1954 Rule V Draft

The major league 1954 Rule V Draft was held November 22 in New York, NY, while the minor league phase was held November 30-December 1 in Houston, TX. 57 players total were drafted by the major and minor league clubs. 13 players were drafted by major league teams at a cost of $122,000, while minor league teams selected 44 players at a cost of $132,950.
The first pick in the major league portion was Roberto Clemente. Under the bonus rule, the Pirates paid only the $4,000 bonus figure instead of the AAA draft rate of $10,000.
In the minor league drafts, 6 players were taken in the Open classification draft, 5 players in the AAA draft, 7 players in the AA draft, 13 players in the A draft, 10players in the B draft, and 3 players in the C draft. Ed Mickelson was the first pick of the minor league draft.
