Synchonization Errors[edit]

In working on the year pages, I have discovered a number of anomolies resulting from different franchises with the same name or nickname. The database of Baseball-Reference points users to appropriate Bullpen pages, in this case, erroneously. These errors I've discovered involve the names Reds, Athletics, Grays, and Giants (so far).

For instance the pages Boston Reds 1890 and Cincinnati Reds 1890 both point to the same page 1890 Reds

I've created the missing pages, they need to be connected to properly from the appropriate pages. Here are the corrections that should be made.

Boston Reds 1890 should point to 1890_Reds_(PL)

Boston Reds 1891 should point to 1891_Reds_(AA)

Players League New York Giants 1890 should point to 1890 Giants (PL)

Players League Philadelphia Athletics of 1890 should point to 1890 Athletics (PL)

Milwaukee Grays 1878 should point to 1878 Grays (Milwaukee)

Brooklyn Grays 1885 should point to 1885 Grays (Brooklyn)

Spam Blacklist[edit]

Would the creation of a spam blacklist be possible? I tried editing the localsettings.php, using the in-built Media-Wiki feature, but it didn't work. --MichaelEng 20:13, 22 Mar 2006 (EST)

Update to Media-Wiki Software and Extensions Requests[edit]

Could the Media-Wiki software be updated to the latest build (1.6.7) and could the following extensions be added; spam blacklist, Cite.php, ParserFunctions, and EasyTimeline? --MichaelEng 16:14, 12 Jun 2006 (EDT)

Upgrading[edit]

Michael,

I'll look at doing an upgrade. Do you have any experience with doing upgrades. My main concern is not to break anything.

Unfortunately no, sorry. Also, is there any chance that the MTurks could copy over information from Dates in Baseball to the appropriate dates. --MichaelEng 11:05, 13 Jun 2006 (EDT)

Missing heights[edit]

It would appear that anywhere there is a ½" in the height that the entire height is missing from the Bullpen biography (and perhaps bbref as well). I have fixed this in the Bullpen wherever I have run across it (e.g., Phil Voyles, but that is only a few cases. --Ron 01:19, 14 Jun 2006 (EDT)

I believe that that was a design descision. See here (BDB Design Group) for some discussion on it. --MichaelEng 06:47, 14 Jun 2006 (EDT)

Database Download and Special Page Import[edit]

I don't know if I am missing something but is there a place to download the entire database; I was going to try and use the LinkBot. Also, is the Import ([1]) function enabled, I was going to export some pages (dates, player pages, team pages, etc.) from Wikipedia and Import them here. --MichaelEng 16:10, 15 Jun 2006 (EDT)

Working Extensions[edit]

Easytimeline and Cite.php seem to be working as does ParserFunctions; see Sandbox. --MichaelEng 08:25, 19 June 2006 (EDT)

CWS, charinsert, and Job Queue[edit]

My main sources for the College World Series data were the 2006 Baseball Records Book and 2006 College World Series Records Book (both available here) from which I hand-copied the game info, pre-tournament standings and coaches. I also used the NCAA Championship Archives to get the dates of games. The [www.cwsomaha.com CWS Omaha Site] was used for award winners. Boyd Nation's site was also used for standings and conferences. I used the backtoomaha site for the scores, with spot checks versus the books; I also used the same text (SCHOOL eliminated or SCHOOL wins CWS because I couldn't think of another way to describe it) as the mentioned site.

Also could the charinsert extension be added so Edittools could be added. Lastly do you how to use the Job Queue. Null edits are needed on all the pages using the calender template? --MichaelEng 00:17, 31 July 2006 (EDT)

Most wanted update[edit]

The update of the "most wanted" list turned out weird. A lot of the names on the new list don't belong. For instance, look at Happy Felsch, who has a long biography, whereas he is listed as having virtually nothing. This is the case for at least a couple dozen of the names on the new list that came from the old list. - Randy 16:31 25 August 2006 (EDT)

Extensions Update[edit]

Could some extensions be fixed or added?

  • ParserFunctions #if function fix: in the ParserFunctions.php, replace line 57
 function ifHook( &$parser, $test = '', $then = '', $else = '' ) {
  if ($test !== '') {

on line 57 with:

 function ifHook( &$parser, $test = '', $then = '', $else = '' ) {
   if ($test) {
  • Enabling Image Scaling: an installation ImageMagick
  • Enable SVG Uploading: change upload whitelist

Image Tags (February 2007)[edit]

Greetings Admin.

Thank you for uploading following images to the BR Bullpen. However, these images are missing source and/or copyright information as required by the image use policy. For ease of identification, image tags are often used to indicate sourcing, license status, or both. If the required information for images is not added within 7 days it will be deleted.

