The Canadian-American Association (also known as the Can-Am League) was an independent league which began play in 2005 and had previously been known as the Northeast League. The number of teams in the league fluctuated quite a lot during its lifespan, with the Capitales de Québec and the New Jersey Jackals having been the strongest franchises. In 2012, the league reached an agreement with the American Association for interleague play between the two independent circuits, although that lasted only a couple of seasons. The two leagues still play their All-Star Game together, however.

After the 2019 season, the Ottawa Champions had their lease cancelled due to $400,000 in unpaid rent, leaving the Can-Am League at 5 teams. The Frontier League was at 9 teams due to similar situations, so the two leagues merged for the 2020 season. The new league will carry on under the Frontier League name.
