There was at least one league in the 19th century called the Northeast League, but the name went almost entirely unused in the 20th century.

The Northeast League was reinvented in 1995 as an independent league. After four years of operation, it merged with the Northern League. During this four-year period, 1999-2002, the former Northeast League teams played in the Northern League East. The merger ended and the Northeast League returned to its former name for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. In 2005 it was reorganized as the Canadian-American Association.