This is a semi-automated message from MichaelEng (talk) at 14:09, 18 February 2007 (EST).

Remember me?...[edit]

Hi there Sean! I'm Soxrock, and I am willing to help you out here as well as at Wikipedia. It's a way to contribute more and repay you for even allowing your stats to be used over there. I hope to improve numerous articles and hope to bring a few Wikipedia elements over here, make this place better. Thank you for creating this and I'll make sure to help you out very soon! Stats[edit]

Whatever. It was just merely preferential. I likely won't be ripping them from articles, but I won't fill them up. When I return to those articles, I'll "replace" them with roster templates. Soxrock 09:11, 25 October 2007 (EDT) (yeah, not using the fancy sig here)

Links to updated site[edit]

I went through all the season pages for the Kinston Indians and Myrtle Beach Pelicans and none of those redirected to the new pages so I changed all of those.

Charlie Scott's old link: [2] leads here: [3] instead of where it should go: [4]. Interestingly, Charlie also does not appear where he should on the list of Scotts: [5]. There is a Charles Scott, but that's a different guy. I'm not sure if that glitch is related to the other glitch or not. This is just one guy, but I've come across a few others so far. Most links are redirecting to the new pages as they should. Kinston eagle 21:18, 3 April 2009 (EDT)

Another one. Pete Kuld's old link: [6] does not redirect to his new page: [7]. Kinston eagle 10:33, 4 April 2009 (EDT)

Another odd occurence. When I punched Harwell into the BR search box to look for David Harwell, it took me straight to the Ernie Harwell Bullpen page without giving me a list of names to choose from. You have a David Harwell minors page here: [8]. Kinston eagle 12:08, 4 April 2009 (EDT)

I see that the Harwell glitch was fixed - thanks. I noticed another. I tried to look up the minor league stats of Scott Boras. When I punched "Boras" into the search box, it took me to his bullpen page instead of his stat page or a list of Boras players (I think his son was drafted, but I'm not sure if he has played yet). 69.68.238.142 16:30, 28 April 2009 (EDT)

I've been having issues uploading files. I have to upload a second time to make it work. I get this error:

  • Could not read or write file "mwstore://local-backend/local-public/3/35/xx.jpg" due to insufficient permissions or missing directories/containers.
  • Could not store file "/tmp/phpVClsM5" at "mwstore://local-backend/local-public/3/35/xx.jpg".

--Jeff (talk) 21:52, 19 April 2013 (EDT)

This is still an issue when uploading a new version of an existing file. --Jeff (talk) 11:48, 10 May 2013 (EDT)

I can use it search for files on flickr, but when you go to upload it, I get this error.

A new spam problem[edit]

The new method of spam attack against our website are for spammers to create a new user account, solely to leave a spam link on the newly-created user page. A couple of us are deleting those as soon as they're created, but they're a bother, and legitimate edits get lost in the sea of spam. Could you look at potential technical solutions, e.g.: 1) user pages cannot contain any external links; or 2) new users cannot create any external links for a fixed period; or 3) (more radical) new users must be approved by an administrator before creating any new content. --Philippe (talk) 06:04, 28 May 2013 (EDT)

Philippe, I added a requirement that you have to confirm an e-mail to edit a page. We'll see if that fixes some things on the spam front. Admin (talk) 10:10, 31 May 2013 (EDT)

If it doesn't work, at least we can spam them right back ! --Philippe (talk) 10:24, 31 May 2013 (EDT)

You do realize that 99.9% of new users these days are spammers, don't you ? --Philippe (talk) 10:21, 11 June 2013 (EDT)

Sean: whatever you did yesterday seems to have worked. It's a relief not to have to continually delete spam accounts ! --Philippe (talk) 05:58, 12 June 2013 (EDT)

Email watched page changes[edit]

Hi Sean, would it be possible to enable email notification of watched pages? This is a user preference option. In LocalSettings.php, there should be a $wgEnotifWatchlist variable. If that is set to true, it will allow users to get an email when a watched page is changed. Thanks for considering it. Cmcgill (talk) 12:43, 9 October 2013 (EDT)

Hi Sean, that worked just as it should. Thanks. --Cmcgill (talk) 09:43, 27 October 2013 (EDT)

Templates that no longer work[edit]

