Championship and 1985 Asian Championship. The MBC Blue Dragons selected him in the first round of the 1986 KBO draft, and he became their ace as a rookie. He went 18-6 with a 1.80 ERA, and he broke the KBO record for most wins in a season as a rookie. He was 5th in ERA (between Yong-soo Kim and Ho-yeon Jang), 6th in strikeouts (between Sang-kun Lee and Il-eon Choi) and 4th in wins (6 behind Dong-yeol Sun). He won the KBO Rookie of the Year. Kim was still a solid starter in 1987, and he went 12-7 with a 2.64 ERA.

However, Kim was involved in a car accident on September 12, and he missed the entire 1988 season. He never recovered from that injury, and he only pitched 10 games with a 3.76 ERA in 1989. His ERA was 6.21 in 12 games in 1990, and he only pitched 2 games with the big club in 1991. He was turned into a batter in 1992, and he hit .276/.327/.449 in 54 games. Kim recorded a .253/.307/.354 batting line in 86 games in 1993, then he announced his retirement. He became the pitching coach of the LG Twins minor league team from 1995 to 1996, then he returned to the mound in 1997. Kim pitched 7 games with a 4.63 ERA, and he recorded a shutout inning in the 1997 Korean Series Game 1. The Twins lost to the Haitai Tigers in 5 games, and his professional career ended. He was the bullpen coach of the Twins in 1999.

Overall, Kim was 36-19 with a 2.72 ERA, struck out 197 and pitched 485 2/3 innings in 6 seasons in the KBO.
