Biographical Information[edit]

Brendan McGuigan has pitched in the minors and for Team Canada.

McGuigan was born in Hong Kong to Canadian parents, who then moved to Texas due to company restructuring. [1] He was 2-4 with 1 save and a 2.66 ERA as a college freshman at the University of Richmond, then allowed 5 unearned runs in 2 innings before injury ended his sophomore year; he had Tommy John surgery and was redshirted. [2] He returned in 2017 but struggled (0-2, 9.77, 17 BB in 15 2/3 IP). He rebounded to 1-0, 3.38 as a junior. As a senior, he was 3-4 with a 3.99 ERA, fanning 84 in 70 innings. He was 6th in the Atlantic-10 Conference in Ks.

He was signed by Seattle Mariners scout Robert Keller as an undrafted free agent. [3] He went 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 5 games for the 2019 West Virginia Power. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned in 2021 with the Everett AquaSox and allowed no hits in his first 10 innings (3 BB, 1 R, 17 K; 1-1, 1 Sv).

That was enough to draw the interest of Team Canada, given his citizenship. He joined them for the 2021 Americas Olympic Qualifier. In their opener, he relieved Andrew Albers with a no-hitter in progress in the 8th inning against Colombia. He continued his 2021 hitless ways as well as Albers' no-no. He struck out Jerry Downs, got Andrés Angulo on a grounder and fanned Carlos Martinez. Ben Onyshko relieved in the 9th and closed out the no-no. [4]