Sean, since the latest update to the site, I've noticed that a couple of templates no longer work: the succession box template (see for example on Cito Gaston's page) and the Book source template (the one that if you you put in an ISBN number, it took you to a page where you could look up the book on various sites such as Amazon, etc.) Can you look into this. Thanks. --Philippe (talk) 15:48, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Sean, the succession boxes still don't show up. The names appear but not the actual boxes. The template in question is {{SBox 1-1}}. The other issue, with ISBN numbers, is that when you inserted one under that format (e.g. ISBN 978-0786400683), the letters ISBN would automatically appear as a blue link, which took you to a page called "book references" from which you could automatically look up the book in question on various sites. For some reason, the references now simply appear as normal text which does not link to anything. My skin was always on "Vector", so I never had any of the problems other users pointed out, but I wonder if I'm the only one who cannot get those two templates to work anymore and if there is a fix. Philippe (talk) 20:29, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Is the software update for today done? - --Mischa (talk) 17:09, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Technical glitch in the Search function[edit]

Sean, in the last few days, whenever I've entered a term for which there is not yet an article in the "Search BR Bullpen" box on top of the page, I get the following error message:

Database error A database query error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software.[cae7a2af7a28d757a34577a7] 2017-06-16 12:45:08: Fatal exception of type "DBQueryError"

There are workarounds to create new pages in spite of this, but could you try to fix the issue. Thanks. --Philippe (talk) 12:47, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Image glitch[edit]

Sean, the images are not displaying correctly since Thursday. See on top of this page for a perfect example. Could you look into it. Thanks. --Philippe (talk) 18:22, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

Now there seems to be an issue uploading images. I tried to upload an image for Bobby Richardson and received the following message:

Could not open lock file for "mwstore://local-backend/local-public/e/ee/BobbyRichardson.jpg".

Might this be a related issue? --Jeff (talk) 08:08, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

[edit]

Uploading a new file works. However, tried uploading a new version of a file and got:

Could not read or write file "mwstore://local-backend/local-public/a/ab/Timb1.jpg" due to insufficient permissions or missing directories/containers.
Could not store file "/tmp/phpOUxiDe" at "mwstore://local-backend/local-public/a/ab/Timb1.jpg".

--Jeff (talk) 09:23, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

This is still an issue. --Jeff (talk) 01:50, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

After every edit, I get a "404 - Not Found" page. The edit is being saved though. --Jeff (talk) 17:57, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Same here. I can't get to a page through the search box either; I have to use various runarounds. --Philippe (talk) 18:57, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Server Move[edit]

Everything seems to be working fine so far. I haven't yet noticed any glitches. --Philippe (talk) 13:50, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

Since the update, if I open a lot of windows at once (ex. opening all the changes since I last logged in or opening all the players for Thailand in the 2007 Asian Championship to add information to them, then I get a bunch of "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable nginx/1.13.10" messages. - --Mischa (talk) 16:13, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

I have not had any issues from my computer, but when trying to access the bullpen from work, I have seen a couple of the 503 messages. I assumed it had something to do with slower servers or something. --Jeff (talk) 17:07, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

I've noticed image files that end in .JPG (as opposed to .jpg) do not show up anymore. Not sure if this is a result of the server move or not. Alexsautographs (talk) 13:36, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

I'm not sure the fix worked. Granted, it could just be this user's uploads, but he has a bunch of .JPG files and they still don't show up. Take a look: [9] Alexsautographs (talk) 14:37, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

Looks good! Alexsautographs (talk) 15:08, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

What does the bot tag do? I have no idea how to use bots. It would be helpful for something like moving everyone from Category:Serie A1 Players to Category:Italian Baseball League Players as the league changed names a while ago but it's too much to do at once. - --Mischa (talk) 16:05, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

All my edits now show up as bot edits, which are invisible unless someone has "show bots" marked. - --Mischa (talk) 16:40, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

Can't log in under WIN 10, can't access WatchList anymore[edit]

I upgraded my PC a year or so ago, but mostly used my WIN 7 laptop to work on Bullpen contributions. I'm transitioning everything to the newer model, but I find that I cannot log into Bullpen. It remembers my username and password, but never accepts them, and does not give me any error code or reason for not completing log-in. Is it WIN 10, or do I have something eles causing it? I have a couple of ad blockers, but nothing else, and I believe this problem predates the blockers. I never had the problem with any earlier versions of Windows, and I don't have another WIN 10 PC to check it the problem is specific to the PC.

Also, no matter from which PC I log in or which system I'm using, I cannot see my WatchList. I can see my contributions, but the Watchlist just isn't there.

Suggestions? Couillaud (talk) 19:59, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Issue with links[edit]

Hi Sean, whenever I get an email about a change to pages I'm watching, the link is always https://bpv.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/<and so on>. These result in "This site can't be reached". The links on the Upload Wizard are the same way. Any chance this could be rectified? --Cmcgill (talk) 00:22, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
