All-American Association

The All-American Association (AAA) was an southern-based independent league that lasted just one season, 2001 and was troubled by poor attendance. The league was made up of six teams, and several former major leaguers (Jose Guzman, Rick Greene, Jeff Sparks, and Jeff Ware) were among the players.

The Baton Rouge Blue Marlins posted the best regular season record and in the playoffs captured the league's only championship. Jason Williams of Baton Rouge was the league's MVP and hit .376 to win the batting crown, while Pedro Quero of the Fort Worth Cats and Brian Baker of the Tennessee T's tied for the league lead with 13 homers each. Rick Powalski of the Albany Alligators was 8-4 with a 1.81 ERA and 132 strikeouts to be named Pitcher of the Year. Leaders on the mound included Jose Guzman of Fort Worth with a 1.65 ERA, Jeremy Robinson of Baton Rouge with 11 wins, and Rick Greene of Baton Rouge with 21 saves.

After the season the two Texas-based teams departed to join the Central Baseball League the next season and the league folded. The Montgomery Wings ownership group, which had purchased the team following the season, founded the Southeastern League and convinced the Baton Rouge Blue Marlins to join them.
